Good for Burkey for finding away around the arbitration possibility and still keeping our efficient point-scoring machine!!

Ya… Free agent signing… comes with the territory to overpay a bit to lure free agents here.
At a minimum QO signing, I can’t really get mad at the Leafs. If he signs for like $1.5M ill be scratching my head.

But this is one of those things where I think Burke is being legit honest – If Kadri gains the necessary strength and weight, and beats other players out during camp, it’d be tough to send him down.
They can’t save a year of his ELC again if he goes to the A.
I hope he’s not rushed, but he probably will come to camp with something to prove.

I would like Kadri to get that 7 game tryout and then get sent right back down to the AHL…….no need to rush the kid
Toronto Maple Leafs: Looking at next year since 1967
Why?
If you think he should be starting in the AHL, then start him in the AHL. Why tell him he’s made the team and then send him packing at the end of October?
Why seven games? A year will be coming of his contract no matter if he plays in the AHL or NHL. It just seem arbitrary and out-and-out strange to say “no need to rush the kid” then start him at the higher level with a plan to demote him. It’s like you want him to be working backwards.
Like Rick Bosetti my goal in life is not to do well but to piss on things.
Really??
I mean, I am all for JFM being back, but why didn’t they just qualify him first, it just seems puzzling now.

If you read the earlier post
when he wasn’t qualified, you’d know that if they had qualified him at 110% – as would be the minimum – he would get $550k for 1 year.
HOWEVER this also gives him the ability to reject the QO and take the Leafs to arbitration – where he could have well gotten a deal over $1m (more than the Leafs wanted to spend) that would be binding, or would have let him walk.
Leafs wanted him – just not over $1m. Let him test a few days of UFA… got him back at a reasonable price.

i agree with you. i just suck at connotation. the “fuuuck” was one of despair because i have wanted this guy to be a leaf since i heard he would fall out of the top 5 in november.
at first i thought we would have to hope he drops to the bottom of the 1st round where our kaberle pick would snag him.
and then he fell through the 2nd round.
and then he fell right into our laps and we said “no thank you dr. awesome, i dont want my face rocked into space”

Depends on how high you rate Stalberg, DiDom and (ha!) Paradis.
I thought Stalberg could have legimately turned into a 2nd-3rd line speedy winger, and end up with a few 20-25 goal seasons. He still may.
Versteeg is DEFINITELY an upgrade, but we did not give up NOTHING.
Anything in an A would have been a steal (i.e. Phaneuf, Giguere)
Tick Tock, Tomas. Tick Tock.
A drinking team with a hockey problem.
I’m bracing myself for how this deal is going to come out in the wash. Stalberg had 9 goals in just under half the season. With a better team around him, playing a full season, why wouldn’t he at least double that total? We could very well have given up a consistent 20-goal scorer in Stalberg (Versteeg had 20 last year), forget the prospects. Plus, Stalberg is much cheaper for the next couple seasons. The grade on this trade could be an F one year from now. We’ll just have to see.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
I get your trepidation but Stalberg seems like his ceiling is at 15-20 goals. Versteeg could hit 30 and has hands that are not made of stone. Even then the only way this deal gets an F a year from now is if Stalberg puts up 20 and Versteeg puts up less than 20.
The Guess Who sucked, the Jets were lousy anyway
by Plea From A Cat Named Felix on Jul 3, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think so. If Stalberg puts up 20 goals next year, and say 40 points, And Versteeg winds up with 20 goals, 45 points, the trade gets an F based on salary cap efficiency alone, forget that we also gave up DiDo.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
What if Versteeg does that with Grabovski and Irwin and Stalberg plays with Kane and Toews?

He won’t play with Irwin. That’s just silly.
Bozak, Grabbo, Kadri. No way Versteeg plays any lower than the 2nd line. He’ll probably get decent Kessel time, to boot.
I’d be shocked if Stalberg plays with Kane and Toews all year and only comes up with 40 points. In that case, however, I’d upgrade the trade to a B or C.

mitchell + gus + kulemin + armstrong for $7.4Mish. can everyone chill about the armstrong signing now?
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
Nope… just because he made good decisions on his own player contract doesn’t mean he made a good decision on the UFA signing.
July 1 is not a great day for the Leafs in the past few years. Other than Hagman, can we think of any great UFA signings that have been made? (NHL UFAs, not college or European free agent signings)

how many great UFA signings has anyone made? judging by the banter around here about 95% of UFAs are “overpaid” anyway. why are we desperate to get in on that action?
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
Top-end UFAs are worth it to overpay for the most part, because they have high-end skill you can’t really acquire anywhere else except drafting extremely high.
Marian Gaborik was another good one… though that was a gamble because of his injuries. Still, the guy is damn good.

because he hasn’t scored 20+ points on the 4th line. He’s scored 20+ points with powerplay time and on the 2nd line and 3rd line wings and on 4th line. He has been given far better opportunities because of the horrid forward depth on Leafs teams he has been on. Since he doesn’t produce that much offensively, doesn’t do PK, doesn’t hit, doesn’t fight, isn’t particularly adept at faceoffs and isn’t particularly good as a checker what is his role? He’s filler on a non-playoff team.

