Wednesday Night Hockey Talk
It's Wednesday night, there's no Leafs game on, the Marlies game is on 640 AM here, and there is a Habs/Flyers game to trash on TSN. Scrivens is in net, and Colborne is trying to continue his point streak.
So if anyone is interested in continuing the hockey convo, or wants some more advanced stats discussion feel free to continue in the comments section.

This is why I’m starting to agree with Birky that Grabbo may be on the move. Connolly’s not going anywhere with his contract/injury status/NTC, and if we’re really giving Colborne a shot to be our big centre, he’s got to get time in the top 6.

Before the season is over, that is. I doubt Grabbo gets traded any time soon.

see
I think Connolly’s injuries help us here. He can get some time up this year when Connolly is out with injury.
I think Bozak or Lombardi are more likely to be traded than Grabovski unless we can get sizeable return… in which case I think it happens near the deadline.

I doubt they trade Grabbo with the intent to give Colborne top six minutes without giving Colborne some meaningful exposure to the NHL, maybe even in a top 6 role.
by Self Destructive Zones on Oct 26, 2011 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions
if they trade grabbo, they are probably out of the playoff picture at that point, and Colborne would get his shot after the trade, giving the Leafs the off season to evaluate what happens next

Connolly is a stop gap, just like Liles was for Gardiner. If Colborne jumps the time frame, then no worries, just sucks for someone else on the roster (Lombardi? Bozak? Steckel?)

About time that people finally realized how awesome Gunnar is...

you’re right, the numbers aren’t quite right.
there have only been two players drafted in the 4th round since 1994 that are at more than 0.65 ppg for their career – marc savard and milan hejduk. obviously steckel isn’t going to be a key part of a Leafs cup win, but at the same time holding on to 4th round draft picks because they have a miniscule chance of turning into ‘elite’ talent is ridiculous.
I had something really clever to say here. But I forgot.
Exactly. I am not upset at either the trade for Steckel or Brown (though I did scratch my head at the Brown trade at the time because I didn’t know the guy). Building a team that can compete today is important and needs to be balanced against not mortgaging the future. Trading a fourth isn’t mortgaging the future..

He is not the “future”. Ideally he is. He is still a prospect with virtually no NHL experience and can easily flame out. I can’t stand assuming a prospect will succeed. He is a good piece ot have and hopefully he’ll turn into a productive NHLer but that should not deter us from bringing in a top tier center for fear of “stunting” his development. If he can prove he deserves his spot in the NHL, THEN we move someone.

Oh he deserves an oppurtunity but I don’t want to trade away Grabs assuming he’ll be a good NHLer. Also, he looked bad in that game (admitted himself that he skated like molasses the first half), and that point was ALL Kessel. He passed to him in the Leafs zone and Kessel rushed up the ice and scored.

Kadri's numbers
last year were much better than Colborne’s last year. Theoretically Kadri could be well over 2.0 ppg also.

So...
if Kadri can get up to 2.0 ppg in 7 months, by all means I expect that sort of production.
Here’s the thing, Kadri’s game will be shiftiness and speed at the pro level, he needs to work on that still.
Colborne is STILL growing into his frame, and if he figures out how to position himself well, and improves his skating enough, his hands are already there and he thinks the game very well. Colborne’s NHL upside is higher than Kadri’s if he puts it all together.

if you can find
a 6’5" 215 lb C with size that has hands like Colborne and thinks the game well then you’re in business.
There’s a reason we got him for Kaberle, and Gardiner for Beauchemin, and then ended up with Franson for Lebda.
Think about the quality of the prospects and the level of player we moved.

I’m confused. If Colborne was born (heh) Jan 30th 1990 and Kadri Oct 6th 1990 then isn’t Colborne 8.25 months older? October is the 10th month and January the 1st. Where do you get 7 from?

