Some Cold Water on the Kovalchuk Front
While there are those in cyberspace who believe Burke’s plan is to pursue unrestricted free agent Ilya Kovalchuk — who seems to have priced himself out of signing with any team so far — the GM says he has "no interest" in the winger.
"We are not involved with Ilya Kovalchuk at this time. We have never been involved. I don’t even know who his agent is," said Burke.

I did the math last night. Leafs can’t take on Kovalchuk. We can forget about it.
In loving memory of #21 Chris Higgins......I never even got the chance to say "I Love You"
Heh yup. Although now I kind of think it'd be funny if Isles get him for 10x10.
It was a fun dream while it lasted.
I wonder how many more Colby Armstrongs we can get.

If he doesn’t know who his agent is then Burke is being way overpaid.

Still a chance:
The longer Ilya Kovalchuk remains unsigned by a big market team in the U.S., the more speculation grows that the Leafs are somehow going to get involved in pursuing the 50-goal scorer.
But Burke balked at the kind of mega-contract numbers that such a deal would require and insists the Leafs aren’t involved.
"That is, unless the bottom falls right out of the market and he circles back around," Burke said.

agreed.
It’s never going to happen, so we should forget about it, and start thinking about more practical trades & signings that can go down at the point.

I kind of find it odd
That immediately after free agency opens, Burke does a trade, a couple signings… then takes the weekend off from Kaberle offers. Seriously? Aren’t like, 29 other teams still kicking tires on trade possibilities? And we’re taking the weekend off because there are fireworks in the US on monday?

Be serious. You’re not really suggesting that Burkie is a lazy goat, are you? Not likely.
Not trying to be a dick or anything, but have you ever had to actually negotiate any type of deal? Imposing real time constraints on the discussions is one way of exerting control over the process. It forces your deal partners to have to make choices. In deal-making terms, it’s the difference between standing still on your own blueline, waiting for an opposing player to blow by you and getting on your opponent with a persistent forecheck, hoping he’ll make a mistake.
There are 29 real GMs out there that are trying to evaluate whether Burke is serious when he says he is prepared to keep Kabby for the entire year. Putting out the “gone fishin’” sign and heading off for a holiday weekend is one way of sending the message that he means it when he says he’s listening to offers, but isn’t in any all-fired rush to dispose of one of his assets.

Not to mention
It’s 4th of July weekend in the states, and Pride weekend in Toronto. Burke is a family man, and these are family moments for him. Even if he had the perfect deal on the table, it’ll likely be there monday or tuesday for him.
In Burke We Trust
Even if we deal with Kabs and Finger Burke would still have to fill two d spots as well as get Kovy. With our current cap situation I believe thats close to impossible now. All we can hope for is Burke pulls some sort of swindling awesome deal. (Not involving Kovy)
Our hopes are being left with the current roster outperforming their previous season.
The current roster is radically different from the pre-January 2010 roster that played most of last year, and who’s to say there won’t be more movement before the start of the season and/or during the season? To say “outperforming their previous season” is a bit inaccurate I think. Also, with the amount of youth we have, I think the players we do have that were here last year should have no problem outperforming last season.

I was coming the current roster to the one that ended the season. They aren’t radically different yet. We do need players to play better (or at least more consistantly) than last season (Komi, Dion, JFM, get rid of Kessels streakiness, solid goaltending). I liked what I saw be the end of the season, but I think they’re borderline 8th spot at the moment. Baby steps I suppose.
Then again we could be presidents trophy winners and still go no where in the playoffs so, whatever! Just getting in the playoffs is the priority here. I saw an article that said that Burke has to get this team into the playoffs this season to “justify” the Kessel trade. Their argument was that a non-playoff spot first rounder plus what Boston already has would outweigh the addition of Kessel and I kinda agree. (Though they have to be markedly different picks like 11th in Conference to 2nd round playoffs, if its a potential difference of 1 spot then whatever).
I still think trying to justify the Kessel trade or call it a bust at this point, and after next season as well, is crazy. Give it 3 years until we see what Seguin and the other pick turn into and then you’ll be able to appraise it. They could both be phenomenal or they could both be busts or one of one kind and one of the other. I’m still in the camp that trading 3 unknown entities in picks for a known goal scorer at Kessel’s age is on principle a good trade. Of course, good principles don’t always end in good trades. You just have to wait and see.

