Leafs acquire Matt Lashoff
PPP Edit: Linked the official press release. It's an AHL move which is why no Leafs beat writers saw it coming. Andy Strickland broke it as far as I can see. Good on the HockeyBuzzard.
Could be a way to get a contract off of the team's books or maybe Burke hated the thought of someone else having a defenceman.

MOAR DEFENSEMEN!!!!!
lol agreed I want to post this at TSN cause the comments are facepalm inducing. But that would require signing up, far too much effort. I see he was picked 22nd overall and is only 23, I wonder what his potential is. Never can have too much depth I suppose.
As a Toronto sports fan I proudly follow the lessons of lachrymology.
I feel the same way – facepalm inducing comments but I am far to lazy to sign-up.

Nice deal
Clear out 2 filler roles for one (probably) filler D, but who has a much higher upside if he can finally put everything together.
Lashoff likely won’t turn into much but Berry and Giliati certainly wont turn into anything worthwhile either, so atleast we a getting rid of a contract. Good trade.
Here is Lashoff’s profile at Hockey’s Future for what it’s worth http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/matt_lashoff
Why would tampa trade this guy (for nothing)? He seems like he could actually be an NHLer one day (even a bottom pair guy).

From Raw Charge:
This move can also be seen as a sort of salary dump. Lashoff’s contract for 2010-11 is a one-way deal, he makes $550,000 playing in the NHL or AHL. With no guarantee that he will make the NHL squad in Tampa… Well, sending him elsewhere seemed like it made sense
…
The move clears out some of the back-log in on-the-cusp defensemen in the Lightning system, and a contract tied to a player that very well might not make the team.

The move clears out some of the back-log in on-the-cusp defensemen in the Lightning system, and a contract tied to a player that very well might not make the team.
I was just wondering… shouldn’t that end as: “…and two contracts for two players coming back that very well might not make the team.” I mean isn’t that usually the rule with salary dumps – you have to take something you don’t really need (like in this case the extra AHLer) as the cost for a salary dump?

I think the guys we sent have AHL salaries… Lashoff only has a one way deal, so he gets paid $525,000 whether in the NHL or AHL.

ding ding ding
Say what you want about MLSE… but they’re willing to pay a guy 500,000 to play for our minor league team. The 2 guys going to Tampa combined will make like 100,000.

Is there any hope this is preliminary to getting rid of some pieces of the league’s most expensive defense with the 2nd worst GAA?
Bingo.
The defense core itself is fine if our goaltending is a least hovering around league average.
Bobby Ryan...can he be acquired?

To answer your question though, Dave, I don’t think this is a sign that Finger will be moved / stashed on the Marlies. This seems more like helping Tampa out (by taking on salary), freeing up an ELC, and picking up a prospect who will increase the competition for ice-time on our young Marlies defence corp (i beleive this makes it Aulie, Blacker, Mikus, Lashoff and… I forget, someone help me out.)
Finger? ;)

AHL
i’m gunna go out on a limb here and say that this guy is not gunna see anything more than middle of the pack AHL minutes this season…a D-man with some NHL experience to help our real young guns on the back end.
There’s always that chance that he’s put into a package with another NHL D for a forward, but im not holdin my breath for that deal hehe

This trade: TB Salary Dump + Leafs’ need for SPC room = AHL d-man.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
Tinfoil time:
I think that this may also be the kind of favour Burke likes to do so he has a chip to call in somewhere down the line.
Also never hurts to help out a new GM by doing something that’s irrelevant for you, but can help him cut payroll a little and get into his good books from day 1.

If someone could point me to a move where Burke cashed in said chip I might be willing to buy this…for now, I’ll just refer to this as the tinfoil option.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
ya…technically wasn’t it a “tinfoil option” when we took Olaf Kolzig and that other random defenseman a couple years ago?

wasn’t that for help in the draft… re: moving up? O’goodtimes!

sooooo then really it just ended up being a show of good faith thing in the end.
but good call, i forgot it was as high as a fourth rounder

Also
that deal took just enough salary off the books that Tampa qualified for revenue sharing.

memory lane
you remember when trades were just about talent for talent? hehe
Clearly i gotta step up my research game a bit cus that’s a really interesting bonus in that trade…thoroughly impressed with the insight.
"i get paid for the practices...i'd play the geams for free" - Tim Horton
at the time there were some concerns that Burke basically took the salary for players he had no intention of ever using and bought a draft pick – which he did.
But it helped a southern NHL team in turmoil get revenue sharing, so I think the Board of Governors looked the other way.
To make it a true ‘hockey deal’ the Leafs sent a career minor-leaguer back the other way.
Good times – I hoped to see more like that, but I guess the situation needs to be just right before those deals can actually take place.

Trading two pretty much useless players for one player who appears to still have some potential isn’t exactly my idea of a favour.

Burke clearing space to allow Hanson to be signed under the total contract limit? Moving two, adding Lashoff = 49 i believe
bingo!
i hadn’t even thought of Hanson…that’s a great call…knew the move was to free up a contract but i didn’t know who it might be for…think you hit the nail on the head here

Great point
Hadn’t thought of Hanson. That could very much be it.

Hanson is slot 49; they still have 1 more spot to sign a player.

In the past 15 seconds, I’ve gone from ‘Who the fuck is Tim Brent?’ to ‘Who the fuck is Matt Lashoff?’
I think this is progress.
I also think that this not only frees up a space so we can stay under 50 total contracts, it also frees up spots at forward on the Marlies for the Dale Mitchell/Stefanovich/Kadri/D’Amigo influx next month.
