Leafs Acquire Fabian Brunnstrom
The Leafs have traded Mikhail Stefanovich, future Dynamo Minsk second liner and ECHL pro, for Dallas' AHL property Fabian Brunnstrom.
Hard to say anyone loses this trade; Stefanovich couldn't crack the Marlies and Brunnstrom isn't taking a regular NHL shift but it lets us dig up old blog posts.

Brunnstrom has 19 goals and 40 points in 99 NHL games. He has a $675K cap hit and will be an RFA this summer. Welcome aboard Arvedson 2.0.

Okay, fine, but what’s the point?
You get what looks like a career AHL-er for a guy who couldn’t make the AHL, supposedly. Really, though, Stefanovich wasn’t a bad player, in his second last year with the Ramparts he had 76 pts in 56 games played. There was always a chance he could have come back.
Why are we in the business of doing the Stars favours? Is Burke buttering other GM’s up so he can sucker them with a big trade later?

yeah, something’s wrong with him right now, ‘cause he’s not exactly tearing it up at the super-elite-level KHL either.
still, i know Burke never drafted him, but it’s another pick gone, just like didomenico. it seems Burke doesn’t have much of an appetite for long-term project players.

Burke’s still focused on his “accelerated rebuild” project, which, unless he signs a game breaking forward like Richards this summer, isn’t going to work.
Burke’s dealt away a shit-ton of picks and prospects in order to shortcut his way into a rebuild. this is just part of the pattern, one that has me worried.

Paradis sucks
Didominico was a 3rd line grinder if everything went perfect together

Meh
I don’t think Stefanovich blows… he’s a very talented player. He also was very frustrated with his lack of playing time, and I’m not sure I blame him much… but being difficult with coaches is a quick way to see yourself out of a league when they control your career.
I don’t think Paradis sucks either… and DiDomenico was fine until he broke his leg.
I do think trading 3 for 1 to get Versteeg is ok, but I still miss Stalberg a bit … I’ll probably miss Stefanovich too, but I’m willing to concede neither one is going to be the key to the playoffs anytime soon.

my point is, we won’t see the lack of fruits as a result of Burke’s labour for many years.
meaning, a few years from now, when Burke’s been fired, and we’re waiting for a bunch of prospects to be hitting their peak talent level, they won’t be around, because Burke dealt them all away.
you’re dismissing Stefanovich as a head case. clearly, he’s having some issues if he can only pot one in the KHL. But so what? He’s friggin’ 21! Who’s to say what Paradis and Dido turn into? Hell, even Stalberg may surprise us.
yes, the odds of getting NHL level players even from the 1st round is not guaranteed and drops off precipitously in every round after that.
but if you give away two 1sts, a 2nd, a 4th, a 5th, Paradis, Didomenico, Stalberg, and Stefanovich, well, then in a few years you’re practically guaranteed to be short of talent coming up from the minors.
Fire. Wilson. Now. Anger is more useful than despair.
by Peter de Chatham on Jan 13, 2011 7:36 PM EST up reply actions
well
to be fair on the loss of Stalberg, the player you got in return was actually younger (Versteeg), so that isn’t really a loss of a young player per se.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
by Steve Burtch on Jan 13, 2011 7:37 PM EST up reply actions
sure, fair enough, Stalberg’s older. But two other guys went with him.
and this is to head off any “concussion case” labels against Stalberg – I can counter that with Versteeg being a “repeated back injury” case.
Burke is dealing too much away, I fear. And if he wants to sign an elite forward, he’s not done yet.
Fire. Wilson. Now. Anger is more useful than despair.
by Peter de Chatham on Jan 13, 2011 7:42 PM EST up reply actions
I wasn't going to mention Stalberg's concussions
but we could mention DiDo’s broken femur and complete lack of production at the AHL level.
Paradis isn’t even a point per game player as an overager in the Q… so yeah… he doesn’t “suck” … even Joel Champagne is well above him in the scoring race, and we didn’t bother to sign Champagne…
but yeah… we have a lot of young players in the system, and at least we know Brunnstrom and Versteeg can score on NHL goalies… I don’t think we’ve seen much from the others to indicate that.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

by Steve Burtch on Jan 13, 2011 7:44 PM EST up reply actions
So far Burke's trades:
Tlusty (21) for Paradis (18)… Burke actually gets younger by trading one 1st rounder for another.
He then packages up Paradis, and DiDomenico (20) along with Stalberg (24) for Versteeg (also 24 but younger than Stalberg)
So overall you lost a 21 year old and a 24 year old with NHL experience, to get a player who is a younger 24 that has a Stanley Cup ring, finished 2nd in Calder trophy voting, and has two seasons over 50 points in only 2 years in the NHL.
He’s got two 20 goal seasons, and he’s 24. The other guys have combined to produce 29 goals and 29 assists in 194 games. Versteeg has produced 56 goals and 76 assists in 211 NHL regular seasons games, and another 10 goals and 16 assists in 39 playoff games… don’t forget that ring!
DiDomenico is playing in the ECHL, and still has no goals as a pro hockey player.
As for the Kessel deal… it’s done, and we’ve got our 35+ goal scorer. He might be overpaid but we’ll survive.
Sjostrom (27), Phaneuf (25) and Aulie (21) for Stajan (27), Hagman (31), Mayers (36), and Toskala (33)?
Not sure how that’s not an example of getting both younger and better.
I mean realistically you’re venting about the Kessel and Versteeg trades here.

