Ouch! My Groin!
Who: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Colorado Avalanche
What: Game #4 of the Regular Season. Leafs 3-0-0 (6), Avs 4-1-0 (8)
Where: Air Canada Centre in Toronto Canada
When: TV - 7:00pm on RSNO, Versus (US). Radio - AM640 Toronto
The Leafs will look to continue their early season success against the uglier-than-Yeti boys from Denver. Take the jump for some thoughts on the matchup and the projected rosters.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere and his surgically repaired groin make a visit to the ACC tonight. The Avalanche are coming off a big shootout win over the Habs on Saturday, and have scored an impressive 17 goals through their first five games. I caught a bit of the Avs-Habs showdown and I wasn't really impressed by Colorado. Mostly, Carey Price stunk up the joint. One thing the Leafs do need to be concerned about is the penalty kill. Colorado has six powerplay goals so far and their top-six is fairly talented. Matt Duchene and future Leaf Paul Stastny provide one of the best one-two punches at center in the NHL, and they're flanked by some decent goal scorers. David Jones and Milan Hejduk will need to be watched closely by the Leafs defense.
On the other hand, the Leafs have Phil Kessel.
Toronto
MacArthur - Grabovski - Kulemin
Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
Frattin - Lombardi - Armstrong
Dupuis - Steckel - Brown
Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Liles - Schenn
Franson - Komisarek
Reimer
Colorado
Lidstrom - Duchene - Hejduk
Jones - Stastny - Kobasew
Landeskog - O'Reilly - Winnik
McLeod - McClement - Galiardi
Hejda - Johnson
Quincey - O'Brien
Wilson - O'Byrne
Giguere

I had something really clever to say here. But I forgot.
I’ve noticed that a lot of people comment on and rec the caricatures in the threads when I post them, much more so than on the actual Fanshot itself. I actually intend the comments with the caricatures as a kind of news flash to get people who comment on the Game Preview and GDT threads but don’t travel to the Fanshot section that the newest one is out. Should I even bother making a Fanshot for these, or would they work better just as comments in the Game Previews or GDT’s?

Do both. You don’t get as many recs because the Fanshots aren’t a major thoroughfare like the GDT is; but the GDT is just that, the middle of the street. Not the best place to store art. I look forward to seeing the line of caricatures down the right side, and I’ll click on the ‘shot if I didn’t see the latest one in the GDT, which will often happen.

Really it all started when some MHH members started making unfounded claims that the Landeskog line would do some damage against the Lombardi line. We called them on it, couldn’t get an answer beyond “they’ve been amaaaazing for 5 straight games now”, and so we started the logical next step of sarcastic mocking.
Fair enough. I do think you all may be underestimating that line. They’ve given fits to every team we’ve played so far. But we’ll see what happens tonight. The Leafs may have them figured out.

- Boston: Mostly Seguin and Kelly. A little PK time for Winnik and Landeskog, plus a little at the end had them against a top line. http://www.timeonice.com/default.html?GameNumber=20025&submit=Go
- Montreal: Diaz, Kostitsyn, Desharnais, and a little against Gorges and Pacioretti. http://www.timeonice.com/default.html?GameNumber=20050&submit=Go
- Ottawa: Da Costa, Greening, a touch of Alfredsson. Maybe two to three total shifts against Spezza. http://www.timeonice.com/default.html?GameNumber=20041&submit=Go
- Columbus – Vermette, Atkinson (recently sent down), and Brassard. At the 13 minute mark, you can see they’ve got a short shift against Nash/Carter/Prospal. Given that Columbus had last change, I’d bet that they were pulled off the ice to avoid being played against Columbus’ top line, though they do a full shift at 26 and 29, and score against Nash at 59. http://www.timeonice.com/default.html?GameNumber=20034&submit=Go
These aren’t even stats – the truth is, they haven’t been spending much time facing the top lines of other teams. At all.
One of the things I did notice, though, was that they scored against Nash and Spezza while they happened to be on the ice together. I bet that’s where this mistaken information is coming from.

And like I said in the thread over at MHH, I’m not doubting that Landeskog will be a very good player in the future. Hell, I also said I bet that he’ll score tonight, since all NHL rookies score a goal the first time they face Toronto. But my point regarding the “3rd vs 3rd” discussion was that some of the members at MHH would be foolish to (1) hold Landeskog et al up like the 2nd coming after 5 games and (2) dismiss the defensive and shutdown abilities of Toronto’s 3rd line so quickly.
I enjoy watching the Avs 3rd line and wish them continued success in the future.