I tend to disagree
On really competitive teams your 3rd and 4th liners bring particular skill sets: agitator, face-off specialist, checker, powerplay specialist, enforcer (although the latter is seldom that important beyond the first playoff round). Mitchell brings none of these. He is average at everything and good at nothing. Our team is not that competitive yet.

Ok.
Hawks 4th line:
Burish
Eager
Fraser
Collectively, the three of them played all of 1:20 a game on the PK, 0:05 on the PP (that’s combined). None of them dropped the gloves. Fraser was 5th in the team in total face-offs taken and won 48%.

I think you may be helping me prove my point.
Fraser played 3 games in playoffs. That’s how little value such filler has when everyone is healthy. He played lots in regular season because guys like Bolland, Burish and Hossa missed lots of games and because he can play C, the Hawks weakest forward position. He is the Hawks John Mitchell.
Burish is at least an agitator and hitter, but he was dumped for most of the finals and only played 15 of 22 playoff games. [He also missed most of the season due to injury and was far less effective than previous season.]
Eager is a fighter and big hitter. He was the only one you mentioned who really should be listed as part of the 4th line during playoffs.
By minutes played and games played the Hawks 4th line in playoffs was Kopecky, Madden and Eager. A big body front-of-the net presence who can hit, is defensively solid and can occasionally score (4 goals in 17 games); a faceoff, defensive and PK specialist with Cups under his belt, and a fighter/hitter. Mitchell brings none of the above attributes except “occasionally score”.
Last Detroit Cup 4th: Helm, Draper and Maltby. It has special attributes. Devastating speed, faceoffs, chippiness, defensive specialists, PK specialists. Again, which of these attributes would Mitchell bring?
What was Pittsburgh’s 4th: Rupp, Kennedy, Adams or something like that? Special attributes.

If the Leafs ever make a run, John Mitchell (in his current incarnation) will not be a part of it.
As the Leafs improve, they need a bottom three that make close to league minimum, don’t get exposed, and can occasionally step up to play 3rd line minutes. Mitchell fits that to a T.
If you can find a replacement player that can eat Mitchell’s minutes, put up similar box cars, won’t get exposed at ES, doesn’t cost the team anything to acquire and will sign for less than $750K I’d love to hear it.

I’d be happy to see Mitchell back, as long as he showed signs of developing some kind of specialty – face-offs, PK, high energy, etc.
Though I suppose Shoot-Out could be his specialty….

He also had an injury riddled season. For 750k, you need a 4th line centre.
We could be paying Manny Malhotra 2.5M for the next 3 years instead.

I hope hes more John Fucking Mitchell this year than fucking John Mitchell.
Not Liking Nikolai Kulemin Means You Have No Soul
Just remember this: it wasn’t that long ago that pretty much everybody around here, including at least one of our Benevolent Overlords, was waaaaaay down on Ian White. The words “useless” and “terrible” got bandied about an awful lot around here when he was being discussed.
Example (not picking on PPP, my point is that what he wrote was essentially convential “wisdom” at the time): September 3, 2008 feature called “Reading the Tea Leafs – Ian White” on this very blog…
In a perfect world, White would have sat all of last season so that Jay Harrison (so long!), Staffan Kronwall, or Anton Stralman would have received a much better chance to showcase their talent. Instead, we were treated to Bryan McCabe Mk II – Miniature Edition. We were treated to seeing an undersized defenceman unable to use his speed, unwilling to physically engage opponents, and completely one-sided. If the puck wasn’t on his forehand then he couldn’t handle it.
The most painful part? While every other defenceman on the Leafs has been injured White just keeps on ticking. There was no relief from his presence on the blueline.
Projected 2008-2009 role/team
If I was in Cliff Fletcher’s shoes White’s Leafs’ career would be over just as soon as I could find someone to trade me a prospect/late round draft pick for him.
I’m not suggesting that Ian White is the second coming of Nik Lidstrom, and I’m not suggesting that every player who’s been described as “terrible” will turn out to be useful. The point is rather that sometimes, players struggle for a bit, then turn it around. Sometimes, of course, they struggle for a bit, carry a purse, get traded to Anaheim and then Calgary, and still can’t understand why their nickname is “dogshit”.
Taking everything into consideration, though – JFM is cheap and young. If what people mean when they say he is “terrible” and “useless” is that he is “not Sidney Crosby”, well, obvious point is obvious, good for you. If what they mean is that he can’t competently perform any role on an NHL team, I say it’s too early to tell about that, and that the evidence is mixed. Prior to struggling a little at the start of last year (the whole team did) and then getting injured, JFM showed some promise. We’re not going to win the Cup this year. If it only costs $750k to try him out again on a limited basis and in a limited role, and as long as he’s not taking ice time away from someone who crucially needs the playing time…well, why the hell wouldn’t we do it?

P.S. – not picking on you either, Clawson, your comment was just the last one on the page.

IN MY DEFENCE!
I was right about what he had contributed up until that point. I had no clue what he could provide. If only I was proven wrong in such amazing and fun ways all of the time!