I imagine it can be measured which team has possession…No? Not the specific player just the team. Than you would just have to compare it to a TOI sheet.

ie one of the trackers has 3 buttons infront of him. One for team a, one for team b, and one for normal. He just presses the button for which team has the puck at the time. With a TOI sheet you can figure out possession on vs off for each player.

possession
in soccer is far clearer frankly… field is larger and guys aren’t physically tied up as often.

there's a lot of time

No one has possession. I can’t track it. It needs to be tracked by the NHL… I guess I could for one team but I don’t have the time to devote to that…
It just doesn’t seem THAT difficult. Am I crazy? Does it not seem reasonable for them to track?

From the box where the rest of the team is. The moron Kerry Fraser explains the office crew here:
The Off-Ice Crew for every NHL game is comprised of approximately 16 individuals that are hired by the NHL as part-time employees. They receive a small stipend for each game they work. The crew is under the direction of a Crew Chief in each NHL city who manages the group and assigns them to their respective posts for each game. Their various titles and responsibilities of the crew members are as follows:
Located upstairs in the arena press box area.
1 Official Scorer: To determine and award the accurate and official scoring of a goal and assists.
4 Computer Programmers: Their duties include recording each players respective shift time on the ice and a running record of who touches the puck for scoring and assist award; players + and -; face-off wins/losses and which linesman drops the puck for every face-off; shots on goal (type of shot slap shot, wrist, snap, backhand; and from what location on the ice the shot was taken); body checks/hits-which player delivered hit and to whom (rub outs and penalties do not constitute a hit); blocked shots; penalties recorded and which referee assessed/announced the penalty (which is why on rare occasions you might see one referee race his partner to the penalty box if they both have their arms up for a call). This group also records at least 3 or 4 good/excellent saves make by the goalkeepers in the game to be utilized by media for game highlights.
1 Video Goal Judge is located in a secure and separate box upstairs in the press box area with a 3 way communication device to the Situation Room in Toronto and the Penalty Bench to loop in the referee. (A video technician is located in the booth as well and hired by the team to operate the equipment. If an Officiating Manager/Supervisor or Hockey Operations person is in attendance they would generally sit in this location as well.)
1 Spotter: His job is to assist the computer programmers by shouting out puck possession and other stats that will be recorded as listed above.
1 ATC (Arena Technical Coordinator) that makes sure the computers, real time scoring and timing devices work correctly.
Located down at ice level:
1 Penalty Time Keeper
1 Game Time Keeper
2 Penalty Box Door Openers
1 TV Commercial Timeout Coordinator (signals game participants when television commercial takes place and when to return to action utilizing a light system located in the penalty bench area.)
2 Goal Judges (in modern day with use of Video Review the Goal Judges have been relocated from directly behind the net/glass in most buildings to a lower section of the press box or catwalk. They turn the goal light on when the referee points to signal a goal. The two or more seats that replaced their glass cage behind the net are sold for premium seating.)
I get as fans that we can’t do better, but I think this could be tracked and ideally released to us at some point.

I think it’s totally plausible, and some teams may even have guys who do track that kind of information. But Corsi can be gathered from the stats the NHL already collects, while possession time can’t.

Well, generally speaking a fair amount of the meat dishes that you’ll find at a lot of Indian places aren’t actually authentic, but Indian cooking using meat products because there’s a demand for it.
The vegetarian food on the other hand is usually much more authentic and has had a lot more thought and time put into the recipes…and of course it usually shows.

lol I’ve never smoked cigs but I smoke cigars on occasion, The rules are getting pretty unreasonable if you ask me. Asbestos ceiling tiles still flying around everywhere, millions of cars driving around and we think forcign smokers to walk 30 ft is going to help our health? crazyness. Also I can’t walk into a Cigar shop named: “Smokes and Mags” and look at the product I want to buy? That pisses me off so much.

To be perfectly honest as a non-smoker I liked the rules as they were…at least that way I could avoid the joints that allowed smoking and it wasn’t outside everywhere…it seems like the new rules just make things worse for everyone involved.

I don’t mind the no smoking indoors, but if I walk into a place called Smokes and Mags, I going there to buy a smoke, I’ve already made my decision, the lack of ads will not change a thing, stay out of my life Dalton!!!