I’ll be posting it later this week, maybe even tonight, but according to my updated trade tracker, in his tenure here Burke has received more draft picks in trades then he’s moved out. He’s also brought in more prospects than he’s moved out. You’re misinformed.
TOMAS KABERLE: LEAF FOR LIFE
Yeah
the idea that he’s trading youth for older players is amazingly misleading… he’s made the team a LOT younger.
He’s made some mistakes with UFAs for the NHL team, but he’s also signed Bozak, Mueller, Gustavsson, Rynnas, Irwin, Crabb, Gysbers, and Scrivens… I’m fine with how he’s adding to our prospect pool generally speaking.

As one of the youngest teams in the league, long-term prospects aren’t likely to get a slot even if they play well. It’s fair to say these prospects aren’t “elite talent” that should be on the first line, so how likely are they to supplant Bozak, MGK or Kessel? It’s not like any of those players are really old, and Stefo or DiDo are going to knock them out of a slot in 4 years (when the aforementioned players are still under 30).
The experiment failed: Get rid of the trapezoid.
Burke's always looking to do favours
That he hopes will pay off long-term. We do lots of trades with Anaheim because Burke is best buds with most of those guys over there. Relationships matter in the GM world.

by nhlcheapshot on Jan 13, 2011 6:42 PM EST up reply actions
That being said, some of his relationships won’t pay off for another 5-10 years, and may not help the Leafs specifically. But GMs remember how they’re treated by other GMs.

Yep. If Burke wanted to lay into them, he could’ve tried to take Brunnstrom with a pick, or given an older player back. That this is a 1-for-1 trade that provides dallas with the lesser known quality suggests that there was a little “sure I can do that for ya…” going on.
The experiment failed: Get rid of the trapezoid.
I’m going to order a Brunnstrom Marlies jersey… then strut down the street.
Contains the correct levels of Truculence....
Meh
I don’t expect Brunnstrom to ever play for the Leafs unless there are a crapload of injuries but we are at least getting some help for the Marlies in exchange for a guy who will most likely never play in North America again, so I can’t complain.
I would have been very excited about this trade two years ago.
I never expected
Joey Crabb to play on a line with Phil Kessel. So anything positive that we get from Brunnstrom is top hats.
Smoke Weed Every Day.
Ugh
"Our coaches down there said he’s been their best player for awhile now," said Stars’ general manager Joe Nieuwendyk. "He’s a big, strong kid with top-six skill level, but he wasn’t going to get that chance in our organization with James Neal and Jamie Benn playing ahead of him. It’s a very good deal Toronto. Maybe a fresh start is what he needs."
I don’t like when the opposing GM we just made a trade with calls it a good deal for Toronto… something doesn’t smell right about that.

I clearly remember one of Lebda’s giveaways clearly. It was on the PP, mishandling the puck and falling down handing the opposing penalty kill a breakaway (I seem to recall that the goalie bailed him out). I’m not actually making any particular generalization since I haven’t watched a whole lot of games, but there are giveaways and then there are giveaways that give the opponents a “breakaway from their own blue line”. Even if you think all giveaways are the same, the most egregious ones will stand out in the minds of fans.
I’d like to claim that every single one of Lebda’s giveaways was like that, and all of Schenn and Beauchemin’s were firing the puck in for a line change because while probably untrue, piling on Lebda is still a great way to get recs.
President of the Emotional Hedging club.
I think he was meant to be a replacement for Kaberle, but when that didn’t fall through we were stuck with him. With a #7 dmen you want him to be defensively responsible and not a liability. Lebda is more offensive to fufill this role

That has nothing to do with luck…
that means he doesn’t know how to defend, gives up odd man rushes, thus resulting in harder saves for the goalie, and thus the PDO

Yea, seems like things go poorly for him and he’s not getting the ice time to bring his numbers back to normal. But again, it’s easy to scapegoat, and fun too!

He has had bad luck, and there is a lot of confirmation bias going on, but I still needs me a scapegoat.

meh
I think the crappy work of the Kessel-Bozak-Versteeg line was a large part of our issues to start the year. Komisarek has been HORRIBLE for what we’re paying him.
Gustavsson and Giguere have been below average.

You don’t like piling on?
Some might consider double digit posts to make your point ‘piling on’.

He’s a lot bigger than I thought. I always figured he was a small, skill guy. He’s got some beef to him though. Who knows.

No
he’s definitely not a tiny kid… he’s another one of our many shots at getting a bit of a sizeable player for our top 6.

Dude had 17 goals in 55 games right off the hop. There’s potential there. Size, good speed, good shot, good hands, creative. So things went bad with Dallas, he’ll get a new start here.
Great deal.

He’s an AHLer. Don’t get your hopes up. Dallas has been waiting 2 years for him to discover some of that “potential”.

I think both Stars and Leafs fans feel like they are on this gameshow with this trade...