To be fair, the lines are all scoring equally. It’s a big stretch, I know, to call them all first lines. (I’d argue none of them are a true first line as the team is sorely lacking in top-tier wingers. I mean, Kobasew on the first line? lololol) But they all have offensive weapons that have been giving the Avs wins lately.

It’s kinda like what we have. Our top six is really/has really been more of a 2A/2B arrangement. On one side, Kessel is the best player on the team, but the MGK line has altogether been the best unit.

The elders murmured assent.
“Now, what affects it?”
“Ah!” said old Yacob.
“This,” said the doctor, answering his own question. “Those queer things that are called the eyes, and which exist to make an agreeable depression in the face, are diseased, in the case of Nunez, in such a way as to affect his brain. They are greatly distended, he has eyelashes, and his eyelids move, and consequently his brain is in a state of constant irritation and distraction.”
“Yes?” said old Yacob. “Yes?”
“And I think I may say with reasonable certainty that, in order to cure him complete, all that we need to do is a simple and easy surgical operation—namely, to remove these irritant bodies.”
“And then he will be sane?”
“Then he will be perfectly sane, and a quite admirable citizen.”

I like you and some other Caps folks and I really like your team but the whining about supposed holes in your roster last year got to me. “Oh woe is me, we only have Backstrom and Laich up the middle!”

Laich isn’t a second-line center on a Cup contending team, certainly not in the East. There were holes in the lineup. There are holes in the lineup. But there are holes in everyone’s lineup, and more of ’em on most teams than on the Caps.
Unquestionably this team’s failures have stemmed from more than just a lack of the “right” personnel, but to imply that fans shouldn’t analyze a team’s problems and desire upgrades as possible solutions is… odd.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’s a tone thing. Hard to explain unless you’re a fan of a team that doesn’t feature three guys who regularly go over PPG.
The Caps lineup is ridiculously stacked and asking for more talent is damn near impossible in a salary cap world… unless you can convince the best goalie in the league to sign for peanuts and fleece a crap team out of a lottery pick.

I have some faith in Galiardi in the long run but never more than a 40 point player. The only guys you have in your bottom 6 I can see really leaving it are O’Reilly, Landeskog, and Stoa (though he is not looking likely anymore).
Confused why people think Aulie is better than Gunnarson. Please ask me to explain

Stoa (though he is not looking likely anymore).
Understatement of the year. Stoa is done, at least with the Avs. He has no idea that he is 6’3" and 200 lbs. Until he figures that out, he will be an AHLer. We have a guy named Mark Olver who is a feisty little bastard with some serious skill. The problem is he’s only 5’10", 170. If ever there was a perfect opportunity for body switching, that’s it. If Olver had Stoa’s size, he’d be a top power forward in this league. Alas, he’ll be lucky to make it into the NHL. It’s happened with small guys, so who knows. Just such a shame about Stoa.

We’ll see how accurate that is in the long run. Pronman was really hot on that fact, but I wonder if some of it may have just been a hate on. Other scout’s liked him way more than that. If he does turn out to be very limited then Pronman will be a genius, but I am not so sure. Frankly if he turns into a 2nd/3rd line winger, Pronman’s predraft ranking of him is still ridiculous.

I’d say we’re “good” enough that being in the weak East would make it unsurprising to slip into one of the last playoff spots. Of course, the spots right after them would be similarly unsurprising.

I think Grabbo’s the only “old” guy I’d sell as part of a firesale (since no one would want Komi and I want to keep Dion). I think more important would be putting together packages for a top forward and UFA for a top D.

Grabbo screams high trade value to me. He was absolutely terrific last year, but that may partially be attributable to chemistry, he’s 27, and due for a pretty big payday if he continues to do well this year. Obviously this assumes his trade value is decent and he isn’t willing to take a “hometown discount”, if that’s an actual thing.
Oh, I'm sorry, just one moment. Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?

I’m not going to get into it now but I have beef with the peaking at 25 thing.
Not the concept that players get worse after a certain age, but the actual data and grouping collected isn’t representative for all players.

