In depth look at the leafs lines

I know it’s early, but I decided to do a look into our lines to check out how they’re doing.

Joffrey Lupul Tyler Bozak Phil Kessel

GP 5 G 4 A 3 PTS 7 GP 5 G 0 A 4 PTS 4 GP 5 G 7 A 5 PTS 12

+ 7 +4 +7

Overview: To me this line looks great; they all seem to be better this year this line just seems to be gelling. Lupul looks great he is scoring and skating hard and he looks like he is back to his old 50-60 point self. Bozak who I thought was very weak least year seems to have gotten a lot stronger, not to mention he has been a defensive genius so far this season. He has been strong on the puck and in the faceoff circle, now I’m a bit confused when Connelly comes back I don’t think he job as the number 1 centre will be just given back to him. Kessel, well do we really have to talk about it. The man is on fire 12 points in 5 games and 7 goals, that’s crazy maybe one good season like this and everybody will shut up about the trade we did to get him.

Clarke MacArthur Mikhail Grabovski Nikolai Kulemin GP 3 G 0 A 1 PTS 1 GP 5 G 1 A 0 PTS 1 GP 5 G 1 A 1 PTS 2

Even -1 -1 -

Overview: Well this line hasn’t looked as good as last year but if you ask me that’s a good and bad thing. The good thing is we’re winning without this line, so if they get going watch out. The bad thing is well there not playing good. One reason they might not be so together yet is that MacArthur was suspended for the first two games so maybe they haven’t meshed yet. MacArthur since he has been back hasn’t looked too bad, he doesn’t stand out much but he is playing alright. Grabo hasn’t really been putting up big numbers but he has been winning big face-offs and playing very well defensively. Kulemin I thought has looked pretty good. He has 2 points but has been strong on the puck, smart on D and seems to be heading in the right direction.

Matt Frattin Matthew Lombardi Colby Armstrong GP 5 G 0 A 0 PTS 0 GP 5 G 1 A 1 PTS 2 GP 5 G 0 A 0 PTS 0

-3 even -3 -

Overview:this line has been doing decent, I’ve like what I’ve seen from Lombardi and Frattin has been trying hard and I’m starting to like him. Colby has been ok but now is hurt, so I’m not sure what will happen maybe Dupuis or Brown get promoted from fourth line or possibly Kadri will get called up. Frattin has been skating hard and hitting I like what I see from him, he scored a nice goal tonight in the shootout to give T.O the win. Lombardi has looked great he has two points has been skating hard creating chances and is doing a good job on the PK. Armstrong hasn’t looked too bad he is hitting and that’s good but now it appears he is hurt.

Mike Brown David Steckel Philippe Dupuis GP 5 G 0 A 2 PTS 2 GP 5 G 0 A 0 PTS 0 GP 5 G 0 A 0 PTS 0

2 -1 -1 -

Overview: For a fourth line they look great. Steckel might be the centre but he really plays on all lines as Wilson loves his face-off skills and puts him out there for draws and extra shifts all the time. Brown has been great getting hits, getting points and creating havoc for the other team I’m very happy with him so far this season. Steckel doesn’t have any points but he is so important to our team. The man is crazy at face-offs he wins them for us all the time and you may not think that’s much, but it means a lot and often has something to do with the outcome of the game. Dupuis hasn’t got too much ice time but I like what I see, he hits and is fast and that’s what you want in a bottom 6 guy.

Dion Phaneuf Carl Gunnarsson

GP 5 G 1 A 5 PTS 6 GP 5 G 0 A 2 PTS 2

8 4

Overview: These two have looks amazing so far this season. Phaneuf is hitting like old Dion, getting points like crazy and that’s awesome. He already has 6 points and is about 22% to last year’s total, hopefully this will be a rebound year for him. Carl has looked good to QBing the second power play making good passes and getting they odd points. He is +4 and I like that, it shows he is cutting down on the mistakes.

John-Michael Liles Luke Shenn

GP 5 G 0 A 3 PTS 3 GP 5 G 0 A 1 PTS 1

Even -1

Overview: This line isn’t amazing me but there not really hurting us so I’m ok with it. Liles has looked pretty good; he really helps our power play and is definitely making us a better offensive team. Shenn has been struggling as of late and his ice time has shown it as he hasn’t played more then 14 minutes in 3 games.

Mike Komisarek Cody Franson Jake Gardiner

GP 5 G 0 A 0 PTS 0 GP 2 G 0 A 1 PTS 1 GP 3 G 0 A 0 PTS 0

-1 -1 -1

Overview: Well this line hasn’t looked too bad. Franson and Gardiner seem to swap about every game so it’s hard for them but they are doing a good job. Komisarek compared to last year has looked great he is making smart plays, taking his time and for once not taking stupid penalties. Franson looked pretty good in his two games, he didn’t play amazing on the power play but he played ok, he has a nice assist on a Kessel goal. Gardiner has been ok too, he is making smart plays and has good patience with the puck, I do think he will get sent down soon though and Franson will begin to get fulltime. Gardiner has looked pretty good but you want him in the AHL where he will play every game and get 20 minutes + of ice time a game.

James Riemer

Record 4-0-1 GAA 2.55 PCT .914 SO 1

Well Riemer has got the job done. He played great the first game of the season. Then since then he has been good enough, he hasn’t played amazing but he has played well enough for us to get the wins and that’s all the counts. I am very happy with what I have seen from him so far. is a fan community that allows members to post their own thoughts and opinions on the Toronto Maple Leafs and hockey in general.
