Wow

Seven 3-point games last night.

Six of those games had a team from the East involved.

Three teams from our division picked up at least a point.

Horrible night for the Leafs and they didn’t even play.

Shootouts are fucking stupid and calling them a “win” is to belittle what a win actually is.

10 minutes of 4on4 OT. 2 points for a win, 0 for a loss. If at the end of that two teams are tied, each gets one point. Fuck.

by samspade on Nov 24, 2011 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

5 minutes of 4 on 4 is not enough. I personally liked the 3 minutes 3-on-3 that was considered…but I just want less shootouts. We won’t get rid of them now, but they shouldnt determine 50+% of OT games.

How does 3 on 3 solve the problem of more shootouts? As long as the point structure stays the same teams will send out 2 defenceman

Agreed

I’ve never liked the shootout and I always thought that 5 minutes of overtime is not enough. I’d definitely go for 10 minute overtime and none of this overtime loss point crap either. Unfortunately though, the NHL will continue with the shootouts because they think that’s what the fans want to see.

I’m okay with a point for an overtime loss, I just don’t like an EXTRA point. In other words, I’d be okay with 3 points for a regulation win, 2 for an OT win and 1 for an OT loss. Just keep the number of points available in a season constant!

by MapleLeafMole on Nov 24, 2011 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

many people would like ties, but I’m going to have to say it: they aren’t coming back. 0% chance. The NHL doesn’t backtrack very often on stupid policies (I personally hate the trapezoid the way it is currently implemented) and they wont alter this major aspect of the game. Sure, hockey fans know sometimes neither team deserves a win. But when you try to sell it to the US, you need ACTION! GOALS! MORE ACTION!!!!. So a shootout addition was inevitable, and won’t be taken back.

by Goosemonster on Nov 24, 2011 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again.

The system should be changed to “1 point each if still tied after OT, and shootout wins becomes a tiebreaker like GF/GA”.

Keep the shootout as some people like it.
Remove the “points in the standings” impact of a one-on-one contest from a team sport.

This space for rant...

This.

Go to a real 3 point system.

Win in reg = 3points.
Lose in reg=0points
Win in OT or Shootout=2points
Lose in OT=1point

The real reason for this shitty system is it keeps teams in the playoff picture longer. The races are tighter. Just look at the east standings now. As much as we hate it the casual fan loves to glance at the sports pages and think his team still has a shot of making the playoffs with a month to go.

by samspade on Nov 24, 2011 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

We forget that when this OT/SO thing came around, no one thought a team that pulls off a tie should lose that point if a team eventually loses in OT or via a shootout. Hence the term, extra point. The way the system is now ensure “parity” in the league and bunches up teams closer than they would be if it not for that bonus point….and that’s where I have a beef with the current system: some games are worth 2 points and some are worth 3. Is that right?

Get a chance to have the ball on offense in playoff OT, even if the first team on offense scores a field goal. Regular season is still sudden death. Only exceptions to this in playoffs is if the first team on offence scores a TD. Then game over. Also, if the defense forces a safety or brings back a turnover for any score.

Nothing is perfect, but deciding a game-and possibly playoff spots – witha shootout is crazy. And how does doling out a point to the team who ‘played well but lost’ make any sense?

It’s not like they have to go catch a plane like you or I. Every team has a chartered plane. They can leave virtually whenever they want.

Maybe adding the possibility of multiple OT games to the regular season would stop the schedule makers from being such dickwads like how they’ll give a team a full week off when the season is three days old and then schedule seven games in eleven days later on.

I’d think it’d be pretty tough to stomach losing a player in the second OT of a regular season game. Look at how many games went to OT last night, you would could be playing the equivalent of a few whole games by season’s end.

Under the current points system, it would not be feasible.

If they changed the points system where there was a significant reward for winning in regulation maybe so many games don’t go to OT.

You used to see it all the time before the shootout. Especially when a lesser team managed to be tied in the 3rd in a game they should be losing. They played not to win rather not to lose that point.

In the playoffs, it’s one thing, since both teams are generally on the same footing, and there’s a break between series. But, imagine if Toronto took Washington to triple OT and had to play Carolina less than 24 hours later.