I hear ya. BTN’s chart incorporates players in other professional leagues, so it may not be strictly representative of those who are consistently NHL quality (though I’m not sure how you would look exclusively at those players, since injury and opportunity are such huge factors).
I still think this is important data, since I still encounter people who believe that most NHL players peak at 27-30. This just isn’t reasonable.
Which players peak when becomes the interesting question. There’s also the issue of how you build your team: do you assume that the 23-year-old will improve to achieve an unknown potential, or do you bet on the 27-year-old only regressing a bit from a known high?
Here’s my take-home opinion on this: according to the data I have, Grabovski has probably peaked already. I would welcome evidence that suggests he is a type of player that peaks later.
Oh, I'm sorry, just one moment. Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?
He may well have peaked, but I don’t think the decline is sharp enough that we have to trade him. IMO he’ll be a useful and skilled player for another contract (3-5 years).
Shipping off good players for lottary tickets isn’t really the way I hope we’re building this team anymore.
No more moral victories, no more excuses. Put up or shut up.

What complicates the picture is the fact that he’s a UFA after this year and due for a very large raise if he keeps up the kind of production that will make us want to keep him. He may well be very productive for a few more years, but the price may be increasingly disproportionate.
I don’t know how much he wants; I don’t know how much we can get for him. Those factors could completely reverse my opinion that he’s a valuable trade asset right now. If the return is going to be a late 1st and he’d willing to sign for $4.5M per for 4 years, I’m all for keeping him.
I should say that I agree that I don’t want “lottery tickets”, but rather controllable younger assets.
Oh, I'm sorry, just one moment. Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?
No because we’re going to trade out first at the deadline for a run for the 8th position.

Here are your top players by PPG last year
First off note that # 1,3,6 and 8 are gone and 3 and 8 were gone during the year.
So MacArthur’s 0.76, Grabovski’s 0.72, and Kulemin’s 0.70 . Would all have been # 4 on your team (right behind Duchene, Stastny, and Hejduk).
If you look by GPG, you have lost players 1 and 2 (2 being gone during the year). Kulemin’s 0.37 would have been FIRST on your team, Grabovski’s 0.36 would have been tied for first, MacArthur’s 0.26 would have been 5th.
So playing 82 GP really didn’t inflate their stats over Avs players all that much…
Cheers

I was not intending to “force” either of them to send me pictures, and I don’t think either of them interpreted it that way either. The only person who seems to be creeped out by this is you. I am genuinely sorry that what I said came off in such a way that it would be interpreted as you did, and I will be careful not to repeat anything like this. I can assure you that I’m not some creeper trying to get girls to send me pictures of themselves. When people send me pictures I choose the one that I think will work best for the caricature and then delete the rest. That is all this is.

Well after Sundin for a while there wasn’t really a forward worth getting hot, but even really crappy goalies can put up good numbers for a few games
You think that’s sad? We’ve never won an Art Ross trophy. Whole pile of league leaders before 1947, but there you have it.
Oh, I'm sorry, just one moment. Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?
To be fair, only 3 players won the art ross in a twenty year period between 1980-81 to 2000-2001, and only 26 players in history. It was a trophy dominated by the bests until 10 years ago when someone new would win it every year.
I’m actually fine with it; the Leafs have always had a silly little lunchpail persona going, and having no true dominating stars is part of that. I find the idea that when the Leafs have won they’ve won as a team rather amusing, even if it is a bit nauseatingly precious.
Oh, I'm sorry, just one moment. Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?

is that the douse it in water/liquid first and teh water evaporates so fast it forms a barrier protecting you? This is how fire waking works too. I remember seeing this on PBS once on some science show, the dude even put liquid nitrogen in his mouth and spit it out to prove it.

i thought the firewalking trick was just “walk really fast”. i saw it on mythbusters which means it is 100% true
it’s why you can walk really fast though, the water vapour provides a barrier to protect you, but doesn’t last forever.

Also, very shallow and small. How long has that stream been around? How long will it be there? And what are we calling a stream here? It’s more of a brook or crick. C’mon people, we can do better than this.

Kessel became just the third Leafs player in the past 66 years to score five goals in the team’s first three games of a season, joining Darryl Sittler (1978-79) and Wendel Clark (1986-87 and 1991-92).