Oh for sure, just from my POV if it’s between none indoors and none outdoors but choice indoors, I’d take the second because I can choose to avoid places that allow it…just seems to make a bit more sense.

Its all about social engineering to in the long run make smoking less appealing. Forcing people to smoke outside in the long run will probably decrease smokers…

Interesting tidbit here
In medschool we were told that the most important thing a family doctor can do for a person’s long term health is get their patient to quit smoking. More important than vaccines, than giving them antibiotics, than watching for signs of chronic disease. Quitting smoking. It really is that bad for you.

Interesting…actually I kinda feel like I encounter more secondhand smoke now than I did before the full indoor ban…now I can’t really avoid it, before I just never went to places that allowed it.

Again the idea is long term, that these rules frankly make it a pain in the ass to be a smoker and less people will start, more will quit. A large part of policy making (when done right) often takes into account “social engineering”.
Also nobody properly enforces the distance to buildings rules…

Honestly I appreciate that. One thing that drives me insane is walking down the street and people literally blowing smoke in my face. I appreciate that sometimes I’m just next to the smoker, but sometimes I feel a small effort could go a long way… Shrug.

There tend to be a lot of smokers just outside subway stations in Toronto, so it’s pretty much impossible to avoid.

Talk to your family doctor and try to make a plan with him/her. There are many options. It is by no way an easy route (I think I remember it takes the average person like 4 serious attempts or well into a dozen attempts) and the most work will have to come from you, but your MD cna help.

Here are some basic rules for dealing with the CRA.
1. Don’t drop anything off in Calgary because it will take them 2 extra weeks to mail it to Winnipeg and that’s also one extra chance they will lose it.
2. Don’t ever send anything original unless you’re being audited then you have no choice sometimes. Just pray a lot
3. Use couriers if it’s important and have them sign for it and then call incessantly to make sure it’s being processed. Otherwise you might wait a few months and finally call only to be told that they don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about

yeah your RRSP limit carries over and TFSA is a virtual limit. It started in 09 so if you put money in for the first time in say 2 years from now you can put in 25K right off the bat. And with indexation that might even go up to 26K

yeah RRSP is 18% of your earned income to a max of 22K I think minus Pension adjustments if you work at a place with a company pension (yeah right). And it just builds. TFSA’s are straight 5K a year plus withdrawals from the previous year. Technically if you hit a miracle stock you can turn 5K into say 200K and pull that out. Next year you’d have 205K limit.

Okay, so how does the RRSP carryover work? It would be 18% of my income from the years where I didn’t make a contribution?

18% of your earned income from the years that you worked basically minus any contributions you made. So if you didn’t make any it just takes 18% of your earned income (employment, self employment and the like) and adds itself every year. So if you earned 10K one year you’d get 1800 room. Next year you Make 5K you add another 900 and now you have 2700 total room.

Ahhh okay, thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I definitely need to do some reading on this, sooner rather than later too. I have my budgets made out for my expected income level to max those out as soon as possible, but what to do with them once they’re actually in the accounts is something else entirely.

don’t buy just an interest generating TFSA you’ll get like 10 bucks a year. Get a stock trading one and try to find some good advice about the market. Or if you want to be super safe GIC’s.

Pretty much lol. Can’t wait to make mine into a serfdom.
Raycroft! I like the move. Falls inline with the push for youth and is a solution for the future. Trading Rask was unfortunate, but with Pogge and Raycroft only being 26, I think the TO goaltending future is a bright one. - Some guy from 2006

That’s quite a few transitions

3) Glen Healy sucks and is a terrible human being
yeah the ugly statistic is that every Serb male has on average seen 2 wars in their lifetime. We’re in the middle of the balkan shitstorm.

haha yea we did good, but it would have been nice to get another guy that was in there system at the time.
I think Goligoski was down there he woulda been nice or Tyler Kennedy. But no Luca Caputi i was happy with him but ever since the cheeta surge commercial shame on you luca.
Maybe he wanted to have something in common with Espo. Or maybe he was the only non-retired Italian hockey player who D’Angelo could get.
