Movie Night
So Friday night movie night was a tradition for me when I was in college. I had 30+ hours of class a week, plus a minimum of double that in homework, so Friday night was my scheduled time to relax. My brother played baseball, so my sister in law and I would take in a movie. Of course, then I moved to Vancouver and the tradition died. But last night we went out and saw a movie. Iron Man 2. I know, I know, welcome to may. Meh. It was pretty good, but now that Inception is out I am debating whether or not to see it next Friday or save it for another day when the pickings are slim. Either way, there's not a lot coming out that interests me, but at least it's more than there seems to be happening in Hockey lately. I have just a few links for you today. Hopefully, Kovalchuk signs in LA today and we can finally get things rolling.

I’m checking that ad above this and I don’t see any “authentic” hockey jerseys for really cheap. Otherwise, you know, I’d be on it like stink on poop.

mmm...
if we could have gagne for cheap i’d be all over that.
what do you guys think it’d take to trade for him?

Prospects or picks, I’d guess. Philly is looking to dump salary, so they may not be interested in taking much back in the way of NHLers.

I gotta think it doesn’t really matter what the offer is at this point, it’s almost 100% dependent on which team Gagne feels like waiving for.

I could see him wanting to play for the Leafs, and not just because I’m horribly biased. He would have a permanent spot on our first line, as well as on the PP, he wouldn’t be pressured about captaincy at all, and he’d have plenty of muscle protecting him.

Reimer and a mid pick?
What the heck does Philly even want – and a bigger question is what do they expect?

maybe one of our young defencemen? pronger (7-yr contract notwithstanding) and timonen are getting old. wouldn’t hurt to have replacements in the system.
as for what the flyers expect, you’d have to think that gagne fetches less than kaberle would (more expensive, injury-prone, easier type of player to replace)…

Philly fans want a lot for Gagne… but I think some are coming around to the realization they aren’t going to get a lot.
Kind of like some of us and Kaberle.

Development VS Production
If we have some guys who management thinks can develop into a top forward or we trade for someone like that, then we have to answer the question:
Will this player benefit from playing top minutes on the team this season?
If the answer is yes then you use this year to build this (or these) players into productive NHLers and use that as a springboard going into the 2012 season.
If the answer is no then you probably would deem it better to add a guy who is talented right now to help the other players around him develop.
It really comes down to philosophy – group of young guys who can develop together and become productive OR you need a mix of talented veterans to lead the way and show the young guys what they need to do to become a top player.
I don’t know what the answer is. I would prefer moving Kaberle to get a guy who has the potential to be a top 6 – and perhaps a year or two down the road, a top 3 – player.
Saying that, I am not horribly opposed to getting Gagne as a contingency plan. The worst case scenario with him isn’t all that scary considering the 1 year contract.
The worst thing that could happen is he has an injury plagued season but is never quite bad enough go on the IR – and when he does play, it is only at a fraction of his full capability (sadly, even then he is probably still a top 6 forward on our team.)
The other scenarios are:
1. He suffers a career ending injury and we have to put him on the IR, and he retires at the end of the season. In that case, we get cap relief and can give more ice time to younger players.
2. He plays an average season, maybe gets 70 games and 60 points. Productive year for him.
3. He revitalizes his career and plays extremely well.
For options two or three, He either a) accepts a trade to a contending team at the deadline and we receive assets b) re-signs with the Leafs to a short term (2 years?) deal at a reduced salary or c) he walks. Still, none of those things would be devastating.

GARRY VALK PLAZA???
Not sure if people have seen this, it was on The Score yesterday, someone is trying to get a new condominium in Toronto named after Garry Valk. Why Valk? I dunno, but they have some rationale on the site.
http://www.nameourcondo.com/entry/319
Apparently it is across the street from the ACC. So I say vote Valk. I think you can vote once a day.

If Valk Gets A Plaza, Then Wendel Gets...
the city formerly known as “Toronto.” (Which, face it, was never all that great a name, eh?)
It’s time. Screw parks and plazas, let’s give Wendel his due – Toronto. Hell, maybe the whole GTA. (And Saskatchewan. Errrr, Clarkatchewan.)
Can’t wait ’til October to hear, “And now… Welcome your 2010 WENDEL MAPLE LEAFS!!!!”

LOL steve Simmons
We take you now to the front office meeting of the San Jose Sharks, where the determination is made about how to win the Stanley Cup. “I’ve got the answer,” one voice says. “Let’s sign Antero Nittymaki to be our goalie.” There is applause all around. This is, of course, fictional: Or is it? One of the deepest, strongest teams in hockey lost its No. 1 goalie and replaced him with Nittymaki. And this somehow makes them better? There is but one plausible explanation for this: John Ferguson Jr. works for the Sharks. The same man who traded Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft, believed in Justin Pogge and gave up multiple picks for Vesa Toskala. Must be Fergie. Otherwise, can someone please explain what GM Doug Wilson is thinking?
I find this hilarious!
by hockeyphreak on Jul 18, 2010 2:36 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
I don’t hate the Nittymaki signing at all… I think he could be decent with a good d-core in front of him. I’m starting to think they want to give Greiss more playing time and playing tandem or backup with Nittymaki will give him tons of starts.
Now, sharks just need to pump up their d-core…

Exactly, and they looked at the goaltending that Chicago and Philly got and decided they didn’t need to over pay someone eleventy billion dollars to play goal.

Simmons yet again demonstrating his ignorance. SJ had a choice: they could resign Nabokov, or re-sign Marleau. Not both. It is much easier to replace (close to) Nabokov’s production than Marleau’s for pennies on the dollar.
Overpaying Nabokov would have been the JFJ move. He’s the one who didn’t understand the inherent fungibility of all but the most elite goaltenders.
Simmons is stupid, water is wet, etc etc.

His SVP says he’s ready. He’ll get sheltered minutes care of Nittymaki, but he’ll play at least 40 games. They got a young guy and an old guy; they’re not modelling after phili, they’re modelling after Boston. Now Nitty is no Thomas, but the principle is the same.
