Wanna Trade?
Brian Burke basically wrote today's FTB for me. The Maple Leafs acquired Matt Lashoff, the #22 overall pick in the 2005 NHL draft, from the Tamp Bay Lightning for Alex Berry and Stefano Giliati. Obviously, this is a minor deal. Lashoff has spent the majority of his four-year pro career in the AHL, including two and a half seasons in Providence and a season in Norfolk. Berry was drafted 153rd overall in 2005 by the Leafs. He played four seasons at UMass in the NCAA before joining the Marlies last year. In 55 games, Berry recorded 7 points. Giliati was signed as a free agent in 2008 by the Leafs after an 87 point season with Lewiston of the QMJHL. He spent 2008-09 with the Marlies and split time between Reading and Toronto (AHL) last year. Burke moved two borderline AHLers for a solid AHL defenseman. And he cut a contract off the Leafs reserve list at the same time. Not a bad move. I'm not predicting anything, but this does open the door for Burke to sign another player.

If everything goes according to plan
Lashoff should never see a minute on the big club. There are way too many young prospects ahead of him. So this is strickly an AHL deal (prolly Nonis) to improve the Marlie D. 2 things I like; the Leafs and Lightning arre now comfortable trading with each other and the Leaf brass isnt shy to spend half a mil on depth AHL guys. This is a perfect example of the advantage a wealthy team has over other clubs in a cap world. (and stealing the best goalie coaches and hiring 157 scouts)

I wouldn't go THAT far
Lashoff has had 4 years to prove himself and a some NHL games so I agree it’s unlikely he becomes a serviceable nhler.
That being said he is still young (same age as our frat pack prospects last year), has shown flashes of decent-strong NHL play (post deadline with Tampa in 08/09), plays well in the ahl, and defenseman do take longer to develop. I’d say he still has the potential to develop into a number 4 d and second powerplay quarterback. It’s just not very likely.
Compared to our other d prospects how much older is he than mikus or aulie or holzer?
by BCapp on Aug 28, 2010 10:21 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I am not trying to say he’ll be a #4 d on the leafs just that he could do it. If he outplays the other young guys and finger/lebda in preseason and ahl then I think he could get injury call up time

so we're no longer in consensus
that this deal is simply about the Leafs picking up salary from the Lightning, in exchange for shedding one contract spot?
Anyway, I’ll speculate that this means Nonis and co. ran numbers similar to Birky’s and realized the Leafs are projected to finish too low – that even with Kadri in the lineup and scoring 15 goals, they’d still need another 15 more to get to the playoffs.
So I’m going to speculate that they’ll sign some free agent forward who can pot 15. Don’t know if anyone’s on the market still. Alternately, they will themselves take a salary dump as part of a deal for a forward.

I can’t speak for others but my take is that I don’t EXPECT lashoff to make the team but I am not just writing it off as impossible. Basically I am happy with this as a trade for an extra spc slot but I will take what ever potential he has left as gracy
by BCapp on Aug 28, 2010 12:30 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
In regards to the fa
He will need to score more than 15 because he will need to replace the scoring already provided by the player he is replacing at put up 15 MORE. We’re basically looking at a 25-30 goal scorer and there is no one to got that bill available
by BCapp on Aug 28, 2010 12:33 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
bill guerin, as suggested by Yakov?
why not sign him to a 1 year?
i disagree about him “displacing” 10 goals. He wouldn’t be displacing a 10 goal scorer we don’t have – according ot Birky’s numbers, the goal scorers are going to be
Kessel 35
Versteeg 21
Kulemin 17
Armstrong 16
Grabovski 14
Bozak 18
The rest of the forwards have way less than 10 goals projected for the upcoming season. Adding even a 15 goal scorer comes at no cost.

Except there is limited top 6 minutes slot
So one of those guys will get displaced to the bottom 6 and they will decrease the amount they could score
by BCapp on Aug 28, 2010 7:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
apparently the leafs jsut signed Clark MacArthur who has scored 15 and 16 goals in the past couple years….interesting

Between Holzer, Aulie, Lashoff, Blacker, Mikus on D and Rynnas and Reimer in net – the marlie’s goal prevention department look pretty sick. I might have to get down to Ricoh.

Is scrivens expected to go to the echo?
by BCapp on Aug 28, 2010 10:24 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
You'd have to think so
With Rynnas and Reimer battling for a spot on the Marlies.
Still surprises me that both Scrivens and Rynnas were lured here by Allaire. Gotta love Allaire.

There’s also Andrew Engelage. As far as I can tell, he’s still ours too.

Marlies – Jussi, Riemer
Reading – Scrivins, Engelage

Information you should know
I met Finger at the border when he was signed by Toronto (I used to work as a border officer at Sarnia) and I don’t think you’d want to be hit by his vehicle. I can’t remember the make, but it was some huge SUV other than an Escalade, probably a Ford Explorer. Although now that he’s made several million dollars, he might’ve traded that in for something a lot smaller and faster. I’m thinking getting hit by a Lamborghini wouldn’t be so bad, probably just chop you off at the knees rather than flattening your face with the bumper! haha
