Shake, Rattle, and Roll
After a month out of action, James Reimer is on his way back into the lineup after 'concussion-like' symptoms. Around the league, some kid in Pittsburgh made his debut on Monday night and in New York Marc Staal is on his way back from his own concussion. It's heartening for a couple of former NHLers that had their careers short by concussions:
"Sidney’s long-term outcome looks a lot more promising than it would have even last year," said LaFontaine, who scored 468 goals from 1983 to 1998 with the Islanders, Sabres and Rangers. "With all the new rules the N.H.L. has put in this season under Brendan Shanahan to cut down on checks to the head and neck area, we know Sidney Crosby doesn’t have to take those kinds of hits again."

good news: the leafs pts% is .591, on pace for almost 97 pts.
bad news: that pts % puts them at 16th in the league right now. damn you parity!

Kinda scary though, considering we had that great start to the season and have already lost our cushion. We need to go on another good run before the new year, hopefully Reimer can go unbeaten in regulation until then.

Counterpoint: we won the first game (yes, it was 6-5, but it was a blowout before the Leafs decided to take a 3rd period snooze). The other two games, the Leafs just played badly and the Sens capitalized on it.
If anything, they’re good at taking advantage of when we’re not at our best. If the Leafs play half decent against them though, they’ll beat the Sens.

Boston had good underlying stats and just weren’t getting the bounces. With Tim Thomas matching his performance from last year, that team is bound to win the division barring some kind of colossal collapse from Thomas.

RE: Franson
I think Franson is coming around nicely. he’s finally playing some minutes on his usual side. IMO he looked really good last night and I’m glad I stuck to the “he wasn’t getting a fair shake” wagon. I think he can be a very serviceable d-man for this team.

yeah last season it was mostly his giveaways and terrible decisions to pinch that made him infuriating. he cut down on both this season and was pretty good given his style of game. He doesn’t pull himself out of position to make a big hit all the time like he did before, yet he still crunches forward silly enough to try to pass him along the boards.

funny that
in a story supposedly about the Kessel trade being good for the Leafs it’s mostly about how long it’s been since the Leafs had a league leader in scoring, and how the Leafs were the last Original Six club to have a 50 goal scorer, and how Tyler Seguin is “turning out to be a pretty fair player in his own right”.
I guess the Kessel trade was only good for the Leafs because they’re the Leafs and are so terrible that even giving up a “pretty fair” player that wasn’t even drafted at the time is a good thing. :S

Good News Everyone!
For too many years the Phil Kessel page at Hockey Reference has been sponsored by noted Bruins fan and Kessel underrappreciator, Cornelius Hardenburgh. His reign of terror has come to an end!
I took it upon myself to sponsor the page on behalf of Leafs’ fans, and Kessel lovers everywhere!
YAAAAAAY!!!!!
The sponsorship allows us a to post a message. The one there now is a placeholder until we decide on a fitting tribute to Phil.
So I have two requests.
The sponsorship was not free. I have already pledged $20 dollars, as has Chemmy. So I need your help in recouping the remaining $44. You can send me the money via paypal in whatever amount you can. Go here and send whatever amount to dpatrickgray@hotmail.com. Mark it as a gift.
Second. Respond with your suggested entry for Kessel’s page. We’ll either vote using recs or we’ll pick the one we like best. It can be changed throughout the year as well.
As of now you have to beat: They picked him last. So he became a god.

Gardiner isn’t all that irresponsible either – sure he makes a bad decision once in a while, but he’s generally solid.

Yeah he’s a strong dude. Someone was saying on twitter last night that he’s one of the only players they know of that actual hits people while HE has the puck.
If he can keep developing it that would be awesome, but he definitely doesn’t look physically outmatched against NHLers.
Not at all, that and the injury to Kadri are why he is up here, despite some offensive struggles early on. He is totally physically ready for the NHL, and his defensive game is good. Looks like now we’re seeing some offensive flair as well.

NHL quality shot, more than adequate skating as well. Seems to be the kind of player that’s versatile enough to fill in throughout the lineup where needed.

Frattin has been more than adequate but the goals weren’t coming. We’ve seen Kadri produce at the NHL level before. It’s not moronic to want to see him with the team.
Anyway, hopefully the last couple games (along with playing beside Colborne) gets him going so we don’t need to worry about calling Kadri up.

Scrivens
Anderson
Varlamov

his SH SV% is .817 (57th), but bear in mind that Reimer’s is .808 (3SA). The PK has gone 10/11 in his last two games, part of the reason why his SV% is probably on the rise.

