Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick Brad Ross made his presence felt throughout the game. He picked up six minor penalties, a fighting major, 10-minute misconduct and game misconduct.
Terry Doyle saw some real truculence from Brad Ross tonight.

I think that’s the definition of “truculence” that we have been looking for.

Set the tone for the season
Kinda reminds of how (on TV sitcoms especially) that on your first day in prison, you’re supposed to find the biggest toughest guy and beat the shit out of him so nobody messes with you.
Set. The. Tone.
20 miles to Legoland!
There’s a part of me that thinks that’s excessive and he needs to tone it down if he’s going to get anywhere.
Mostly though, I just think ‘Fuck Yeah’.

Did the rookie tourney start today? What game is this from.
Also: badass.
Bobby Ryan...can he be acquired?
blurr1974: No.
I think it was a pre-season WHL game.
I think it was a pre-season WHL game.
Preseason. And the kid walks away with like 27 PIM.
SET THE TONE.

Are you guys serious? You like a guy who gets 6 minor penalties… let me repeat… 6 minor penalties before being ejected? Heck no! I wouldn’t want a player like that on my team. Although, at least the Leafs have had the best PK unit in the NHL every year since the lockout, they can deal with it… oh wait. It’s been said several times already here, 27 penalty minutes in a game “sets the tone.” Yeah, I bet 12 minutes of hacking, slashing, tripping, roughing, or whatever else Brad Ross was doing sets the tone: a tone the other team interprets as “We’re gonna score a shitload of powerplay goals”. Yeah, truculence is great. The kind of truculence that doesn’t get you 27 minutes in penalties in a single game.

After reading the article:
Further to my previous post: Brad Ross was tossed in the second period. At the second intermission the Portland Winterhawks (Ross’ team) were down 5-2. After Ross was ejected they came back to win in overtime 6-5. So with Brad Ross in the game, the Winterhawks were repeatedly shorthanded and losing badly, he gets tossed, without him they suddenly start scoring goals and pull off a miraculous come-from-behind win. Yet you guys are singing his praises for racking up penalty after penalty while his team got dug into a hole? I really don’t understand this.
by CanadianMaple09 on Sep 5, 2010 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions
Its the preseason. Now if hes doing this while Portland is down the stretch trying to win the WHL then its a problem. But right now Im sure hes just doing everything to “set the tone” like it has been said.
Set the tone
And like I brought up before, what tone is that? The tone that the team will be a bunch of goons and spend most of the game shorthanded? The tone that undisciplined play is a great idea? The tone that you can come from behind 5-2 going into the third period and win on a regular basis? No, that’s not the tone that should be set. If Brad Ross wants to set a tone, he should do it by putting the puck in the net or regularly making clean hits. 6 minor penalties in less than 2 full periods played doesn’t set any tone that’s worthy of being replicated by the team.
by CanadianMaple09 on Sep 5, 2010 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions
He’s just setting the tone that he’s not going to take any shit this year with the hopes that teams will interpret it as a message to back off and give him some space
Also, it’s pre-season. He’s still going to put up some PIMs in the regular season, but he’s working out the kinks now. I wouldn’t expect to see this kind of performance too much
Bobby Ryan...can he be acquired?
blurr1974: No.

Yeah I get the part about setting the tone for “not going to take any shit this year”. That’s a worthy endeavour. But I don’t see how 6 minor penalties accomplishes that. If a guy takes a cheap shot at one of your players, stand up for your teammate and fight him, don’t go out the next shift and slash, trip, elbow, or high stick him. I haven’t been able to track down the gamesheet but I’d guess that his fighting major, the 10 minute misconduct, and the game misconduct were the last three penalties he was assessed. If that’s the case, he was involved in a whole bunch of unecessary penalties before that that don’t really prove to the other team you won’t take any shit, they prove that you’re undisciplined and easy to exploit whenever they want a powerplay.

There’s another review of the game here, seems to back up CM09’s concerns.
I can see already that Brad Ross is going to be the polarizing player for arguments among Winterhawks fans this year.
We want truculent, not Ryan Hollweg. Crazy is okay, calculating is even better, and stupid is the worst.
Still, as long as it’s not a meaningful game… they won, he didn’t get suspended, no harm done, except to the other team I suppose.
Once you have a reputation as a trouble maker though it’s kinda hard to shake that off so refs will likely be watchimg Brad Ross a little closer now.
God I can’t wait for the Leafs season to start.

Tie Domi
Was in the shoot out during the PRE SEASON. This game Is exactly the setting for shit like this. I love that he got so
many penalties. It really does send a message. It’s don’t fuck with me and I will back it up.
by jmobes on Sep 6, 2010 2:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It also sends a clear message to the refs… watch this guy closely, and anything he does that’s borderline for the rest of the season is going to be called. I stick to my point, if you want to “set the tone” or “send a message”, make some solid, clean hits, maybe fight the other team’s tough guy and rough him up a couple of times. 6 minor penalties accomplishes nothing.

I’m with you on this one, CM. I do think, however, that a lot of people here are being somewhat facetious about the whole thing in the absence of anything else to cheer about at the moment. Just playin’, yo.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
Truculence!
This is the kind of crazy I loved watching in the IHL and ECHL when they were in town many years ago. I think he’ll calm down a little bit by the time he’s a serious contender to make the Leafs roster in a few years.
Let’s take it for what it is — the usual uptick in PIMs due to it being preseason.

six minor penalties, a fighting major, 10-minute misconduct and game misconduct.
If Keith Acton coached the PK , the Winterhawks would have been down 11-2 by the time Ross got ejected.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
It’s a shame this guy grew up a habs fan. By the time his contract expires, he’ll probably go sign with the habs and tell the press about how it’s been a lifelong dream for him. Same goes for Kadri too. It would be real nice to bring in some players that actually grew up rooting for the Leafs and that REALLY want to play here.
right, because that happens all the time.
How many players out there do you think grew up habs or leaf fans? I mean Crosby was a Habs fan growing up and he never went there, Nash was a Leafs fan, etc etc etc
I mean look how those players jumped ship to their boyhood dream teams…oh wait

Sorry, but that's just silly.
Do you know how many NHL players grew up in the GTA, or Ontario at least as Leaf fans before they got drafted? Probably tonnes. In his interview, Seguin said he probably had a pair of Leaf underwear on during the interview (probably just for effect, but I think you get the idea).

My friends are at this tournament. I couldn’t make it. Plus its a few days and hotel and food add up fast.
I love Ross, he’s always in beastmode.

Ross also drew three penalties so added to the six minors I would guess part of the problem is that the refs are in pre-season as well.
