Game #2: The Battle of Ontario Begins Again
Who: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators
What: Game #2 of the Regular Season. Leafs 1-0-0 (2), Senators 0-1-0 (0)
Where: Air Canada Centre in Toronto Canada
When: TV - 7:00pm on CBC. Radio - AM640 Toronto
Why: To continue the Leafs' 4-year-long season series victory over Ottawa.
Take the jump for some thoughts on the matchup tonight and the projected rosters.
Last night I sat in Buffalo Wild Wings downing delicious morsels of chicken doing the same things I assume Head Coach Ron Wilson was doing last night, watching the Leafs next opponent get absolutely trounced in their season opener. Living up to the expectations of many, the Ottawa Senators would beaten like a red-headed stepchild in every aspect of the game. I would say the only player for them who actually gave a damn was Jason Spezza, but don't worry Nail Yakupov lovers in Ottawa, he'll probably get traded away for peanuts in a move that will help secure the first overall pick.
Just like me, Wilson must have loved what he saw. Sure the Wings employed their tried and true method of a solid puck possession game, but where they were most effective was on the forecheck and the transition game; the same two aspects that are the Leafs' strong suits. If golem on skates Todd Bertuzzi has the speed to get behind the Senators for a breakaway goal, just think what Phil Kessel or Matt Lombardi can do. If 5'11", 174lbs Darren Helm can out muscle the pylons on Ottawa's blueline, just think what Matt Frattin or Nikolai Kulemin will do to them in the corners. If Dion Phaneuf can fire laser beams past a top 5 goalie like Carey Price, just think what he can do to the tattered shooter tutor that is Craig Anderson. Oh yeah, and the Senators are playing back-to-back road games. Strap yourselves in folks, it's going to be one hell of a game tonight!
Projected Leafs Lineup
Forwards
Frattin-Grabovski-Kulemin
Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
Dupuis-Steckel-Armstrong
Orr-Lombardi-Brown
Defense

The Leafs have the better team, the benefit of last change, and are playing a tired opponent. They need to come out strong early and finish the game before it starts.

Also, they need to give it 110%, get pucks in deep to create some scoring chances and keep their sticks in the lanes and make smart plays.

Yeah it’s really. Hockey Reference is able to do what they do because people can pay money to sponsor a person or team’s page. It’s an annual tradition around here once subscriptions are up for renewal to select who we want to sponsor, and what we want it to say. Take Jacques Demers’ page for instance.

think more along the lines of
Xerxes … Zoroaster… things like that… Persians have been pretty long standing as a culture… they’d be up there with the Romans… I think it’s fair that they prefer that to “Iranian”… which is a 20th century creation.

Very much depends on the religious and cultural views of the family/individual. Not many have an honestly good view on either eras. Just some less likely to criticize either openly.

yeah
and the “Persian” culture extends back to well before Christ, so thinking only of the most recent asshole that was in charge isn’t really fair particularly.

but I think I’ll share it in here… Reimer’s ES SV% (including the pre-season) is currently .938… even before the shut out it was .920 in the pre-season, which would have ranked him 26th out of 40+ NHL goalies with 30+ starts.

He had a .933 ES SV% last yeard, 3rd best among goalies with 20+ starts.
Also, I’m not sure if you’re saying the .938 is good, or if the .920 before that was bad. Both of them fall victim to small sample sizes.

I'm saying .938 is good so far
and .920 is NOT bad… not great but not bad.
I’m just saying that all those stats that are being thrown around about his poor pre-season are sort of misleading because of how shit the Leafs PK was.

I’m not saying he’s going to be a top 5 goalie or anything based on his first 5 gp, I just think he’s been ok to good so far, and there’s nothing preventing that from continuing.

Konopka is a Leaf Hater
“I hated Toronto before I got to Ottawa. It helps that everybody in Ottawa hates Toronto as well.
“We had some rivalries with them last year (in Long Island) and there are a lot of guys on that team that aren’t getting a Christmas card from me and, hopefully, aren’t looking forward to me being in the lineup. I’ve followed the rivalry quite close and it’s a good one.”

