EA NHL 11 Rookie Challenge..
Is anyone from PPP going to be attending the event in Toronto today? Kadri will be one of the rookies participating, as well as Taylor Hall and others.
I can’t wait to see Kadri make a throat slashing gesture toward his opponent before loading up the game.

The demo..
I love it. I think EA went the extra mile to provide a sense of realism to the game with the broken and dropped sticks, as well as the new physics engine. The physics aren’t perfect, but it’s a start, and when the game gets it right (a thundering check into the boards) it can be a beautiful thing. Furthermore, the Be a GM mode will now support the full CBA rules. You can poach RFAs with offer sheets, and you can use front-loaded contracts. No idea if the league will reject them or not, however Additionally, you can play through the pre-season now and decide who makes the team out of camp. Pretty hot.
Not sure if I’m allowed to promote my own work like this (if not, just erase this), but you can read my impressions from Microsoft’s X’10 event here: http://gamenorth.ca/2010/08/19/x10-nhl-11/

I hope they change a few aspects of Be A Pro. I hated that if you simmed games, your player basically gets demoted. Also, they way you improve your player bugged me

to elaborate
I think the gameplay is mildly better. Yeah, the hits do feel better, broken sticks are a realistic touch. I’m dissapointed about the recycled commentary, but I can get over that. The thing that really gets me (in the demo) is the scenerio that they put you in. Last year was pitch perfect, you’re a prospect making your last impression right before the NHL. This time around they drop you into the third period of game 7 of the stanley cup finals? What? Jump the shark much? This is like Nintendo offering a mario demo that lets you beat bowser. To make it worse, it showed just how little the game knows what an important moment game 7 of the finals is. It felt completely stale. I actually cringed as they showed the awarding of the cup. ugh.
I guess I’m more partial to position lock (be a player) also, and I couldn’t find that in the demo, so that might be adding bias. I’ll just have to wait for next week.

Last year yuou could do BAP as well as game 7 of the cup final.
This year they got rid of the BAP demo and put in HUT (Hockey ultimate team)
This demo was solid and IMO had some great replayability

A) Is trainign camp and preseason even confirmed for the game?
B) Most people want to be able to play the game 5 on 5 so thats why they had the game game 7 stuff
C) HUT is a new game mode for this year, so they need to showcase that to get people who have ‘10 to buy it or else most people will think it’s ’10 with updated rosters. That aspect is just good marketing.
D) BAP has been in the game for 2 years, no need to market it somemore

a) no, just where’d I’d like to see BAP go. Keep it in sync with the hockey year, so to speak.
b) 5 v 5 feels outdated to me, I would have assumed the position lock portion of the game would be the bigger draw for online players.
c) and d) HUT just seems like an updated Be a GM mode

I’m just saying this feels like a step back from last year. Admitedly, this is a concern of taste. I don’t care for controlling everyone on a team, and I don’t want to be a GM. So like I said, one more week – and I’ll be the happiest little leftwinger on PPP.

Someone else put it in a limerick
So I know we’ve been talking about MacArthur as a pump and dump, but is Armstrong another candidate?
Before the trade deadline (more of a depth chart than a line combo, so don’t nitpick):
Kulemin-BOZAK-Kessel
MacArthur-Grabovski-Versteeg/Armstrong
Sjostrom-Mitchell-Versteeg/Armstrong
Brown-Hanson-Orr
After the trade deadline, MacArthur AND Cheese gone:
Kulemin-BOZAK-Kessel
Mueller-Kadri-Caputi
Sjostrom-Grabovski-Versteeg
Brown-Mitchell-Hanson
Orr
It largely plays off the chemistry kids should be making all year if they’re in the AHL. Versteeg – who had a quote about his 2nd and 3rd line flexibility around here somewhere – would “blender” together frequently with Caputi. It makes our third line less of a checking line, and more of a puck possession line, but to me, it seems very “Brian Burke” to steal the media spotlight around trade deadline by bringing up an entire line of kids to get their NHL seasoning post-deadline. Only taking 3/4ths of Armstrong’s 3Mil salary helps the cap setup, and giving Armstrong and MacArthur time on the S line (two players who do NOT fit the bill described by Birky) should raise their deadline value.
Also…it does mean that “The trade deadline will be our preseason.”
If I'm losing an argument, I ask myself "What would a real journalist do?"
Then I cower behind: "You still don't get it. Deal with it." Thanks, James Wallace.

Have any of these pump and dump trades happened before on another team? (I can’t think of one on the Leafs post-lockout) I get the feeling that we talk about this as a tactic, like burying Finger in the minors, except there actually is some sort of precedent for burying contracts in the minors, where I can’t think of a pump and dump trade that’s happened yet.

