Senators at Leafs

7PM ET: TSN-HD, MapleLeafs.com
10PM ET: NHLN-HD (US)

Last night in the "free tickets because of soda" game the Leafs aptly exemplified the point that you have to pay for goals. Let's put that behind us and move onwards. It's a whole new night and a whole new lineup via Leafs Beat:

Forwards

Kulemin - Bozak - Kessel
MacArthur - Grabovski - D'Amigo
Caputi - Mitchell - Boyce
Rosehill - Foster - Orr

Defen(c/s)e

Beauchemin - Komisarek
Schenn - Blacker
Richmond -Mikus

Goaltenders

Reimer
Scrivens

The Leafs will likely be facing Brian Elliott in net and despite us having our top line the Sens didn't bring many veterans on the trip. Let's pray to Wendel himself for some goals tonight and something better to talk about tomorrow than who screwed up what.

We'll be continuing the video breakdown post due to popular demand, if you have a play you'd like to see broken down remember it and suggest it in the post-game thread.

I'd blame the Leaf forwards

a lot more than I’d credit the Sens D… they took 6 consecutive penalties in the 2nd, most of which were hooking, holding, and crosschecking… I’m not sure that’s a sign of quality D. Taking them against a team with a capable PP (especially 3+ minutes of 5 on 3) would sink any club… they were far more lucky to be playing a shite Leafs club than they were solid out there.

Ok I know I'm in the wrong thread

and I’m late to the party (work and such gets in the way of being an internet laze about who chats about the Leafs all day)…

but I have to point out two things about the PP last night.

Kadri was the one trying to force cross crease passes last night… maybe it worked in the OHL, but he’ll figure out the play to go behind the net… and weak side wingers need to back up into the slot on that play… but they don’t communicate on the PP is my main problem…. it would be VERY easy for the Leafs to have set plays they run on the PP if they just called them out using a variety of codes.

as for Kaberle and Phaneuf shooting, I actually think the problem isn’t just Kaberle not shooting, it’s the frequency with which Phaneuf shoots. Everyone knows Phaneuf leads all blue liners in shot attempts… and the guy hardly ever lets an opportunity to shoot go by without firing in the direction of the net. He needs to take on the ROLE OF A FREAKING CAPTAIN, and acknowledge that it might make sense for him to be the set up man once in a while, and work on getting shots for OTHER players (including Kaberle).

Kaberle actually does hit the net with his shot fairly regularly, and he DID shoot the puck last night…. he fired 2 shots at net, one of which hit the 4×6 area. Phaneuf led all shooters with 8 attempts on goal which is freaking ridiculous. Maybe they need to worry about getting players OTHER than Dion a shot, and then things will open up for him.

I would make Dion the number 3 or 4 option on the PP, rather than the first one, and I’d make that explicitly clear to him. If he isn’t going to pass up the occasional shot, start playing him on the 2nd unit.

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

- Sir Winston Churchill

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

by Steve Burtch on Sep 22, 2010 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

Kaberle

was 24th in the NHL amongst D men for shots on goal last season (158)… he isn’t afraid of shooting the puck… this is a myth that needs to die… he was only 38th in missed shots though (61), so he’s far more efficient than some of the guys higher up the list in terms of shot attempts.

Dion Phaneuf and Luke Schenn (and Stempniak and White last year) were huge black holes that tended to have a lot of their shots blocked last year… Kaberle isn’t so much the problem as I’d argue that other Leafs seem to need to work on getting their shot on net more accurately… or shoot less.

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

- Sir Winston Churchill

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

by Steve Burtch on Sep 22, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe its just part of what he does but Kabby made way to many fake shots last night, the announcer couldn’t even muster the energy to get excited for them anymore. Kabby needed to open up on the net a bit so people wouldn’t key entirely on Dion at the point.

Again

that’s way more a function of Phaneuf than it is Kaberle… It’s like Kaberle’s been told to feed Phaneuf non stop rather than take the occasional shot himself to keep the opposition honest. Part of me thinks that may be Phaneuf’s doing, but I don’t picture Kaberle being the most assertive soul on the ice. If Phaneuf tells him to pass him the puck for one timers he’s probably fine with doing that…

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

- Sir Winston Churchill

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
