Yay September!
Thank goodness it's September with training camp and the pre-season right around the corner. I can't take any more cap, SPC, or roster speculation. I am going so insane with the lack of any hockey to watch (although thank you TSN for re-playing so many Olympic games and the Bruins/Flyers game 7 lately) that I actually came up with the most insane idea ever to "solve" the Canucks' problem of Luongo's captaincy (co-captains!). Heck I even feel the Leafs Annual hasn't been enough to tide me over, since most articles cover things we've talked about at length here. Nevertheless, in a little over a week I will be heading off for a fine vacation in New York City and when I return, there will be preseason hockey to watch. YAAAAAY

If there’s one NHL player he reminds me of, it’s Corey Perry, and that’s pretty freaking awesome.

All the knocks against Perry, but he is in awesome player.

Biggest knock on Perry is that he’s a freakin’ d-bag, but a skilled freakin’ d-bag.

As much as Burke preaches this “having ten defensemen is great” thing, I’d like to see a solid top four or five and a spot in the bottom pairing where a guy like Lashoff, Aulie or Holzer could fit. Sounds like a broken record I know, but paying all these defensemen now is ridiculous… No need for 6 guys that are capable of playing 25 minutes. Burke sounds like a lunatic when he defends the decision to keep the blue line as is.
Mirtle’s article about Kadri is the best I’ve read so far about him. Kadri gets 20-30 games in the minors this year I think

I couldn’t agree with you more. We need to move a defenseman and Burke knows that too but I think he is just to cocky to admit it.
Mirtle is one of the few Toronto columnists that I love to read; unlike Simmons or Cox. With Grabovski, Bozak, Hanson, Mitchell in the mix for centre I think Kadri will get some AHL time. However I think it’s important that he plays around 35-40 games atleast on the Leafs.

Really? Because I’m pretty sure he was open to moving a defenseman but didn’t find a deal worth it. I’m all for trading a defenseman but not just for the sake of trading. Burke’s not being “cocky” he’s being shrewd.

Changes will happen by next offseason
Regardless of how ridiculous Burke is being with all the d-men, at least we’ll have our defensemen and goalies getting proper AHL time before breaking the NHL.
Our forwards… hell we’ll take them right out of junior or college and put them on our top 2 lines.
20 miles to Legoland!
i'd agree with you
except i felt the same thing going into last season, and the situation has only gotten worse (added Phaneuf and Lebda, with the unexpected emergence of Gunnarsson, and the only subtraction is XLB)
In truth, I suppose a surplus of NHL level defensemen isn’t a bad thing, except for its impact on the cap and ability to address other needs. And on that front, Burke is either overconfident in his scoring forwards, or he’s refusing to admit he’s miscalculated.
Unabashed fan of the surprise 2012 Stanley Cup champs
I think Lebda was the real miscalculation. Presumably he assumed he’d deal Kaberle and needed a #6 D-man to hold the fort until the kids were ready. It’s not a mistake because he didn’t deal Kaberle—it’s a mistake because even if he had, there are still a ton of D-men available. Preissing, Mara, Lilja, McKee, Mottau, etc. would be fine as a #6 D and likely available on a one year deal for less than $1.45MM.
To have your #7-8 D-men making $5MM—even if you send $3.5MM of that to the AHL, as Mirtle appears to think is imminent—is not good.
by The '67 Sound on Sep 2, 2010 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions
Lebda is the worst Burke signing to this day. Even if Burke thought Kaberle was gone, why sign Lebda to 1.4M when there are much better options for cheaper.

Agreed. It’s not like the surplus is gonna hurt the club, but it’s still mind-boggling. As much as it seems like we’re beating it to death, it’s completely warranted. And I keep thinking “yeah Burke will deal two defencemen and bring it all together” but it never happens.
Luke Schenn or Carl Gunnarsson playing bottom pairing is a crime and doesn’t use them to their capacity at all. It’s a waste of cash, and at the same time a waste of skill and development. Blue line is a mess, no matter how much Burke denies it.

The point is also he likely could have gotten someone better than Lebda, cheaper, on a one year deal, today. There was just no need for that signing other than making Dave Poulin happy.

Everything is inter-connected.
We have a surplus of defenceman, the rest of the leaugue doesn’t. If Burke signs Lebda cheap or waits, he drives DOWN the market on the remaining available defenceman. Better to drive it up and make things even more difficult for teams that have a shortage.
The fewer defencman available to other teams, the better, especially when we’re looking secure. If the market for the remaining defenders goes up becuese of the Lebda signing, even better.

Woulda had to say Exelby at the time, and then get proven wrong.
Really all I’m trying to say is that overpaying defencemen to play in the bottom pairing seems dumb, and also playing 20+ min guys in reduced minutes isn’t really getting much value out of them.
