Capitals at Leafs: More chances for Don Cherry to yell about Russians
* I swear there are no Mike Komisarek jokes in this post *
The Washington Capitals return to the Air Canada Centre tonight, looking to avenge a crippling meltdown and subsequent SO loss on December 6th. In that game, the Leafs overcame a three goal third period deficit, mostly on the back of center Mikhail Grabovski. The young Belarusian has scored 10 points in nine career games against the Caps, and he'll be the player Washington will look to neutralize tonight. Expect the Leafs to respond in a similar fashion, as Luke Schenn was able to hold Alex Ovechkin in check last time and should get the call again.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere will get the nod for the Leafs in net. Braden Holtby was first off the ice this morning, so he's the Caps starter in all likelihood.
Injuries and lines after the jump...
Injuries:
TOR - Colton Orr, Fredrik Sjostrom
WAS - Alex Semin, Michael Neuvirth, maybe some other people
Lines:
Mac - Grabbo - Kule
Crabb - Bozak - Phil
Army - Boyce - Steeg
Rosie - Brent - The Terminator
Beauch - Dion
Kabs - OLAS
Gunnar - Komi

Good to see goalies with lower sv% than ours playing against the Leafs.

He had one last game
2 in a row? not likely.
He made 24 saves on 25 shots, and won 2-1 over the Islanders. His 4 starts have come against the Isles, Devils, Buffalo and Philadelphia, and he’s got a 2-1-1 record in them.
He got credited with a win against Boston, and a loss against Atlanta, despite playing only 10:09 against the Bruins and having to make 4 saves, and 9:07 against Atlanta where he gave up 3 goals on 5 shots… not exactly stellar.

Similar thoughts
on Danny Richmond and Brennan… Richmond has been playing pro hockey since 2004-05, and he’s played 49 NHL games between Carolina and Chicago… but he’s only accumulated 3 assists to go with 75 penalty minutes.
Brennan is 3 years removed from his senior season at BC in the NCAA, and he’s produced all of 5 goals and 16 assists in 174 AHL games… to go along with 246 penalty minutes.

That kid that ran track for
Canada? yeah he’s not unique… they have a whole segment of students that are in the building because they compete at the provincial or national level in a variety of other sports.
They aren’t allowed to play the sport they “specialize” in by the OFSSA rules, so they tend to pick sports that OFSSA doesn’t even run regular events for… i.e. biatholon, downhill skiing, etc.

Yeah they’ve got more than enough athletes.

National team athletes are allowed to run track at OFSAA. Bill Stephens is the track coach at Birchmount, right? And the track club is Phoenix, I believe.

They are hurting right now
Which is why they win games 2-1 over the Isles… and despite this fact, the MSM like to blather about how they don’t score enough.

which is kinda fair
considering they still have Ovechkin, Backstrom, Laich, Green, Knuble, Carlson…

but realistically?
I don’t really think of the Caps as having more offensive weapons right now than the Leafs considering their injuries.

Ovechkin
has 16 goals and 48 points in 48 games.
Backstrom has 12 goals and 44 points in 48 games.
then they’ve got Laich at 9 goals and 27 points, Green’s at 21 points, and Carlson and Knuble are at 20 points.
NOT intimidated.

sorry if already posted
nabokov refusing to report to islanders:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-islanders-nabokov
TOMAS KABERLE: LEAF FOR LIFE
Several hours after claiming him, Islanders general manager Garth Snow said he hadn’t been told Nabokov wouldn’t report and was waiting for him to return a call.
Don’t hold your breath on that call-back, Garth. Hilarious.
What should Snow do now? I say keep him and don’t waiver (pun intended) on his stance that Nabby is now an Islander.
Suspend if you need the roster spot, or if you need someone more expensive to stay above the floor, but don’t grant him a release.
Meehan apparently said yesterday that his client would show up wherever he got claimed, so I say fuck Nabokov. Let him wait until July 1st and see if anyone wants to hire him then.
