I would take Savard on one Condition...

So I don’t consider myself an expert in any way but seeing as the Kaberle trade window closes in the next two weeks there has to be something happening we don’t know about.

I think we should revist the Marc Savard for Tomas Kaberle talk. The Bruins are 3 million above the cap and need to cut salary. It is definitely hard to find takers for an aging player on a seven year deal coming off and injury riddled season. Not to mention his $4M cap hit until 2016-2017. In general, I have been opposed the acquisition of Savard until another article sparked my curiosity. The way it stands, the Leafs have no first round pick next year due to the Kessel trade but the Leafs should amend that by getting that pick back in this trade.

Maple Leafs Trade:

Tomas Kaberle $4,250,000

Luca Caputi $833,333

Prospect (Brayden Irwin, Jesse Blacker

Bruins Trade:

Mark Savard $4,007,143

Andrew Ference $2,250,000

Leafs 2011 First round pick

So my logic is:

- Bruins Strengthen their defensive core with Kaberle

- The Bruins get an NHL ready prospect in Caputi who they get put on their roster at a cheaper cost and get some production from

- The Leafs get the top six forward they were looking for even though it comes at 7 years $4M

- Andrew Ference can add depth to the Maple Leafs defensive corps or be buried in the minors with Jeff Finger. Bruins should have no problem moving Ference with the arrival of Kaberle and the growth of Boychuk.

- The Leafs give up a good prospect to balance the trade out

If that trade went through my second move would be to turn around with both our first and our second round picks and put an offer sheet on Bobby Ryan who has not been able to work out anything with Anaheim. I believe if we offered slightly more term and money than the Kessel deal the Ducks would be forced to make a difficult decision. With the imminent return of Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya at give or take $3M the Ducks would be pressed against the salary cap if Ryan got offered close to $6M. If Anaheim doesn’t match, the Leafs get a better version of the former third wheel Milan Lucic for Kessel and Savard. They remain under the salary cap by simply demoting Finger and possibly Ference to the minors and aquire two legitimate top six forwards in what quickly turns into a great summer.

However more likely the ducks would find away to match the offer sheet at which point I would turn my focus to another RFA  James Neal of the Dallas Stars who had a breakout campaign last year and the Whitby boy has a ton of room to improve.

Worst case scenario the Leafs regain their first round pick for the next train wreck of a season and are at a minimum rewarded for being terrible yet again. Because lets not kid ourselves Colby Armstron and Kris Versteeg are great pickups but they aren’t taking a second last place team and helping them make the playoffs.

Something to ponder

Would you be willing to make that trade??

Which RFA would you love to see in the Blue and White?

Once the Bruins put Sturm on LTIR, they will be under the cap. So they don’t HAVE to trade him.

by Cat Smasher on Aug 6, 2010 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

Looks like you

need more info on how LTIR really works!

Just because a player is on LTIR does not automatically grant the team extra cap space. In the event a player is placed on LTIR, his cap hit still counts toward the team’s overall cap payroll. Relief only comes if replacing the player’s salary pushes the team’s cap payroll to date over the cap. The amount of relief is limited to the amount the team has gone over the cap, not the entire amount of the injured player’s salary.

In other words, it’s not free space. That would only be a very temperary solution to a bigger problem, and may end up crushing their cap space even more next year.

Tick Tock, Tomas. Tick Tock.
A drinking team with a hockey problem.

by nhlcheapshot on Aug 6, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL

Umm they will have to replace him, that 3 million, with other players.

“An LTI can be covered by replacement players, as long as the replacement salaries do not exceed the salary of the injured player.”

Like I said, once he goes on LTIR, they will be under the cap, allowing them to bring in an addition player or two. Probably bringing them up from Providence, which they can then be sent right back down.

That’s 3 million they will have to play with.

by Cat Smasher on Aug 6, 2010 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, the Cap hit never goes down. You are just allowed to bring in a player who has an equal or lesser cap hit.

Last season I was under the same mistaken impression that the cap hit actually goes down.

That’s just delaying the reckoning. They’ll get boned by Seguin’s bonuses.

by Cat Smasher on Aug 6, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

How bad are the Bruins’ cap problems? CapGeek.com has the club over the cap by $3.088 million. That figure includes Marco Sturm’s $3.5 million salary, but does not factor in a spare forward up front. Sturm is recovering from knee surgery and is not expected to be ready to play until mid-November at the earliest.

That leaves him eligible to be placed on long-term injured reserve, which in turn would give the Bruins relief for his contract. Taking Sturm’s hit off the cap might even be enough to carry that 13th healthy forward, though CapGeek.com’s numbers suggest even a minimum-salary player making $500,000 wouldn’t fit if Sturm’s LTIR is the only move Chiarelli makes. http://www.nesn.com/2010/08/marco-sturm-can-give-bruins-temporary-cap-relief-but-they-still-need-solutions.html

by Cat Smasher on Aug 6, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

With Seguin in the fold and Blake Wheeler signed last week to a one-year, $2.2 million contract, the Bruins remain over the cap. But Marco Sturm will be placed on long-term injured reserve, allowing the Bruins to exceed the cap by his $3.5 million salary.

by Cat Smasher on Aug 6, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

if they were exactly at the cap, they could exceed

but only by the amount equal to his absent salary (= daily salary X days on IR)
if he’s back in december 1, thats day 55 of the season, which is less than 30% of the season.
that could get them $1m in LTIR “credit” to use on a replacement player.

but thats if they are already at the cap. since they are already over, this isnt allowed. they need to get under the cap before the season starts.
