Agreed - time to move on. Vancouver is a pretty good hockey club.
Though just once, I’d like to see the Leafs do well in a back-to-back. They just don’t have the energy for it.

I think they do do some things well
like they put in lots of effort on most nights.
It’s rare that I say they didn’t try at all.
My problem with youth is that defensive assignments, and knowing what to do in what situation with and without the puck is something that comes with experience… and the Leafs lack that.

perhaps. but do we have examples of ‘experienced’ NHLers who are similarly falling short in those areas? if so, then it doesn’t support the cause-effect relationship.
I get that Experience is valuable. but so is coaching. how do we disentangle the two?

I'm saying we can't
and I get that coaching is important too, but I think sometimes the experience factor is what we’re all waiting on.
Obviously players who are younger make more mistakes – for example the Gardiner/Schenn pairing is victimized pretty regularly for thinking they can do more than they can (i.e. Gardiner skating the puck up ice and having his pocket picked in his own zone)… it just comes with experience knowing when and what you can do things.

IDK
Three games in four nights. The first period was all out exciting, and then you could see in the first few moments of the 2nd where the legs just left them. They didn’t really come on until the last 5min of the third or so.
I bet if the first period wasn’t so wide open they would have been better in the later half, but they burned everything in the first 20min.
What, like last month when they swept New Jersey and Columbus? I’d like to see them do it again.

Goaltending has to improve for the leafs to challenge for a playoff spot.

Somebody with access to the old CBC feeds
needs to make a youtube video with clips of Healey’s commentary, followed by words on the screen that hilight what is actually happening.
Like:
Clip of Kessler taking net off, Healey praising the move. Then putting on the screen the text of the rule that makes it still a goal.
Clip of Reimer getting hit, Healey says he’s selling it well. Text of “Reimer stays out with a concussion for 3 months”….
Put together a whole series of those clips, Daily Show style, and I’m betting you’ve got a viral hit on Youtube that would embarrass the hell out of CBC

ha, it’s hilarious how much thought you seem to put into how much money I make. you don’t even know what I do, other than it’s some sort of ambiguous finance-type job on bay street!
I also think people seriously underestimate how much money you need to make to be legitimately well off.

our family car is a CRV. ‘my’ car is the 96 civic my inlaws gave to us when we graduated. I just drive so little I don’t really give a shit what I’m in. although occasionally when I go play private golf courses I start thinking about upgrading the Civic to something a little less ghetto.

This is more about secondary scoring – the goals tonight came off the kessel line.

I actually like ‘em better. I’m a papers guy, hate tests
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
I loved tests in high school. In the final years of uni, though, ‘test’ and ‘exam’ are really just a fancy way of saying ‘multiple handwritten essays.’ I stopped liking tests at that point.
Ya I know what you mean. Then they started giving me “take- home tests” and final papers. Didn’t understand the difference
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
There are pros and cons to each. As an Eng student papers are normally just things that get in the way of studying for other, “more important” courses
elephant shell
never question our ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - yardly
True there are. It depends how your mind works too. I used to just get extensions on papers so i could write them after the exams. They did just get in the way. This semester all I have is final papers and presentations (like 6 of them) so there’s nothing for them to get in the way of.
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
agreed. i took engineering in Uni, nothing but tests / exams. don’t think I wrote a ‘paper’ my entire undergrad.

the only papers I have to write are for courses like Communication, Management, “Professional Engineering” (read: how to be a decent human being in a business setting)

Those are gonna be all BSing right? I took a management class and had to write like 20 pages for my final paper. There was no real content in there
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
The courses are generally “the PEO stipulates that Engineers know how to be rational and have average communication skills while on the job”
Of course, if someone needs a course to teach them that, I don’t know that they should be hired to begin with.
So yeah, no real content. I remember in first year, one of the classes had a lesson on how to do a proper handshake

but I won’t be upset at all if the new Leafs ownership is the first step towards CBC losing HNIC. Their play by play personnel is really slipping and it would be nice to see a fresh approach. As long as I can watch the Leafs most Saturday nights I don’t really care what channel they’re on if the commentary and analysis are tolerable.

So
I find it interesting that the moment the Leafs surrender a few 5v5 goals Dave Feschuk immediately points that out as “the problem”.
Seems sort of weird all this back and forth… it’s the PK… wait no it isn’t… it’s the 5 on 5 miscues… etc.
Anywho… goalies need to be better overall… team D needs to be better overall… make the safe plays etc.

Leafs 100% on the PK against the Canucks?
This is the reason I was completely “meh” about the game last night. Our core problem is the PK, not 5v5… we just played a better team that (shockingly) played better than us.

Ok and I'm just throwing this out here for discussion
I know Schenn and Gardiner are getting lambasted for their D… (I’m fine with doing so)… but I think Schenn’s crappy numbers aren’t made better by playing with a rookie, and if they’re out there a lot with LBK they’ll be facing more chances against.
LBK is NOT a good defensive unit… at all.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
No, I think they were on for at least 3 goals against last night. I think mostly it had to do with staying on too long though, they need to shorten those shifts especially in a back-to-back.
by Goosemonster on Dec 18, 2011 11:48 AM EST up reply actions
I think (based only on observation) that it puts Schenn in a position where he probably feels like he has to do too much, which leads to him chasing the play a lot, blowing coverage and generally being out of position. That’s my take.
by Self Destructive Zones on Dec 18, 2011 11:49 AM EST up reply actions
yeah I agree
but Gardiner and him are both mistake prone, and neither one is aware enough to bail the other guy out effectively.