True. He hadn’t played in 9 months, and was put into a buzzsaw where he faced 43 shots against the defending Cup champions.
Gus’s main problems are: even in good games, he has a tendency to let weak goals in, and that he loses confidence easily. In the Florida game, for example, he made a stupid mistake leading to a Florida goal, and lets in a softie 15 seconds later.
Those are my main issues with Gus.

He’s still under .900 on the season, even after his two best games. They were also both games in which he was spotted a big lead and had the team playing more defensively in front of him. That being said, he’s done a good job in his past two starts, and I think like everyone else I’m hoping this is something he can build on moving forward. I’ll be willing to admit that he may be a passable NHL goalie if he can get his career SV% up above .905.

Love me some narrative
Gus’ save on Lecavalier on that 2-on-1, when the Leafs were up 1-0, was “timely”. Otherwise it’s tied, early in the game. Might as well be 0-0, strategies change, maybe the Leafs never go on to romp Ol Man Roloson (get off my lawn). He made at least one unbelievable save when the game was still close.
Also, your comment read like a score effect thingy – team playing defensive. But I hear ya – Unbeatable Gus would be nice in the third period of a 1 goal game.

partially, yes.
then again, others have made the point that you’re always playing behind if you give up the first goal, which he often used to do.
lets face it though, the team he’s been playing behind the last 2 games is a much better team than the one he was playing behind last november, or the one before it. Or even the team we saw in Boston this season. I’ve always been arguing that as goes the team play, so goes the goaltending, not just vise versa. We may be seeing a bit of that here.

Zdeno Chara (current #2 defenseman in voting; former Sen, current captain of a divisional rival)

Just a reminder that the Leafs have yet to go more than two games in a row this season without getting at least a point.
Longest losing streak was 3 games (OTT, PHX, NSH) and the second game of those was a shootout loss.

It was funny the other night when I was watching the “Crosby comeback” on Versus. Since both CBC and VS were covering the game McGuire and Healy were constantly jockeying for position in that little nook between the benches. The VS announcers when talking to Pierre would just refer to Healy as “the other guy in there with you”. I was like “yes, he doesn’t deserve to even be mentioned by name.”

They’re a poor possession team, and were a bad one last year, at least according to their Corsi (FUCK BUFFALO!) and Fenwick percentages anyway.
How they are this bad with Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan, and a few others on the team, I don’t know. Maybe it’s just those few, plus Hiller, and nothing else?

Yeah, many of them are off to slow starts. Getzlaf, Perry, and Ryan are all below their career shooting percentage.

Burtch'd!
Getzlaf and Perry have (5v5) PDOs of 966 and 967, respectively, and Bobby Ryan has a PDO of 985. Out of the 19 Anaheim players that have had at least 10 GP so far this season, only 4 of them (Parros, Hagman, Brookbank, and Cogliano) have a PDO > 1000. The highest below that is Teemu Selanne at 990.
It looks to me that almost the entire team is off to a slow start.

After last night I was really excited
JP and I were texting about how we are second in the East, first in the NE, and have an even goal differential with 70 for and against.
Unfortunately I was just glancing through some stuff and I realized we are not actually even on goal differential. If you look at their results and total their GF and GA, you will see that the 70 GF and 70 GA include a goal given to the team for winning in the shootout. The amount of goals this team has actually scored and let in in regulation and OT is 68 for and 69 against.

In case anyone hasn't heard...
There is a proposed plan to maybe consider possibly building a 19,500 seater arena in Markham. The plan is apparently in the works regardless of whether they’d have an NHL tenant.
If that’s true (which I doubt) I was thinking that it would be cool if they built the arena as the home rink of Hockey Canada, you know, Wembly Stadium styles. That’d be neat.
by Kessel'sOversizedSuit on Nov 23, 2011 2:30 PM EST reply actions
I agree that would be cool
But i doubt the rest of Canada would be cool with never being able to see the national team play because every game is in Markham Ontario.
Bit easier in England cuz even the furthest north up by Scotland is only a 6ish hour drive to London
No one cares about Western Canada’s feelings so the only people you’d have to appease would be Quebec.

It’s not as if they would only play there, but they would have tryouts and practices and exhibition games, maybe some tournaments would be there, but it’s not as if the WC or WJHC or Women’s tournaments and stuff would exclusively be held in that stadium anytime they are in Canada. BMO Field is technically the “home field” for Canada’s soccer teams, but they play games in Montreal.
Flugenweb, space code, twit zone, ass mode, check ze tweets.

I was more comparing it to Football in England where Wembley is the only place that England plays their games