I doubt the schedule makers would care.

Not a huge deal, and no, it’s not going to affect my life, I just think it’s silly for the schedule to be completely dark tonight because that does hurt the game in Canada – no hockey highlights on the morning loop tomorrow, fewer hockey stories in the MSM, that sort of thing.

I just find it funny that the Ebersol can flex out a boring Colts game and the ratings go up, whereas he backs Sid over a Bruins/Habs game and forces the Bostonians to say, “Crosby? That’s wicked lame. I’m watching the Pats.”

You also have to realize that with any NHL games on the league offices have to be open with people watching the games etc. Even if it’s just Canadian teams playing a whole bunch of Americans would be affected by it.

Lupul’s first game back came on Dec. 5 of last year, and it was a difficult transition given the weight he had lost (nearly 30 pounds) and time he had missed.

"I was a bit nervous," he recalled. "It almost felt like my first game in the NHL. I wasn’t sure how I was going to perform. When I got back in Anaheim, I didn’t really feel like I had a spot on the team. After being out so long, other guys step in, the coach becomes confident in other players, and it was a tough situation altogether.

Anaheim 1-8-3 in its last 12. Guess they could use a guy like Lupul now….

I actually like the shootout, just hate the “Ghost Point” that comes from OT or SOL. I’ve been to a few shootout games in person and it’s really tense and exciting, and even at home it gets you on the edge of your seat (my g/f won’t watch shootouts due to them being too intense). Personally I hate losing in OT a lot worse than in the shootout; the shootout kind of makes it feel like losing in actual OT is due to a screw up.

Flugenweb, space code, twit zone, ass mode, check ze tweets.

by Shield on Nov 24, 2011 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, and it’s especially pointless to vote for guys like Kessel and Alfredsson, whose spots are already assured.

If Alfredsson finishes top-3 among forwards, then he actually hurts the chances of guys like Spezza and Michalek, whereas voting for the latter pair would, in my opinion, not harm Alfie’s odds of being named Captain.

Staal finished 18th among forwards last year, while Lidstrom also finished out of the voting at 3rd.

This year’s captains are going to be Alfredsson and Selanne. Kessel is as assured a spot as 7th-place Ovechkin was last year. Or 4th-place Stamkos.

If I cared enough to vote, my ballot would leave off Alfredsson and Karlsson, simply because I think them locks. Same goes for Kessel. Leafs fans might want to get Lupul into the starting three forwards, lest Shanahn not find room for him.

Remember that there are only really 12 wild card invitations and Ottawa probably has at least one of them locked up. The other 30 spots will go to the best player on each team.

Not sure how I would handicap it, but you gotta think the league would pay him the honour. A year ago, people thought Lidstrom might be on his farewell tour.

Plus, Selanne is from the West.

But other possible candidates would seem to be Kessel (because he got picked last and is now the top scorer), a Sedin (to see if he picks his brother), boring old Lidstrom again, or even someone with charisma, like Pat Kane.

And Alfredsson may even get snubbed in favour of Spezza as captain, but my money’s on the two old timey Euros.

I think the point of the vote is to lure fans to the NHL page and gain ad revenue. For the fans I guess the only real benefit is so the team hosting the event can stuff the box with their own players.

Not to mention that by telling people to vote 90 times, they can end up with a 6-digit tally for all players.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Nov 25, 2011 2:32 AM EST up reply actions

In all honesty I think Phaneuf may be more likely than Lupul to go to the All-Star game. Tied for 5th among defencemen in scoring at the moment, 7th in TOI (4th in the Eastern Conference), and a much bigger name.

Plus teams have some say in who gets to go the game, and I would not be at all surprised if Burke wants Phaneuf at the game because he’s the team’s captain.

Good points. I would just suggest that being 5th-7th among blueliners is an easier snub to make, given that only 12 defencemen get named. If Lupul is 3rd in scoring, say, then it would be a snub of Savardian levels to leave him off the top-24 list.

Though if your small market US team doesn’t have anyone worthy of an All-Star spot, chances are they’re quite short on fans anyways.

