Leaf Lovin' Since '92

Hello fellow Leaf fans!

I joined PPP about a month ago, and within a week of joining I forgot my password and was too embarrassed to make a new account. [Editor's Note: If you forget your password or want to change your username e-mail me and I will fixt it. Do not make a new account. Thanks] After another month of lurking on the site and trying to guess my password, I managed to get back into my account,  and followed this up by re-establishing my noob blogger ways by commenting on the wrong fanpost... typical of me.

Anyways, I'm hoping to be frequenting these parts now that I've had all my vacation time burned and my mental lapses out of the way.  I figure if I hope to contribute anything to this community I should give a brief summary of me and my Leaf loving ways. If I make any mistakes along the ways, please let me know as I hope to establish myself as less of an idiot than I already have!

My irrational love for the blue and white must have started the day I was born.  I was immediately wrapped in a leaf blanket and grew up with a large majority of my possessions covered in various leaf logos.  My dad loved the Leafs in the 90s and I remember going to games at the Gardens and ACC as some of the best time i have ever spent with him, so naturally the Leafs were the only team I had ever cared for.

On my 4th birthday i received a Sega Genesis as well as a copy of NHL 96, and by the time I was 8 I was ready to take my shot at making it to the NHL by signing up to start playing hockey, but I quickly buried that dream as I absolutely hated falling all over the ice. Street hockey was more my game anyways.  I remember turning 10 though, and I laid my eyes on the new Markham Waxers jerseys for the first time....they were these super cool leaf replicas and I remember telling myself the I need to would find a way to make the Waxers as fast as possible, and by the age of 12, I had. Our team sucked, and I was probably the worst player in the league, but I had a Leaf look-a-like jersey with my name sewn onto the back, so I was satisfied. I remember when we got our jerseys for the first game and I begged for number 13, but I couldn't get it, so I ended up taking the number 12, which was as close as I could get. 12 is still my favorite number to this day.

Each year the leafs made the playoffs, my love for the team grew, and my room was completely decked out with posters of my favorite players of all time, Mats Sundin and Tie Domi. My mom is originally from Montreal, so her brothers always gave me such a hard time for being a Leaf fan, but nothing made me feel better as a little kid than calling my uncles every time our beloved leafs beat the habs.

When the lockout came around I was 14 I believe, so I didn't really know what to do with myself.  I took my hockey more seriously and became the captain of the Waxers.  A blue and white jersey with the C on it... I remember having so much pride that I was just like Mats Sundin, minus any sort of skill.

After the lockout I suffered as all of you have, watching my team fall from grace and seemingly cement themselves into what seemed to be an eternity of mediocrity. I will skip those years, as I'm sure they have been discussed enough on this site.

Anyways, over the past few months with the Kaberle saga and the hope for more groundbreaking news, I took my passion to the Internet, searching the net for any insiders news or new rumors to read about, so naturally I stumbled upon PPP, which I have lingered on ever since. Now that I myself am a member i look forward to visiting here more often and discussing whatever may come with the rest of you.

Here's to a winning season!

Cheers.

As someone born in ’91 and into a similar household filled with love for the Toronto Maple Leafs, I agree wholeheartedly. I was born 19 years ago as of September 13th and the process of turning me into a Leaf fan started right away, highlighted by my dad having me watch the ’93 playoffs right beside him (though I understood almost nothing, I still cheered when my dad did and knew that the blue and white Maple Leaf represented everything Canadian.)

Started playing hockey at 7 years old, started watching hockey frequently at about the same age, and my passion for the Leafs grew to the pretty insane levels that it’s at now in the time between. The 5 years of mediocrity dampens the spirits of many people our age and they stop cheering, but sticking around through it all will make it so much sweeter when we’re competitive.

Hopefully it’s this year.

I was born a few years later, and I started loving the Leafs right from the start too. My dad tells me stories of my baby self clapping my hands and bouncing on the sofa every time the Leafs scored, which obviously happened a lot more often than it does know.
My favourites were McCabe and Sundin, until the former decided to score on our net and the latter left the team. Since then, it’s been Kabbie all the way.
I’m an armchair athlete, but I remember being the only girl playing hockey with the guys in gym class when we got to choose what sport we wanted to play. I was always on defence, and my partner and I would nickname people on our team after Leafs, depending on the position they were playing (it was useful when we were calling for a pass and no one on the other team knew which player was who)
Yes, I also enjoy watching the Pens, and my overall favourite player isn’t a Leaf, but that doesn’t stop me from cheering till my throat hurts every Leaf game :D

I remember playing street hockey with my friends and giving ourselves nicknames after Leaf players. I was always Wendel Clark, even long after he left the team. When I played goalie, I was Curtis Joseph.

I miss the good ’ol days.

I was born in 1990, and my mom said that while she was pregnant she had the urge to watch leafs games, and that I would kick and punch every time the leafs would score. Then, I really got into hockey when I was about 6. When they dealt Doug Gilmour my heart was broken and I vowed never to watch hcokey again, but I did again, starting in the 98/99 season. My favorite player was Mats, and I BEGGED my parents for a Mats jersey when I was about to turn 9, I wasnt expecting to get it, but I did, and it wasnt one of those cheap-ass ones, it was a TRUE AUTHENTIC leafs jersey that my skating coach ultimately got for me, because she worked at the Hockey Hall of Fame as well which was wicked awesome! I still have it actually! Even during the leafs horrible years I stuck by them, and now I’m writing my own book on the leafs that I hope one day to get published, and I aim to make it a book that will make leafsnation members proud, unlike the dribble that was Leafs AbomiNation. Sorry for my ranting, but eh it came out :)

Oh, you kids are so cute! ;)

Hey, Leafs love is age-irrelevant. It always amazes me how different players from different generations have captured our imaginations and made the Leafs such an integral part of our lives. From Barilko to Sittler to Wendel, Dougie, Mats and (hopefully) Dion and co. We all have special stories to tell that helped shape our youth and rooted our love for blue & white, regardless of age. It’s great how so few other fan-bases can say the same thing.

You grandkids are so cute. I went to my first Leafs game in 1966. We were Davie Keon and Johnnie Bower in road hockey. You could even play pond hockey in Rexdale in them thar days. When I first played organized hockey I wore #3 , one of the shitty Leafs numbers (befitting of my abilities as a hockey player I guess) so became a Marcel Pronovost fan. So I have those vague memories of a Leafs Stanley Cup win that were imprinted early enough that they will likely last well into the Alzheimers than knocks on my door.

Since his name is Death_By_Leafs I figured he wouldn’t be opposed. Seems like a reasonable proposition to me.

Welcome

Thanks for joining. Glad you found your password. Waxers eh? Trying to think if I knew anyone on those teams but I think you’d be a couple of years younger.
