Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Game #2: The Battle of Ontario Begins Again

Who: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Ottawa Senators

What: Game #2 of the Regular Season. Leafs 1-0-0 (2), Senators 0-1-0 (0)

Where: Air Canada Centre in Toronto Canada

When: TV - 7:00pm on CBC. Radio - AM640 Toronto

Why: To continue the Leafs' 4-year-long season series victory over Ottawa.

Take the jump for some thoughts on the matchup tonight and the projected rosters.

Star-divide

Last night I sat in Buffalo Wild Wings downing delicious morsels of chicken doing the same things I assume Head Coach Ron Wilson was doing last night, watching the Leafs next opponent get absolutely trounced in their season opener. Living up to the expectations of many, the Ottawa Senators would beaten like a red-headed stepchild in every aspect of the game. I would say the only player for them who actually gave a damn was Jason Spezza, but don't worry Nail Yakupov lovers in Ottawa, he'll probably get traded away for peanuts in a move that will help secure the first overall pick.

Just like me, Wilson must have loved what he saw. Sure the Wings employed their tried and true method of a solid puck possession game, but where they were most effective was on the forecheck and the transition game; the same two aspects that are the Leafs' strong suits. If golem on skates Todd Bertuzzi has the speed to get behind the Senators for a breakaway goal, just think what Phil Kessel or Matt Lombardi can do. If 5'11", 174lbs Darren Helm can out muscle the pylons on Ottawa's blueline, just think what Matt Frattin or Nikolai Kulemin will do to them in the corners. If Dion Phaneuf can fire laser beams past a top 5 goalie like Carey Price, just think what he can do to the tattered shooter tutor that is Craig Anderson. Oh yeah, and the Senators are playing back-to-back road games. Strap yourselves in folks, it's going to be one hell of a game tonight!

Projected Leafs Lineup

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel

(Though I wouldn't be surprised to see Franson play instead of Gardiner.)

Goalies

The Leafs have the better team, the benefit of last change, and are playing a tired opponent. They need to come out strong early and finish the game before it starts.

Also, they need to give it 110%, get pucks in deep to create some scoring chances and keep their sticks in the lanes and make smart plays.

it's usually

think more along the lines of

Xerxes … Zoroaster… things like that… Persians have been pretty long standing as a culture… they’d be up there with the Romans… I think it’s fair that they prefer that to “Iranian”… which is a 20th century creation.

Very much depends on the religious and cultural views of the family/individual. Not many have an honestly good view on either eras. Just some less likely to criticize either openly.

So I tweeted this last night

but I think I’ll share it in here… Reimer’s ES SV% (including the pre-season) is currently .938… even before the shut out it was .920 in the pre-season, which would have ranked him 26th out of 40+ NHL goalies with 30+ starts.

He had a .933 ES SV% last yeard, 3rd best among goalies with 20+ starts.

Also, I’m not sure if you’re saying the .938 is good, or if the .920 before that was bad. Both of them fall victim to small sample sizes.

Konopka

grew up down in St Catharines.

He went to high school with my Wife. I don’t know which team he was a fan of growing up. Also he spent a lot of time playing in Cinncinati (which is a hole) with the Ducks organization… and now he’s stuck in Ottawa after a stint on Long Island.

Maybe he’s just spent so much time living in crappy places that he genuinely feels venom towards such a nice town like Toronto? Maybe not.

Have to? All of them would be nice. Toronto has won the past 4 season series against the Senators, averaging 8 out of a possible 12 points. Going 4-2-0 in 6 games in probably what we should shoot for. Doing better than that would be difficult.

all the stuff about small/big sample sizes is entirely valid… but the assumption that a guy will go from horrible stretch to awesome stretch isn’t particularly logical.

Good players don’t tend to go through stretches where they’re -8 in the OHL with regularity, otherwise they wouldn’t end up well into the plus section of things.

Olden came over from Europe to play a more NA style of game. That takes time to adapt, and it shouldn’t be surprising to see him having growing pains. It’s the same thing that went on with Mueller.

by Frag on Oct 8, 2011 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

not really

Mueller took time offensively, but his D was pretty damn good from the get go. He was only a -2 in his first 7 games despite that “adjustment”. In November he posted a goal and 4 assists through 14 games with a +4 rating.

He never had a -8 stretch. He was -6 over a 7 game stretch in December, but he had 4 goals and 6 points in that span, including a hat trick game where he was +2… He finished with 5 goals and 11 points in the month and was even.

and I do disagree

Again, it’s too early to judge these players

I can judge a 10 game stretch on the basis of how a guy plays in that stretch… if that’s what I’m going to assess that’s the whole set in it’s entirety. I never implied that the season was ruined, or that I was giving up on Olden… I really have no idea where all of this is coming from other than “wait and see” sort of viewpoints, which I’m fine with.

If a guy has a good start, I think “jee this is good – I hope it continues”… I know it’s a small sample but I still think it’s good.

Similarly, if a guy starts poorly, I think “hmm this isn’t good so far – I hope he turns it around”… again… small sample size, but I’m not going to be unaware of the trend thus far.

I don’t like using +/- when evaluating players individually, especially prospects. I think it’s better to watch the games before judging our prospects based on a stat that can be manipulated by team play.

As for Olden, SSS and in need of adjustment to the NA game. If he continues to have trouble scoring points, then there is room for concern.

and I just finished checking on Gustavsson’s ES SV% from pre-season… at .931 it was quite a bit better than Reimer’s.

Friedman was doing a segment called Friedman 5 on Game Day. One of his 5 points, was who was the most important player to a team in NHL. Friedman said, that the most important player to a team this year is Reimer. His thinking is no other player can make an impact to a team like Reimer this year. And so the leaf’s success is Reimer’s success. This segued into a nicknames of for Reimer – Optimus Reim, Reiminster of Defence and Friedman added that he loved the nickname that one of the fans from PPP, a maple leaf fan blog, tweeted for updates on Reimer – namely "Vezina-Calder-Hart Update"

After it was 5-0. I watched that game and Detroit just sat back after it was 5-0. Spezza’s first goal went off of Ian White’s foot in front of the net and bounced straight up and over Howard. The second was a great effort by Spezza. They were solidly outplayed for 50 minutes in that game.

Explanation please. There is quite a bit of anti-lupul sentiment. what changed since his decent last half of the season?

by jeffgm on Oct 8, 2011 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, either we add the talent now, and try to go into the playoffs, or we wait until Burke gets canned and then the next guy gets hired to do a tank ’n rebuild

players like Spezza wouldn’t come along everyday, and Murray just may decide to gamble on a trade, figuring we’ll fall on our faces again and give him a top-10 pick, unlike the 25-30 range he’d see from a real contender

Scoring by committee FTMFW!

by Peter de Chatham on Oct 8, 2011 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that I can read Murray's mind

but I don’t think Ottawa wants to do a long tank, especially if they draft someone this year who can join the big team asap and be an impact player (i.e. one of those Commie kids). I don’t think they want to go the Edmonton route.

They’ll tank this year and then sign a bunch of grinders and try for the playoffs next year. Unless they get a hell of an offer I bet they keep Spezza around.

by samspade on Oct 8, 2011 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

meh,
a) that was against Howard
b) Old Man Lidstrom can’t shield him forever, as is now apparent
c) those 3 goals were after the Sens were down I think 5-0, so the Red Wings let off the gas a little bit
