the good: they played so damn good, they deserved at least a point or two.
the bad: their PK is so bad they didn’t deserve the full two points.

how can a PK be this bad for so long (years?)? for the love o’ Reimer

In the last three games the leafs have given up 2 even strength goals (and one was in OT 4 on 4 loss from NJ). That is two ES goals in 3 games between Reimer and Monster. And 6 periods of shutout hockey from Reimer ignoring the OT loss to NJ.

The thing is we’re taking more PKs than we usually do. 6 times in the last ten games the Leafs have been shorthanded 5 or more times.

Also the leafs score every fifth PP and give up a goal every fourth PK so if the refs call even penalties, the leafs cannot win the special teams game.

by jeffgm on Dec 10, 2011 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

The average PK in league gives up a goal every 6 PK and based on the penalities the leaf take per game this comes out to 0.5 extra goal per game beyond the average.

by jeffgm on Dec 10, 2011 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Van Ryn did a good analysis on PK versus goaltending. A better ES goalie should also be a better SH goalie so if PK SV% is low chances are the problem is more on the PK.

by jeffgm on Dec 10, 2011 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Reimer is .934 at even strength (21st, and if we take away the top 4 due to 3SA he’s 17th) and .766 on the PK. That discrepancy is huge, but could also be due to small sample size. We need to stop taking penalties

by sportsfan2 on Dec 10, 2011 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t understand the implication of this stat. Like does that mean he suddenly becomes a shitty goalie on the PK? I think it’s more of a fluke than anything, a small sample size, and an obvious decrease in PK SV% that will occur. This may say more about the state of the Leafs PK as a whole rather than a ridiculously small sample of shots.

by scott tubbesing on Dec 10, 2011 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Right, I’m not trying to take shots at Reimer. But the bottom line is, our PK is awful and it has been for 3+ years. We need to be more disciplined

Sigh. I’m not actually blaming him on most of those. Last night’s game was so frustrating because they absolutely played well enough to win in all other aspects. You know something has gone awry when a defenceman scores a hat trick against you.

by pevans on Dec 10, 2011 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

The issue is that goalies who spend more time on the PK will have a worse overall SVP. A guy who has a .920 overall with 300 times shorthanded is more impressive than a guy who has a .920 with 200 times shorthanded. So, when comparing goaltenders, it’s most effective to compare them at even strength, and treat their PK SVP separately.

Based on last years overall # (ES/PP/PK) and suspect to human recording error
<15ft 15 to 30 >30ft
Reimer 0.854 0.863 0.944
Monster 0.771 0.877 0.919
Giggy 0.810 0.855 0.922
Average 0.813 .879 0.947
Best 0.870 0.927 0.977

If you believe last years numbers then the best probability to score on Reimer is on point and slot shots. Jonas is also below average on those shots and was very poor up close (probably poor rebound control) based on last years data. I don’t think we can conclude definitely if this is an “allaire” system issue (as all of monster/reimer/giggy) had the 15 to 30ft below average save %) or a general PK issue.

Misses the game as I was at the knights. I hear the third period was nuts though. Saw the worst make up call ever last night in London. Pete’s down 4-2 and get a powerplay with four minutes left on a bad call. Two Pete players skate down the middle to enter the Knights zone when a Knights defenseman steps up to hit the one with the puck. He misses and hits the second guy trailing the luck carrier. The Pete’s puck carrier now has an open lane to the front of the net when the play is whistled down. Interference call against the second Pete that got hit. So awful.

by JaredFromLondon on Dec 10, 2011 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

I don't want the leafs to change their game

They just need some adjustments. Such as:

-Kessel not potting the open-netter

The last thing I want to do is change Kessel’s game. For a guy in the scoring race, it was incredibly selfless of him, and good on him. He’s even done it right before: On the Loops goal a few games ago, where Kessel had the opportunity to be the last man to touch the puck:
-The puck was definitely going in, it’s practically on the goal line when Kessel arrived
-No opposition to stop it.
-Plenty of time to make a decision.

In the case tonight, kessel has the wide open net, but tries not to take the goal
-The puck is not a sure goal. Even the slightest inkling of uncertainty should = pot it.
-Plenty of opposition around the net
-No time: it’s a quick decision and that’s all you get.