I go to PPP for all things Leafs
But today I must air a few of my beefs
Our leaf loyals, our "blue: knights" were recently beaten
In NHL 2011 by a Habs fan, whom must have been cheat’n
Now limericks were to be written
By some of those who were bitten
For they sullied our pride by losing the prize
To a fan of the dirtiest and evilest franchise
But leafs fans will take this one with their heads held high
Knowing that Schenn and Phaneuf will soon make Cammalleri cry
The leafs will avenge this loss not by some two bit poem
But killing the team they play Oct 7th at home
And every time this year the Habs play the buds
The ice will run red from the Canadiens blood
Elie Aintabi had to win that game to keep a small piece of his manhood
Practicing all day and night he had to do whatever he could
Because the Habs chances of beating the leafs he knew
Are the same as an Eklund rumour to be true
This is not a rumour but an (E5) you can mark it as true
The kind of pride you feel when you cheer for the white and blue

A 60 goal season
two 50 goal seasons, and another five 40 goal seasons. All within his first 8 NHL seasons.
It’s a lot of goals.

Oh and
in year 9, he probably would have ended up with 40 goals again, but the strike shortened 94-95 to only 46 games. He had 23 goals when it finished on 21.1% shooting, playing with the Penguins (and Jagr, Francis, etc.).

There are 31 players in the NHL with at least as many points as Sundin got with the leafs. Of those, 4 played for the same team their whole career and three scored more than Sundin’s Leafs+Nucks totals: Mikita, Yzerman, Lemieux, Modano. Perreault played his whole career with Buffalo and scored 5 more in Buffalo than Sundin in Toronto.
So that’s 4, at least.

It’s stupid to reward players for having a short career. To say “the last seven years of his career were ordinary” (not about Sundin, but elsewhere in the piece) is to say that “he would be in if he’d had a shorter career.” Longevity is to be rewarded, even if they were post-prime.
If I'm losing an argument, I ask myself "What would a real journalist do?"
Then I cower behind: "You still don't get it. Deal with it." Thanks, James Wallace.

Claude Lemieux in but Sundin out. He’s committing the very sin he condemned in relation to Dick Duff (honouring complementary player on Cup winning teams). What a joke.
Doug Gilmour is my favourite player ever but even I can’t put him above Mats career wise.

Doug Gilmour
was in the top 10 in the NHL in assists 5 times, and in points 3 times. He played in the All-Star game twice. He won the Selke Trophy once.
He was a better than PPG player in the Playoffs (35 points in 21 games for the Leafs in 92-93), and he won the Stanley Cup with Calgary. He played for 20 years with 7 teams and accumulated 1414 points in 1474 games.
Sundin played in the NHL All-Star game 7 times, he was a 2nd team All-Star twice, He was in the top 10 in goals 3 times, assists once, and points twice.
He was less than a PPG player in the playoffs, with a best showing of 13 points in 11 games for the Leafs in 2000-01 (or 16 points in 17 games in 98-99). He never won a Cup, or a Major Trophy. He played for 18 years for 3 different teams and accumulated 1349 points in 1346 games.
Aside from the number of All-Star games and his meaningful place in Leafs lore (which is really about the same as Gilmour) I don’t really see how Sundin’s career is so much better than Gilmour’s. If Sundin deserves to be in, then so does Dougie.

They’re both in as far as I’m concerned. I just think Sundin’s stats are really depressed by (1) playing virtually his entire career in the dead puck era; (2) never playing with another elite, in his prime forward (remember, Dougie had Andreychuk and Clark, and some great players in Calgary); (3) Quinn’s “roll four lines” philosophy. Put Mats on Gilmour’s teams, with Gilmour’s ice time, and I think he’s well over 1500 points.
This is all speculation but that’s why I put him above Gilmour—who again, is my favourite player of all time.

Well...
There was once a man from Nantucket
Who found a spot for his hat, where he stuck it
He was not very bright
And when he turned on the light
He found that his hat was a bucket.
That the guy?
So did you guys hear about the Washington Post journalist who wrote a fake rumour on his twitter account, to prove a point? It seems he’s been suspended.

What point was he trying to prove?
That twitter is unreliable? Don’t most people know that one by now?

He’s dumb. His entire rant was about people passing along rumours unsourced. Except, the idiot didn’t take into account that people trusted him. So when he said Big Ben was getting five games people figured that he knew what he was talking about and credited him with breaking the news of the suspension.
In short, he proved absolutely nothing other than re-inforcing that no one goes into journalism because they are MENSA candidates*

Had he used a personal account rather than his business one, there would be no problem. But because he used his official Post account I can see why his bosses frowned upon it.