He went to high school with my Wife. I don’t know which team he was a fan of growing up. Also he spent a lot of time playing in Cinncinati (which is a hole) with the Ducks organization… and now he’s stuck in Ottawa after a stint on Long Island.

Have to? All of them would be nice. Toronto has won the past 4 season series against the Senators, averaging 8 out of a possible 12 points. Going 4-2-0 in 6 games in probably what we should shoot for. Doing better than that would be difficult.

except
Ottawa has a solid chance of finishing near the bottom of the NHL, so us taking 5 of 6 would be pretty awesome.

all the stuff about small/big sample sizes is entirely valid… but the assumption that a guy will go from horrible stretch to awesome stretch isn’t particularly logical.
Good players don’t tend to go through stretches where they’re -8 in the OHL with regularity, otherwise they wouldn’t end up well into the plus section of things.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Except
Olden came over from Europe to play a more NA style of game. That takes time to adapt, and it shouldn’t be surprising to see him having growing pains. It’s the same thing that went on with Mueller.
"We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."
- Niels Bohr
not really
Mueller took time offensively, but his D was pretty damn good from the get go. He was only a -2 in his first 7 games despite that “adjustment”. In November he posted a goal and 4 assists through 14 games with a +4 rating.
He never had a -8 stretch. He was -6 over a 7 game stretch in December, but he had 4 goals and 6 points in that span, including a hat trick game where he was +2… He finished with 5 goals and 11 points in the month and was even.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Olden isn’t known as a defensive player, though. As you said, it took Mueller time to adjust offensively. So, why not give Olden the same benefit of the doubt?
"We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."
- Niels Bohr
I am
jeez… this is getting sort of irritating… I posted it as an update.
At NO point did I say I’m giving up on Olden, or he’s a bust, or anything of that sort.
I said I was worried that he was -8 so far… that’s all… wtf is so horrible about that?
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
if I had watched one game
and seen him get blown by defensively repeatedly and end up -3… I could say I was worried… nobody would say much because I’d “watched the games”.
I am stating that he’s -8 after like 7 games, which is worrying… and apparently that’s not ok? I don’t get it.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
conversely
Percy is +10 so far… should I assume this ISN’T a good thing? I mean it’s a small sample size for him too.
Should I make zero positive or negative assertions on the basis of anything under 20+ games?
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
I think since we’ve really got nothing other than goals/assists and plus-minus, it’s difficult to make any real assertions

well that's sort of
silly… why is it a big deal that McKegg had 6 assists last night then?

small sample size
it’s only assists…
no assertions can be made? are you guys reading what you’re typing?
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
It’s nice to see a prospect of ours get a 6 assist game, especially when it’s an Erie record and all of them were primary assists. It doesn’t mean I think of McKegg any differently than I how did during preseason.
"We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."
- Niels Bohr
right
so it’s positive… but no more positive than before? I guess we shouldn’t take any note of things like Sittler’s 10 point game either then?
I think there’s probably a correlation between single game production points and overall production… call me crazy, but I just think it might be the case.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
you guys do realize
that all those small samples make up the bigger one right? Like they’re incorporated into it…
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
so ignoring them
or discounting them as meaningful is sort of … well… impossible – if you ever plan on using the larger sample that is?
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
for instance
Even if Olden goes +8 over the remainder of the year, which would be quite good as a development… he’ll still only be an even player over the larger sample.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Okay, so we both agree that it would be nice to see how Olden develops as the season goes along.
"We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."

yes
and I was never against that perspective… which makes this whole conversation a bit … different.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
Again, it’s too early to judge these players. One really good game is nice, but I’d like to see at what level of play he sustains over a full season.
"We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."
- Niels Bohr
right
and all his previous seasons… I get it… I’m just saying that small samples are also important… largely as a portion of the larger sample’s you’re concerned about.