You have to figure if we took that, Toronto scores first. All else being equal, we are tied in the third. Maybe we don’t make dumb penalties out of desperation? Maybe we just keep getting burned on the PK? Whatever the outcome – Take All Open Nets. Settle the nuances at the bar.

Dumb Penalties

Some of the calls we deserved that night were not called – that makes me angry. Specifically, the third period, where Gardiner is hauled down at the feet and immediately a bad wave on an Icing. Some of the calls were real softies – Gardiner’s one handed tap on Semin’s stick snaps it like a piece of glass. By today’s standard – Slashing. Luke Schenn gets 2 for roughing, when Chimera started it. By the book, it’s an offsetting roughing minor. Can’t do much about that.

Which brings me to Joey Crabb

We are behind by one, two minutes left, when Crabb delivers an offensive zone hit that arrived later than a TTC bus at rush hour. It comes straight to the opponent’s back. The puck is in another area code . We don’t even have any support for Crabb remaining in the zone.

I thought there might have been some sort of altercation that may have remotely justified taking that check, but there wasn’t one. The puck is dished off near the blue line as Crabb reaches the faceoff circle – by the time Crabb makes contact the opposite wing has the puck.

Colby Armstrong’s high stick after the whistle was no gem either. Nor was the Too Much Man – 9 leafs on the ice at once.

There has been bad officiating for our last three games. The last thing you want to do is take calls so blatant, so obvious, the refs have no choice. There are more tactful and sneaky ways to piss people off. Perhaps we should claim Avery off waivers the next time he’s sent down, because Crabb needs a condensed training course on antagonizing.

Penalty Kill.

Enough has been said on how this has been a weakness. We need to fix it. But I’m having trouble laying the finger on Reimer. Reimer got hosed by his team on the PK. Two of the PK goals went off Steckel and that’s really unlucky – but blown coverage is always blown coverage and needs to be fixed.

I think there was one goal on the blocker-side Reimer might have been able to stop, but he had no chance on the rest.

He especially had no chance on the goal where he makes a 10/10 save, and accidentally knocks it in.

Positives:
-Reimer rocked Even Strength and shut down Ovie all night. When Ovie beat Dion with speed, Reimer made a big save. When Ovie didn’t beat Dion with speed, he was thrown off the puck rag-doll style.

-In terms of possession, we had a clear advantage. In terms of attempts, we had a clearer advantage.

-Our feet were moving for the majority of the game. Individual contests were won mostly by the leafs’ speed, because we were on the opponents before they had a play available.

-Franson can shoot. Having long guns at all 3 defensive pairings is awesome.

That’s all I got. Back to studying

by BubbaLou on Dec 10, 2011 11:22 AM EST reply actions

if the puck is going in slowly, you smack it in as fast as you can, it isnt being selfish guaranteeing your team a goal, what if the goalie or defenseman gets a stick on it before it crosses the line? it is a chance you cant take, Kessel flubbed it but did nothing wrong

Reimer’s save percentage is sub 0.900 (0.896). Gustavsson’s is 0.901. The best goalie the Leafs’ have iced this year is Scrivens with a whopping 0.904.

“we” don’t ruin a great production year from Kessel/Lupul/ because of inexperienced goaltending.

Although, Gus has been really amazing lately. I wanna live and die with Reimer but i don’t know man. Do the analysis guys say Gus is trending up? looks like it.

Like the Raycrap year? We were so damn good offensively that year. I said it in the spring, that if we didn’t target an experienced 1b goaltender in the summer we would regret it.

Reimer still could be a flash in the pan.

The thing that gives me some reassurance is the fact his ES SV% is still quite good. 21st in the league, and 15th among goalies who have seen more than 70 shots. The PK is absolutely destroying his SV%

perhaps the best news this year is that Gus has improved enough of late that a team may be willing to take him back in a trade. If Reimer doesn’t look like he’s regaining his form from last season soon, we need to find a viable #1 goalie.

PK excluded the leafs are currently playing well. Reimer or Monster can do more on the PK and so must the rest of the PK unit.

