Maple Leafs Travel To Kanata
Who: Toronto Maple Leafs (7-2-1; 15 points; 1st in Northeast) vs Ottawa Senators (6-5-0; 12 points; 3rd in Northeast)
What: Game #11 of the 2011-12 Regular Season
Where: Scotiabank Place, Kanata
When: 7:30pm on Sportsnet
Tickets: Check out TiqIQ to see if there are any deals worth buying.
Last Matchup: Leafs won 6-5 after almost blowing a 5-1 lead, Phil Kessel picked up his first hat trick as a Leaf.
Tonight, two of the hottest teams in the NHL will be facing off in the hinterlands of Ottawa. The Senators have won five games in a row, a move they will regret when they finish 24th, and the Leafs are trying to sustain their time atop of the Northeast Division. Both teams played Saturday as the Senators came back from 4-1 down to beat the Rangers in a shootout and the Leafs beat back the league-leading Penguins 4-3 on the back of great performances by Jonas Gustavsson, Dion Phaneuf, Tim Connolly, and Sens-killer supreme Phil Kessel.
Starting Goalies
James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen just tweeted that Robin Lehner will be making his season debut tonight. Meanwhile, Jonas Gustavsson has put together back-to-back strong games. He's stopped 62 of the last 67 shots he's faced for a .925sv%.
Among the forwards, two of the league's top point-getters will take the ice.
In their first meeting of the year, Kessel took advantage of the slowness of Jared Cowen and Sergei Gonchar to pot a hat trick. He is tied with Dave Andreychuk and Daniel Marois with the most franchise goals in October. I don't care what Jason Spezza did but it probably came on the powerplay and involved psychotic giggling. The Senators other main offensive threat Daniel Alfredsson is out after taking a filthy elbow in the head away from the play by the Rangers' Wojtek Wolski which will no doubt result in a Shanaban. He's been replaced by femme fatale Nikita Filatov.
Otherwise, the Leafs shouldn't have any changes to their lineup. Chris Neil could always be taught a lesson or two but when he's not interested in going to class then it's best to find a better way to get the message across. The Leafs have succeeded in the past two games in part because they have not had to shelter guys like Rosehill and Orr. Better to beat up the Senators with goals than with fists. The Leafs have done enough of the latter for a while. The Leafs will be focused on extending their 12-5-2 record against the Senators since 2008-2009.

I had no idea the record was that lopsided in recent history.
Worried about Gustavsson’s fatigue level; not worried about goals going in. I don’t expect a classic, but these games are always fun. Here’s continued chemistry on the top two lines.

if the icetime is as spread out as it was last night, with 4 lines that can all do stuff, should be a pretty good game.
What’s the general opinion here: was the spread out ice time because it was a back to back sequence or does Wilson truly trust the team to roll four lines?
Both I think, When Orr isn’t playing, none of the four lines are a real defensive liability and all forecheck well.

Anyone else think Scrivens should start? There’s another back-to-back this week. Gus seems to play well in spurts, but then tire. When is Reimer back?

Reimer will hopefully be ready to go for Wednesday.
I’m all for Scrivens starting, but I have a feeling that even if he did we won’t find out till 30 mins prior to the game, ’cause Wilson just rolls that way.

Leafs are 3rd in GPG (behind Wsh and Philly) and 5th last in GA/G (ahead of Ottawa, Wpg, Clb, and Philly).
Both us and Philly are playing firewagon hockey (but Tampa did it last year!)

Funny thing is Leafs have played the best hockey essentially since the lockout since Jan 1 2011, and that entire time they have been getting outshot. Badly. And have been getting above-league average sh%.
Is it the team’s new style? They seem to be getting massacred by Corsi and Fenwick stats yet are putting up points at an incredible pace. I fear this may be leading to a Colorado-style plummet back to earth.

The Leafs wona lot of one-goal games. As such, for the final five minutes, the other team is furiously trying to tie the game. Relatedly, the Leafs don’t need to press on offence and are content to play out the clock. The result is that in the last five minutes of any game the shots are likely 8-0 for the other team. That’s to be expected.
I imagine if you look at one-goal games that aren’t decided in OT, the losing team often has more shots because of the late surge.
This. Even looking at last night’s game, the Pens had possession of the puck for probably 90%+ of the last 5 minutes.

Score effects account for a portion of it to be sure.
But that doesn’t explain for the 12% team shooting (2nd highest in the league behind Washington who have 12.3%. As a sidenote, Boston has a league-low 6.3% so expect them to bust out of this slump. Detroit also has 6.9%)
The offensive support will likely come down and then Leafs need better than to allow 3+ goals per game.
Even if Gus manages to increase his sv%, the team has to prevent this many shots.
No more moral victories, no more excuses. Put up or shut up.