one or two games
really can make a difference… like between making or not making the playoffs.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
and I do disagree
with this…
Again, it’s too early to judge these players
I can judge a 10 game stretch on the basis of how a guy plays in that stretch… if that’s what I’m going to assess that’s the whole set in it’s entirety. I never implied that the season was ruined, or that I was giving up on Olden… I really have no idea where all of this is coming from other than “wait and see” sort of viewpoints, which I’m fine with.
If a guy has a good start, I think “jee this is good – I hope it continues”… I know it’s a small sample but I still think it’s good.
Similarly, if a guy starts poorly, I think “hmm this isn’t good so far – I hope he turns it around”… again… small sample size, but I’m not going to be unaware of the trend thus far.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
all I said was
“this is worrying”… and somehow this led to people telling me I can’t worry?
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
no he says
don’t… not quite the same thing.
That’s sort of my problem with the response I got to my original posting. Nobody said “don’t worry it’ll be ok”… they were saying “you can’t do this because of small sample sizes”… etc.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
well actually
to be fair… a number of people said “he just needs time to adjust”… which I accept.
I’m just saying so far he doesn’t seem to have adjusted.
Also… Erie sucks so far.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
I think I just misinterpreted your use of the word “worrying”. Apologies.
"We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."
- Niels Bohr
it's ok
and you weren’t the only one… worrying to me just means I noticed it as not a positive, and I’d like to see some improvement… that’s all it meant.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
I’ve just seen people use the term “worrying” to imply that they think that player will bust (hello HFBoards). Again, apologies.
"We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."

in January
he was -2, but had 7 points in 9 games, and in Feb, despite only having 2 points in 10 games, he finished -1. March he had 5 goals and 7 points in 3 games, and he was a combined +4…
so yeah… aside from one brief stretch of 7 games out of a 57 game season, he was pretty damn solid in his own end, and was generally productive offensively once he figured shit out.

I don’t like using +/- when evaluating players individually, especially prospects. I think it’s better to watch the games before judging our prospects based on a stat that can be manipulated by team play.
As for Olden, SSS and in need of adjustment to the NA game. If he continues to have trouble scoring points, then there is room for concern.

Can we just start the game Konopka vs. Orr in the 1st minute, send them off for 5min and keep them on the bench the rest of the game?
Then we can watch some hockey.

Friedman was doing a segment called Friedman 5 on Game Day. One of his 5 points, was who was the most important player to a team in NHL. Friedman said, that the most important player to a team this year is Reimer. His thinking is no other player can make an impact to a team like Reimer this year. And so the leaf’s success is Reimer’s success. This segued into a nicknames of for Reimer – Optimus Reim, Reiminster of Defence and Friedman added that he loved the nickname that one of the fans from PPP, a maple leaf fan blog, tweeted for updates on Reimer – namely "Vezina-Calder-Hart Update"

After it was 5-0. I watched that game and Detroit just sat back after it was 5-0. Spezza’s first goal went off of Ian White’s foot in front of the net and bounced straight up and over Howard. The second was a great effort by Spezza. They were solidly outplayed for 50 minutes in that game.

I know they said they wouldn’t trade Spezza…. but if this team is tanking mid-season… I can’t see how they don’t.

Well, either we add the talent now, and try to go into the playoffs, or we wait until Burke gets canned and then the next guy gets hired to do a tank ’n rebuild
players like Spezza wouldn’t come along everyday, and Murray just may decide to gamble on a trade, figuring we’ll fall on our faces again and give him a top-10 pick, unlike the 25-30 range he’d see from a real contender

Not that I can read Murray's mind
but I don’t think Ottawa wants to do a long tank, especially if they draft someone this year who can join the big team asap and be an impact player (i.e. one of those Commie kids). I don’t think they want to go the Edmonton route.
They’ll tank this year and then sign a bunch of grinders and try for the playoffs next year. Unless they get a hell of an offer I bet they keep Spezza around.
meh,
a) that was against Howard
b) Old Man Lidstrom can’t shield him forever, as is now apparent
c) those 3 goals were after the Sens were down I think 5-0, so the Red Wings let off the gas a little bit
