Stevie Y Kicking the Tires On Kaberle?
You know things are getting serious when Tampa Bay is talking puck in the middle of August.
The author also raises (and answers) a good question; is Malone enough to get a deal done? Probably not.

Yeah, Tampa could definitely use Kabby, but I don’t see a match. Especially not with their depth coming from in goal, which we have a number of prospects at already.

Someone mentioned this on Kuklas Korner yesterday and for some reason they seemed to think Kaberle wasn’t enough for Malone.

why art thou so underrated around the League?

Yzerman’s gotten some serious browie points in my eyes this past year.. if my favourite Leaf ends up playing for his team, he gets a bonus.
Please StevieY, save us the wait and make the trade NOW!!!*
*offer only valid in conjunction with a (preferrably young) top-6 forward and/or decent prospects

Also
Yzerman has been pretty savvy with his trades and asset management this summer. I don’t see him giving full value, let alone overpaying for kaberle.

Your optimism
I need it.
I feel like I’m going to need Monday off after the heavy drinking I’m going to have to do Sunday to forget whatever bullshit return we get for Kabs.

Any conversation with Tampa likely starts and stops with Steve Downie. I really don’t understand why people keep saying that the Leafs would want Ryan Malone, a 30 year old, 40-50 point 20-25 goal scorer, who costs $4.5 Million UNTIL HE’S 35.
To ask “Is Ryan Malone Enough?” would be like asking “Would Jeff Finger be enough for Victor Hedman?”
It’s a terrible contract for a guy who’s post-prime, even if he is “willing to dig in the corners.” Taking Ryan Malone (more specifically, his contract) off a team would flat out be doing that team a favor; Ryan Malone’s 4.5M for 5 years couldn’t get moved even if TB included a first round pick.
Ryan Malone and Steve Downie, however, might earn you Kaberle. If you’re looking for more than Kabby, start pulling guys from the top end of this list.

If he’s a Leaf, I’ll have to like him :S

“To ask "Is Ryan Malone Enough?" would be like asking "Would Jeff Finger be enough for Victor Hedman?"”
Not even close. There is a huge difference between trading a 32 year old, soon to be UFA defenseman for a guy who scores 20+ goals, and trading a guy who should be in the AHL for a young defenseman with a ton of potential.
Ideally I would want somebody 5 years younger but I doubt there are many teams lining up to trade their good young forwards for somebody who only has year left on his contract. If Burke wants a top 6 forward that bad it will probably have to be somebody like Malone.
by Brad Ackerson on Aug 14, 2010 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions
That’s why I hope he goes for a picks/prospects package instead. I said in the other thread, any team that wants to use Kaberle as a veteran rental on a contender is going to try to make a push, and as such won’t want to give up any of its top 6 forwards.
The better package will likely be a picks/prospect package. C’mon guys we’re in a rebuild here, and Burke telling us we are trying to compete next year will likely do more harm than good in the long run.

I agree and I think thats the way Burke will end up going.
by Brad Ackerson on Aug 14, 2010 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions
No, I agree, but I had to leave as I was writing and wasn’t going to look for a perfect analogy. But Finger doesn’t belong in the AHL, he’s just massively overpaid. Malone, too, is massively overpaid. his 40-50 points required 27% of his time be spent on a line with Stamkos and Lecavalier. We don’t have a rocket richard winner.
So the only answer to both trades should be “Hell no!”
by Bower Power on Aug 14, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions
That’s fine if you ignore contracts; if Malone were on the same deal as Kaberle it would be a decent trade.
But Kaberle has a very good contract, and Malone has a very bad one. Useful player or not, Yzerman might not be unhappy to give him away for nothing if the opportunity arose.
I've been looking at the sky

Yeah, if Malone were on waivers I doubt there would be any takers. He has negative value with that contract.

Being reunited with Kubina would be a nice consolation for Kabby if he has to leave TO

Fuck forgot to cancel Leafs tv this spring. lol Leafs beating the sens 5 -0 in the second during the 2005/2006 season. Aubin is in net. Tucker is being a shit disturber, and Belak is on the ice. What the hell happened to Tellqvist? and I forgot that Ondrus was in teh NHL at that time.
Also I hope Kabby goes West as it will ease teh pain.
Fucking Heatley just scored.
As a Toronto sports fan I proudly follow the lessons of lachrymology.
That must have been the last game of the season series against them, I seem to remember the Leafs losing 7 of 8 the Sens that year, many of them embarrassing blowout losses.
Boo hoo!

it was. also Alfy turtled the entire time he for Tucker.
As a Toronto sports fan I proudly follow the lessons of lachrymology.
lol tucker and Alfredsson were “fighting” as in Tucker was feeding him shots to the face while Alfy was covering his face begging for the officials to pull them apart.
As a Toronto sports fan I proudly follow the lessons of lachrymology.
I said it then and i’ll say it now the Leafs should of kept Tucker. I have a crazy uncle named Darcy, and I’ve always wondered if it was in the name or if he’s just crazy.

Guh.
Stevie Y has been puling off some awesome moves lately, and I don’t want to be swindled.
In any event, I think I’d prefer Komisarek gone, and Kaberle extended.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
agh. Im holding my breath and crossing my fingers, hoping its not Malone that we get back.
The thing is, Komisarek is a guy Burke specifically targetted (one of his first major signings), while Kaberle is a leftover.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And trading away recently signed UFA’s looks bad.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
according to NHL 10’ it is. i agree with you in that i would rather see kaberle stay and komi go, and with Burke, you never really know. however i still see the trade being Kaberle + marginal prospect for top 6 forward
Unless this forward is going to put up a solid 60 points, I don’t know if this is going to be an improvement for our offence. It makes me sick to talk about this, but I can’t help myself.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
old defense men and young forwards, that’s what i want to see on the ice for the Leafs. Nothing’s scarier that an old grizzled defense man, standing in front of his net waiting to cup check the nearest opponent. Kaberle is just starting to get a little grizzle on him, i say extend his stay and do away with another younger defense man.

I’d ask what you have against Malone; I like him.
But then I remember what site this is, yous guys have advanced stats and such at your disposal. Malone’s crap.

Why do you like him? He’s overpaid and the term left on his contract isn’t too good either.

Yeah, it’s not a knock on his talent, it’s a knock on his price tag. He’s paid like a first liner, which is isn’t.

He played most of the season on a line with superstars Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis
From wikipedia. He put up points with these two guys. Something tells me Colton Orr might get 20 on this line, in this division. So as far as i’m concerned, i may rather have Kaberle than Downie + Malone. Gotta anty up Stevie Y.
Better than Wikipedia, it’s Dobber Hockey:

by Bower Power on Aug 14, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions
Actually (and I should have made this clear) I was talking about Downie. I don’t think either of them are worth it. So we are either getting a Pick / Prospect + Downie, or more picks / prospects to take Malone. Or I DO NOT WANT!
stamkos or bust!
