"Vesa Toskala had a contract offer earlier this summer to play in the NHL from the Flames, but turned it down because he wanted to still be a No. 1 netminder."

No. I did not know that. From now on, when asked, I’ll tell my friends, “Jared says he has easier ways for you to catch herpes. You should go see him. In person.”

Too much
According to my source, the offer was for north of $1-million, which would have been good deal for Toskala given he was coming off of two poor years in Toronto. He also apparently had interest from a Swedish team, but his asking price was too high.

does he also have raycrofts agent?

cause how those 2 both got nhl offers is beyond me. raycroft got TWO years. thats mental

by lucacereda on Sep 13, 2010 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

Raycroft has at least figured out his role, and he’s going to keep getting NHL jobs as a result.

Toskala is just delusional.

I don’t usually feel much sympathy for agents, but this one my heart goes out to. Any NHL offer for Toskala deserves nomination in the NHL agent hall of fame.

It’s been difficult keeping it under wraps until his article came out.

I don’t know what is funnier, him turning down the offer or the Flames making it in the first place.

I almost wish he had accepted it, it would have further shamed Sutter.

by nhlcheapshot on Sep 13, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

The dumb part is if he accepts and Kipper gets hurt, then he IS a #1 goalie. How does he not know that is his closest chance?

You mean… Toskala actually sa… actually sav…. he sav…e…. uhhh… this is hard…. he, yes, prevented (ah HA) harm from coming to Sutter’s rep?… Amazing.

Glory glory Man United, AND the other MU, AAAAnd the Leafs. I think I need a drink now.

He would do fine in Calgary...

The backup there only plays 3 games a season…

If I can't be a good example, then I will just have to serve as a horrible warning...

Oh, wow.

I had always assumed that Toskala could not be any more useless than he is as a goalie, but it seems when it comes to contract negotiations, he actually is.

Leafs fan stuck in England. It is a lot like following the Leafs in Canada, only there is nowhere left open to drown my post-game sorrows...

Praying

That the Sens or the Habs run into injuries, and we get to see him later tin the year. Maybe for the stretch run.

by not norm ullman on Sep 13, 2010 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm, as much as I want the Leafs to win, not sure it’s a good idea to face Toskala too much in the opposing net. Some of our scorers could quickly end up in bonus territory that way, and we don’t have that kind of cap room.

Actually he’s capable of dominant hot streaks of up to a whole game at a time, and you have to know he would pull one on against the Leafs.

This is like the terrible people auditioning on American Idol. For some deluded reason, they think they can make it, despite the obvious lack of talent that is apparent to everyone but them. You also have to wish he had better friends, that would just be honest and say… “ummm, listen, you might be a better goalie than your buddies, but that doesn’t mean you’re a top goalie in the world”

Finally on the Twitter train, @j6events. Follow me, I swear I'll have interesting thoughts soon!

We’re almost completely ignoring the most important fact: Sutter is crazy and is running the Flames into the ground…

Loving the Leafs is like being in love with a drug-addled, gambling addicted prostitute with a heart of gold and a bunch of humanitarian awards from her youth. It’s hard. It hurts. But dammit! I just love them!

His agent needs to learn to hand Toskala things, throwing the contract at him will only elicit a typical Toskalian “seula” response (yes I looked up the word sieve in Finnish last year so I would have something to yell at him when I went to the games)

The fact that Sutter offered Toskala a $1 million contract makes me think the man needs to be admitted into a psychiatric hospital. I think we should offer Jeff Finger and John Mitchell for Rene Bourque and a 1st round pick.

As for Toskala rejecting the offer… LOL!

To quote Stephen Colbert, that’s that craziest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.

Has someone put his agent on suicide watch?

At least Raycroft knows he’s a backup and signs reasonable offers.
