Leafs at Habs: Re-start the point streak
Who: The Toronto Maple Leafs (4-1-1, 2nd in NE) against the Montreal Canadiens (1-4-1, 5th in the NE)
What: Game #7 of the 2011-12 season.
When: Tonight, October 22, at 7:00 PM EST
Where: Bell Centre, or on TV at CBC, RDS (HD), and on the radio at AM 640
The Leafs will look to bounce back from their Thursday off-night against the Bruins, and will try to avoid the first two consecutive losses of the season. The Candiens are currently two points back of the Senators (2-5-0) in the Northeast, and probably aren't happy about it. Carey Price continues to start, having earned the decision in all six of the Habs' games so far this year. Last year's prodigal netminder sits at .890 SV% and 2.83 GAA. He also has 99 career wins, and will look to earn his round number milestone against the Leafs.
Per @jonasTSN1050, MacArthur is ready to be back in the lineup, Bozak is a gametime decision (foot), and Connolly will likely not make his debut tonight, as Lombardi centered Lupul and Kessel in practice. MGK is reunited, as Kadri-Steckel-Frattin and Rosehill-Dupuis-Brown make up the bottom six, though Steckel will probably continue to take the #1C slot on the first line PP. Gunnarsson-Phaneuf, Liles-Komisarek, and Gardiner-Schenn, were the D-pairings, with Franson back in the box.
Most importantly: Reimer gets the start.

It’s funny how everyone was freaking out over having too many forwards a few weeks ago, looks like the depth is coming in handy with all these injuries.
Flugenweb, space code, twit zone, ass mode, check ze tweets.
All that luck with injures has not carried over this year
Luckily, it seems all the injuries have been mild thus far (DTD or WTW at most)

I hope for an immense beatdown of the Habs………..5-1 Leafs, Kessel has 3 points
Toronto Maple Leafs: All about the Lemon Grabs

Grabbo and Kulie really need to get things going, they’ve been pretty invisible. Did a quick comparison to last year’s first 6 games for both of them, and while they both started slowly last year as well, they’re off to an even worse start this year (although Grabbo does have more goals and SOG, but less total points). Kulie in particular is looking lost…. 2 pts and only 4 SOG through 6 games. That’s 0.67 shots per game, well below last season’s average of 2.11 per game where it was generally agreed he wasn’t shooting enough (and versus 9 SOG through 6 games last year).
On the plus side….. Kessel and Lupul are lights out and have legitimate chemistry, Phaneuf is playing like a beast, and we’re getting slightly above average goaltending from Reimer, which is a huge improvement over our situation last year.
My call – tonight’s game will start a 4-game winning streak and an even longer stretch of generally improved play from the whole team.
In closing – FUCK THE HABS.

Difference here is
you’re sort of ignoring shot attempts. I think Kulemin had 4 missed shots in the opening game against MTL alone. So far Kulemin actually has 12 missed shots (same as Kessel) to tie for the team lead, but unfortunately he also only has 4 on goal. If you add in the attempts he’s had blocked – 4 of them, then he’s sitting at 20 attempts, or 4 per game.
That’s not ideal, and he’ll definitely need more if he’s going to average closer to 3 shots on goal per game, but it’s not all doom and gloom. He just needs to hit the damn net.

You’re completely right, like I said I did a quick comparison. That’s encouraging there’s been more shot attempts, but it still doesn’t change the fact that the overall play of Kulie and Grabbo isn’t where it was last year (especially the 2nd half of the season). Their ability to gain the zone and control the play/possession seems to have vanished. Hopefully it’s short-term and they get things going again. Against the Habs tonight would be the perfect time.
I had something really clever to say here. But I forgot.
They definitely
have shown glimpses from time to time. I think to me what this indicates is that people under-rated the impact MacArthur’s play has had on those two. He needs to get going also, and I think he’s played worse than either Kulemin or Grabo so far… if he starts to play as well as he can, the other two will be more able to do their thing.
If you look at whose production has stalled totally – particularly from a Corsi perspective – it’s him.

I personally have been trying to convince people that he was pretty integral, just on the basis of the number of 1st assists he had as a proportion of his production. He wasn’t just picking up secondary assists all year and floating behind the other two.

You know what kinda freaks me out? That quote from Wilson where he said something along the lines of Grabbo being the toughest player, and that he’ll never actually get hurt from those hits he takes. Fuck that. Grabbo isn’t indestructible, and there shouldn’t be that kind of expectation on anyone. I have this nagging feeling that his health probably isn’t 100%, and that’s what’s affecting the play of that line.

those seats are 95% full every game. they are generally empty the first 5 minutes following intermission (depending on when the first stoppage in play comes) for two reasons… the first being many of those seats have a lounge that comes with them, companies will often have food / drinks in there in between periods, as well as the game on.
the second problem is a lack of servers at the concession stands in the platinum section, it’s absurd actually. the two times I’ve been in seats down there I was late back to my seat at least after one period both times because of this. I hope this doesn’t mean I’m not a ‘real fan’ or whatever.

pedantic point of order
but you don’t MAKE money by winning the lottery… you win it. Making money tends to imply you’re doing something to earn or create it’s value. Buying a lottery ticket is just gambling with more people at the table… and I would never call someone that gambles regularly a person that’s “making” money, unless it is their chosen profession.
This being said, if your chosen profession is to play the lottery, then you’re either very wealthy and can afford buy enough tickets that you’re improving your odds (in which case you don’t need to win it in the first place), or you’re completely fucking insane, in which case you might as well just stab someone and take their tickets. No need for lottery winnings either way.