Im just going on the history of 2nd overall picks but I agree. Being a Leaf fan has turned me into someone who expects the worst though.
True, usually 2nd overall is a pretty solid pick regardless of draft year. If Burke had made the two 1st’s and a 2nd trade knowing that the first one would be 2nd overall, then I would be starting to consider that a shaky trade to begin with. Unless he knew for sure (impossible) that the second 1st would be 25+, I can’t see justifying it. I believe he thought the first one would be in the range of 10th-15th overall and the second one 15th-20th overall. If things had turned out like that, heck yes, make that trade!

I’m starting to seriously doubt that the Leafs will sign Kovalchuk, but I think we can all agree that anything Burke says in regards to player movement is worthless until it comes to fruition. Burke likes to keep things low-key, so saying he is or isn’t is usually a ploy.

We’re way passed seriously doubt. It’s approaching mathematical impossibility, short of fire-selling our roster.

Or short of Kovy realizing that nobody is going to offer what he wants, and jacking his price down a ways. At that point we would become one of many teams who could aford him, and the circus could start up all over.
He already turned down one 10/10 from Atl, maybe he will again for the Isle. And maybe after that Mitchel will discover a franchise player scoring touch. Ya don’t want to go hanging your hat on every possibility just because it isn’t 110% impossible.
Salary can always be moved.
I have two thoughts on Kovy: he either wants the money, or the win. Or both (okay 3).
For the money, the Isles are offering a rumored 10yr/100mil. The Thrashers offered more. It’s very likely the best tabled offer thus far. If it’s about money, those kinds of teams will pay the most for his services.
For the win, the Kings have made strides in the last few years, and have a full pipeline of young talent looking to make waves this year, along with a decent roster. They are a couple moves from greatness, Kovy being one. The Devils are perrenial contenders. These would be his best options, because they are in a position to afford a player of his caliber, at a reasonable and realistic price and term. Philly, Boston, Chicago, Pittsburg, Vancouver, Washington…..all would need to make room for him, making a signing difficult without moving the pieces first, and trying to move pieces in a hurry afterwards guarantees you the short end of the stick.
The Leafs were 29th last year, and only added Versteeg and Armstrong to the current roster since then, while losing Stalberg. Doesn’t scream “heavy improvement”, so the win factor is out, at least for this year. While the Buds are the richest team in the league, our GM won’t sign a term longer than 5 years, a self-imposed cap. So much for the money factor.
I think Burke knows exactly who Jay Grossman is, he’s just tamping the flames of the fans who desparately want Kovy here. I guess the greatest question Burke should ask himself is “Is Kovalchuk a generational talent?” I’d wager that offensively he is, but not defensively. That said, I feel he’s worth pursuing, but on the terms that you are prepared to meet him at, and not beyond, and clearly he has gone beyond Burke territory.
It’s not the end of the world. See 1967ers posts about former great Leaf teams. No scoring leaders, no standout superstars, but a lunch-pail brigade that all contributed and played hard every night, making opposing teams pay a physical price, win or lose. Burkie seems to be channeling Punch Imlach and Conn Smythe.
In Burke We Trust
That 29th place was heavily impacted by the early play of the team which did not look like what it is now. With that in perspective as well as the Versteeg and Armstrong signings (so far this summer) we have a vastly different team.
While I agree, the team is still considerable as a playoff bubble team, and to an outsider looking in, like Kovalchuk, it’s still “I’m going to play with Kessel…and who?”
In Burke We Trust
I have also been trying to crunch the numbers
He isn’t coming to Toronto – even if we move Kaberle and Grabovski(and not take any salary back) and waive Finger, then fill in the balance of our 23 man roster with league minimum guys, we still can’t afford anywhere near to what he wants.

while I am realistic about Kovy becoming a Leaf, just say Burke gets him to bite on a reasonable contract (sub 8) he WILL make the cap room, players will be traded for pennies on the dollar etc
room can, and will be made

At this point, I believe Burke when he says he’s not interested. I’m actually kind of upset that Kovy had yet to sign anywhere. I wish he would just get it over with, so we could move on to the next best thing in regards to a top-six forward for the leafs.
