With Fredrik Sjostrom likely to miss much of camp after off-season shoulder surgery, Hanson may also get a shot at earning time as a penalty killer.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!.
Seriously, let’s hope he wasn’t the only thing holding our PK together, I doubt it, but we’ll see. Also this makes the whole which youngin’ will make the team out of camp debate more concrete, looks as though someone has to now.

Let's not get carried away
First of all, it only says he’s likely to miss camp, so probably won’t miss too many games.
Second, I thinking we’re putting way too much emphasis on Sjostrom. Sjostrom was clearly one of our better PK guys, but the biggest difference in our PK post-Jan 31 was goaltending. Let’s say Sjostrom misses 10 games. He averaged 2:14/gm SH last year. That’s 22:30 of PK time to replace. The Leafs gave up 5.3 PP shots/gm last year, and were shorthanded about 5:30/gm (I got this by adding up total SH TOI of their D, dividing by 2, then dividing by 82—doing the same for total TOI gave me 60.4, which sounds about right with OT). So they gave up about 1 shot/min shorthanded. Let’s assume Sjostrom’s absence means 0.25 more shots/minute (which is a ridiculously high assumption). That means 5.6 more shots over 10 games due to his absence; or rounding waaay up, 1 goal in 10 games.
Bottom line: this is not something to be stressing about, folks.

That’s not a counterpoint, that’s a point.
That is, we have enough other things to worry about without worrying about Sjostrom (maybe) missing 10 games. Hanson or whomever can adequately fill his 10 minutes/game.

Sjostrom had shoulder surgery? News to me.
When I read the nickname Testicula, the first thing that popped into my head was a vampiristic scrotum that can only be killed with a silver cross driven through the vas deferens.
Me too.
Damn you MSM for missing this one until now.

He played
17 shifts in the last game of the season, so I don’t remember when it happened.

Here we go
Sjostrom’s shoulder finally healthy: Maple Leafs RW Fredrik Sjostrom returned to the lineup on Thursday against the Devils after missing six games with a shoulder injury. He had no points in 14:48 of ice time and finished at even. He has no points in his last five games.
(Updated 03/18/2010)
That was on March 18th… it must have bothered him until the end of the year and he had the surgery after.

Why is everyone assuming he’ll be missing any games at all? The wording is “likely miss most of camp”… the way I interpret that is that he will probably return before the end of camp, and will not miss any games. Of course, with anything medical there are no guarantees on recovery time. But it’s not like it says “Sjostrom to miss first month of regular season, possibly more.”

It just caught me by surprise, which is rare for Leafs coverage.
I’m actually impressed Sjostrom went this long without anyone finding out (or at least publicly reporting it).

well, thats sort of what i meant. I say “hopefully he isnt gone too long” in the sense that I hope he is back in time for the season

Missing most of camp likely means starting the year in the press box to be honest. Won’t be game shape to start.

AHL conditioning? if that is the case, wouldn’t he be waiver-exempt?

yeah im pretty sure its okay
conditioning stints can be a small window once per year. dont know if that is in addition to injury recovery or not.
either way they can sneak him through no problemo