That is, 43% (6 of their 14) regulation or OT losses are in part due to PK goals allowed during those game. And another 7 of those 14 losses had a 3 or more goal differential.

by jeffgm on Dec 10, 2011 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

Gus has actually been pretty good on the PK lately. He’s given up 4 on the PK in his last 8 games. I’m too lazy to look up how many opportunities that was, or what the SV% over those 8 games, but I suspect we’ve averaged about 3/game over that stretch. It’s a huge improvement.

Move along. Nothing to see here...

Neither goalie is outperforming the other to deserve the starting role; nor poorly enough to get pulled. They probably deserve to play tandem until a starter emerges , but I can understand going with Reimer as the starter for reasons of age, contract and last year performance.

by jeffgm on Dec 10, 2011 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

There are a few back-to-backs coming up, so we’ll see both goalies soon enough. Reimer probably gets the start on Tuesday. If he plays badly, and Gus plays well on the front end of the b2b, it could change the upcoming starts after that.

but Reimer you just gotta be starting Reimer for now….

Move along. Nothing to see here...

I don’t know. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect other teams to rebuild the same way the Leafs had. The Leafs relied on some incredible asset management on behalf of Burke and some downright stupidity from other GMs. Beauchemin for Lupul and Gardiner?! Phaneuf for IDon’tEvenRememberWho?! Kaberle for Colborne/Biggs/Liles/Plus?!

You can’t rely on those kinds of trades happening. In the same way Edmonton has been lucky getting 2 straight 1st overall picks, we’ve been lucky to be on the good end of those deals.

Exactly. They should set up a system where its a complete lottery for the teams outside of the playoffs. Completely get rid of tanking. All 14 teams can end up in any position. If you want give slightly better odds to the worst teams. Like bottom 3 pick 3 balls and get to keep the best one, than next 3 pick 2 and keep the best one. Finally the rest just get randomly assorted.

I have no problem with a crappy team going into a proper rebuild (ie a GM trades away older players for picks/prospects). What I don’t like is a team not trying to win every damn game they have. No Leafs fan should ever be upset that we won a game, which we are about winning the last game of the 2008-2009 when whats his face scored his hat trick costing us a top 5 pick. That is stupid. There should not be an incentive to lose.

Yeah, exactly. Though I like the Oilers so my bias comes out there.

And agreed on the system that rewards losing. It’s a system that encourages teams to tank later in the season to get a better pick.

My solution would be to tier the lottery- the 5-7 worst teams in the league all get an equal chance at the No. 1 pick.

by FiftyMissionCap on Dec 10, 2011 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

The problem there is you could still have team #6 (worst) try to tank. But yeah that would probably be best.

They could honestly just do a lottery for every spot for every team not in the playoffs. Give slightly better odds the worst you were, but allow every team a shot at every spot.

Well, some crappy teams are crappier than others, so no one will realistically accept a straight up lottery. The tiered system at least separates the 14 non-playoff teams into ‘sub-par’ and ‘really, really shitty’.

Do two lotteries: 1-7 have one lottery, equal chance, for the top 7 picks. 8-14 have another, equal chance, for the next 7. The 14th-worst team may not get a shot at no. 1 but under the current system, the best pick they’d get is No. 10. Now, they have an even better shot at No. 8.

I think more teams would be more likely to accept a two-tiered lottery, since everyone but the 2 or 3 shittiest teams in the league benefit from the change, and it still keeps them happier than a straight up lottery.

Even then I’m not sure it’s a bad strategy. The biggest flaw is the system. However, with the salary cap, there should be enough parity that we don’t need to do rankings-based lotteries.

If it wasn’t in Buffalo, I wouldn’t be, but since it is…

As for Vancouver, they’re getting their legs back, and while they’re nothing special at ES, they have a killer PP. If our PK is even half as bad as last night, the Canucks will eat us alive. And Hughson will probably blow a load in the booth.

Even so, won last 8 of 9.

Frustrating. Part of the reason Vancouver’s had our number for so long is we always seem to catch them during their hot streaks.

Twice. And it’s sort of a sore spot for me because I lived in BC for 5 years during this time period and never hear the end of it every time the Canucks win.

Discipline is the key. The Canucks don’t scare me anywhere near as much 5-on-5. If last night’s game is an indicator, we can keep up, if not dominate, play at evens. Not to mention Reimer is still .923 at ES.
