Leave it to Mr. Carey Price to start the 2011-2012 NHL season with a thud.  Looks like the beginning of a wonderful winter in Montreal.  As for the Leafs, well...they won.  It wasn't the greatest performance we've seen, but James Reimer was reliable when needed.  New recruits Matthew Lombardi and David Steckel had strong first showings in the blue and white; Lombardi flashed a little speed on a shorthanded rush in the second period which led to a hilarious defensive breakdown by the Habs, while Steckel took the Montreal centers to school in the face-off circle.

Overall a good, not great performance on opening night.  Next step is to keep that same pressure from the 2nd and 3rd periods and crush the Sens on Saturday night.

Star-divide

Reimer shuts the door

Phaneuf laser beam

Lombardi opens the scoring

how much did he get? I would think his ice time would go up if we got a lot of PP time. Was also a close game, so probably didn’t want him out there that much as the game went on.

2 mins exactly of PP time

Didn’t Gardiner miss about a third of a period getting stitched up after a stick to the face? That probably cost him 2 mins. It was his first game, I could see him settling into 17 mins per night which at the NHL level does him a lot of good.

I’m not a physicist, but my guess is that the slinky contracts towards the center, and the rate at which it contracts upwards from the bottom is the same as the rate at which it is falling, so it looks like the bottom edge of it is not moving at all, until the top part meets it and the whole thing falls simultaneously.

Pretty close. For the bottom of the slinky to stop moving it needs to extend to the point where the force of gravity is equal to the force of the spring.

When you let go and it moves downwards the spring force is ready to pull as hard as gravity so the bottom stays in place.

I liked the complete lack of humour from the guys at HEOTP

Super happy with the win, but I hope you’re kidding about the beginning of your post.

I hope Reimer isn’t that “fantastic” this season.

Price didn’t look brutal to me at all. He let in 2 goals on 18 shots, and his sv % sucks, yeah. His defence shit the bed on the first, and he was on his ass – maybe shared blame at most. I don’t know who’s going to stop the second goal.

Stats aside, Price played a good game. Made some giant saves.