Has anyone noticed
any of the discussion around the internets on PDO early in the season and who is likely to regress to the mean over time? Kessel and Lupul are really high on the list.
Worst luck by far on the team? Jay Rosehill’s PDO is currently 667… remember that it’s a combination of SH% and SV% at ES while the player is on the ice and the mean is typically close to 1000, though some good players will hover slightly above, and bad players will hover below.
NOBODY should hover at 667.

that we can expect to improve include, Armstrong (800), Lombardi (866), Dupuis (929), Franson (938), Steckel (947), Frattin (976), Kulemin (977), Komisarek (981).

I have no clue what PDO is, but it doesn’t take a genius to know that Kessel and Lupul are producing at an unsustainable rate barring an act of G-d.
it's just
the sum of the ES SV% and SH% for the player and all of his teammates when he’s on the ice. It’s a measure of puck luck basically.
If your SV% is astronomically high, it’ll likely drop, if your SH% is high it’ll drop… and obviously the opposite is true if they’re low.
Typically it trends towards 1000 at the team level over the course of a season.

I knew plenty of good spots when I lived there, but that was a while ago and I was doing an internship… it was also during the lockout, so didn’t have a chance to find the good Leafs spots. I usually get to the Loose Moose or Real Sports when I’m down and want to check a game nowadays.

Of Note regarding

I am watching Flames-Preds, its embarrassing how easily Nashville can skate through their blue line wall and set up the PP yet the Leafs can only dump it in.
the Leafs
can carry to enter the zone, they have done so on numerous occasions… Grabovski, Kessel, Gardiner, Liles are all capable.

interested in some reasons to worry about tonight’s matchup, I recommend this posting by Kent Wilson at Puck Prospectus on how the sky isn’t falling in Montreal.

I'm worried about the matchup...
…because outside of the Cappy and his gunner, the Leafs D has been playing like shit :(
I really want a win tonight though.
It would pretty much eliminate Montrel from contention
ha
not exactly.
I think the D question thing settles itself soon… Schenn and Gardiner look decent on the back end, and Liles will get his minutes on the PP… but the 6th guy is going to be a problem all year until we find someone reliable.

Do you think there’s a chance that Burke decides to try a package deal for help on the back, rather than for an upgrade at forward? I can’t help but think that Suter is a guy he’d love to pry away.

I think
Nashville would be wary… also what would we have to give up to land a stud like Suter? Not so sure that’s a good one to target.

Very true… I’m just thinking more towards the end of the year, so they don’t lose him for free. Although I’m guessing there’ll be a bit of a bidding war.

yeah
he’ll go at the deadline for a ridiculous package, which we MAY be in on, but I don’t want to sacrifice our top picks this year frankly.

Scary quote of the day
Former Leaf Brendan Bell on skating in his first game for the Rangers tonight:
I just want to come in and help the team keep doing what the guys have been doing the past couple of games, playing tight defensively. I just want to help. Watching the past couple of games has helped a lot because we do a couple things differently defensively here in New York than how I have been coached previously.

Lets not kid ourselves folks
we’re 4-1-1 and we’ve got a long way to go. Leafs are going to be a bubble team again, and we’re likely to see things get a bit worse before they get better defensively.

Unfortunately
Aulie has 0 points on the season. and a -5.
That’s team worst in both categories. I don’t think he’s taking the demotion well. Or something.
Or maybe the stat sheet isn’t telling the whole story, but when I watched last weekend he didn’t stand out.

Having trouble keeping your centers healthy? Do they break their ankles even when breathed on?
Well, this is your lucky day! Say hello to Joe Colborne, a fine young center who can pass to his teammates like you wouldn’t believe as well as score goals in ways that allows you to throw away your Viagra.

You can see him live! He’s just a phone call away!

Has score 26 points in 25 GP (1.04 PPG) with the Marlies including last year, as well as that 1 game with the Leafs where he got an assist.

he used it well last year also
he plants himself in front quite well, and he’s still a solid puck distributor. He’d be a huge improvement over Steckel on the top line PP.

He’s grown on me. He’s improved his consistency, and has started using his size more. With the way the injuries are racking up with the Leafs at center, as well as his continued production in the AHL, I would not be surprised if we see him soon.