I know he has basically no chance at winning it, but I hope Gardiner gets a look by the end of the year, maybe even a runner up (unlikely).

While he is only 7th in TOI/GP for a rookie, removal of his first two games (where he played under 14:00 in both) jumps him up to fourth. As well he is number 2 in points by a rookie dman. Again I don’t think there is any way he gets it, but it would be nice if he gets talked about at the end of the year, the way Carlson was last year.

Right, but do we actually still have a lot of old guys coming over who would actually be in contention for the Calder? Most of the older European free agents that come over with a lot of hype turn out to be replacement-level players, at best (see Brunnstrom, Gustavsson). Between the lack of repressive regimes keeping athletes from defecting to the West and the increased focus on European scouting, it seems like most potential Calder contenders are being identified and brought to North America early on in their development.

Maybe I shouldn’t say that they ought to do away with the age limit; it’s more that I don’t think there’s a need for it. Leaving it in place doesn’t hurt.

Its probably the smart move with a concussion. Between making sure his brain is healed and making sure his conditioning is back (after a while with no practice because of said concussion), you want to take it slow. Don’t need a relapse. Its just hard to wait. We need him.

#Isles news: Blake Comeau has been placed on waivers.

$2.5m cap hit, picking him up would cost half of that I believe.

Wow. Couldn't find ANY trade takers. Unreal.

I’d grab him on previous stats alone. 25 years old. Of course Leafs don’t have $2.5M in space.

It's not just his last two starts

season: .898
last 10: .904
last 9: .910
last 8: .916
last 7: .913
last 6: .912
last 5: .915
last 4: .927
last 3: .944
last 2: .971

So basically, if you throw out the first game of the year, he’s >.900. Throw out just half of another game and he’s .910.

Honestly, I thought people were going to be flipping their shit if Gus was .910. The fact that he’s one shitty game against Boston and a relief start away from that (not to mention .927 over his last 4 and .915 over his last 5) should make people pretty satisfied I think.

I’m pretty happy with him at this point, but he’s on such a short leash with the fans and the PPP community that another bad start could destroy that happiness and replace it with anger.

Those numbers, some would argue, are just his ‘lucky’ games. Before the last 2, his average for the season was .877.

I’ll feel more comfortable if he can put out a solid game tomorrow. It doesn’t need to be +.940. But hopefully it’s +.900.

Small sample size. Lots of goalies can put up a SV% of .910 over a stretch of 9 games, and that’s not even league average. If he can get his career SV% up to .910 I’d definitely start to change my opinion on him.

That being said, it’s nice to see that he’s had a bit of consistency lately.

that’s more my point than anything else. I’m well aware of the limits of the sample size (it’s only one season after all). I’m trying to dispel the idea that he’s been a horrible goaltender this year. A few games of .960 hockey sure help a lot. But overall I don’t think he’s been that bad this season.

Unfortunately, Leafs need better than “not that bad” to be competitive.

They need “pretty fucking awesome”

So far, Gustavsson has 6 wins

Last season, that was all he had.

Frankly I’m rooting for the guy, but be sure to put Scrivens back in if goose falls off the rails.

makes sense. The world’s supposed to end in December of next year which is just about the time the parades will be wrapping up when we win in June

Does anybody feel like, when the Leafs finally win a cup, they will be walking around with a smug, shit eating grin on their face until the next season starts? I kind of think it will similar to a “Golden Age” in Civilization, with each Leafs fan going through their own.

I take that back. The Riders have won two Grey Cups in my lifetime so I guess there’s that for family appropriate moments too

I don’t care if the Leafs walk around smug but I know I sure will. I will even wear a billboard with something like XXXX year HAR HAR LAFFS on it in huge letters.

I actually didn’t mean “the Leafs”, I meant to mean like us, the fans. It probably should have read “…cup, Leafs fans will be…”

Apparently there was some moron in the hot tub at my friends’ building yesterday with a Tattoo for the Bruins cup win on his arm, like the logo and “Stanley Cup Champions 2011” or something. I don’t know if a fan should go that far unless maybe you were actually at the game.
