Scratch that on Komisarek. Both he and Mike Brown have left before practice gets going.

Kessel still leading the league in even strength points, 31-28.

Also, Kesler, Taylor Hall and RNH all have at least half of their points on the PP. Sedins close to that many.

So, to repeat, Kessel – best 5 v 5 scorer in hockey.

Leafs coach Ron Wilson says he had his contract extension a while ago, but was given the freedom to announce it on his schedule.

So . . . Wilson’s whole Christmas present thing was basically him trolling guys like Cox and Simmons? Amazing.

I’m actually having an interesting exchance with the National Post’s Bruce Arthur about this on Twitter:

bruce_arthur Bruce Arthur
@draglikepull You wouldn’t [enjoy this] if you were a Leafs writer trying to have Christmas morning with your kids. I know of one. Which is why I didn’t like it. Wilson had to know it could happen. Didn’t give a shit.

It goes on from there, with a bunch of people chiming in. I have to say that Bruce does make a pretty good point.

wah. I missed so many Christmases with my dad because of his job and he never complained. work around it or go find a job with an easier schedule.

August 18th is National Chaim Weisswasser day. Celebrate it by buying a new phone.

by elseldo on Dec 26, 2011 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah. He has one of the most enviable jobs I can imagine. You had to work for an hour on Christmas? Oh, but what’s that? You also basically get paid to watch hockey games and then write about them? And what’s that? The writing doesn’t even have to be good? Too bad you’re a sports writer and not a garbage man. Those guys get ALL the breaks.

In the court of public opinion, Steve Simmons is Lionel Hutz.

I’m not sure “some people have it worse, so you don’t get to complain about anything ever” is a valid defense.

You're right, it's not neccesarily the best argument, but....

In this case it definitely is pretty valid. I have zero sympathy for the guy.

by J-DUBZ on Dec 26, 2011 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Regardless of your job, it sucks to be called in on an off-day that you were spending with your family. Your family doesn’t somehow become less important because you’ve got an interesting job.

Anyway, I’m not saying it’s the worst thing that’s ever happenned, and I think some of the blame in this kind of situation falls on the editor who decides his outlet absolutely has to report on the story immediately, but I can sympathise with someone who isn’t pleased to lose time with their family.

He can sulk and whine about it to his family all he wants.

I just think once he starts trolling fans about it then it shows he lacks a bit of perspective.

by J-DUBZ on Dec 26, 2011 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Are we on the same page here? I’m not sure who you think was trolling the fans. Arthur was responding directly to something I said, and we had a respectful discussion about it.

Fair enough

I may be misreading into this then.
I guess I just don’t think the point he’s making is that good, but I’ll leave it at that.

by J-DUBZ on Dec 26, 2011 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you that it sucks to be called away from your family, but this isn’t some obscure thing. When you are a reporter you have tied your life to the news. If something happens you have to deal with it. If he wants a life that is more structured get a 9-5 job.

There is some truth in this: I don’t think any reporters complained about that Christmas/Boxing Day tsunami a few years back. “Darn you, mother nature! Why couldn’t you wait until after the holidays!”

Also, it’s not as if 100 million articles discussing the pros and cons of an extension hadn’t already been written. The column practically writes itself. I’m waiting, in fact, for the first article that tries to link the Leafs’ poor December with Wilson’s extension being agreed ‘some time ago.’ OMG, he stopped coaching well because he got job security again!

by MrSmithy on Dec 27, 2011 1:39 AM EST up reply actions

It’s not, but I’m not defending anything. I’m just explaining why I have 0 sympathy for Arthur. Wilson may have been being a dick in posting that Christmas morning, but it’s Arthur’s indignation at having to string together 5 sentences and make a phone call that I find galling. It’s the “You wouldn’t like it if you were a Leafs writer” bit. Pretty sure I’d love it, Bruce.

In the court of public opinion, Steve Simmons is Lionel Hutz.

by The Bag on Dec 26, 2011 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

To be clear, Bruce Arthur made the remark on behalf of another reporter, not himself.

Ahhh.

This makes more sense now.

by J-DUBZ on Dec 26, 2011 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, that whole context thing. That makes the “I know of one” a whole lot less irritating. Thought he was referring to himself in an awkward way.

I still don’t feel totally sympathetic, and still find Arthur’s indignation silly, but…if it’s on behalf of someone else, I guess it’s not as irritating?

by Chuck Diesel on Dec 26, 2011 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, news happens on Christmas. But it was also a dick move on Wilson’s part. I guess it boils down to whether or not you hate the Leafs beat writers enough to care…

(FTR, I don’t really hate them, per se, I just think the print columnists—Cox, Simmons, Berger—should’ve been retired.)

But it was also a dick move on Wilson’s part.

Really how so and I know that more than one person thinks this. As a fan I was happy to hear that on christmas day, what’s the problem here and why should I care if his announcement inconvenienced someone maybe if for only realistically a small part of a day?
Please.

To be honest

He probably just did it because he thought it was a funny/cute way to announce his extension. I don’t think he had this evil plan to ruin reporters’ days with their family.

I would think/hope that Wilson understands the absurd media fishbowl he’s in, so this is either an inept news dump attempt (the “Friday after 4pm press release” strategy) or a “fuck you” to beat writers.

I don’t think Wilson goes in for the funny/cute thing that much.

Did anyone write more than 250 words on Wilson’s extension yesterday? Did anyone file anything other than some version of “Wilson tweeted that he got an extension. Leafs front office confirmed this, but did not disclose the term or length.” It was funny, it was lighthearted, and any pressure or inconvenience from or to reporters was likely coming from their paper’s desire to be the first on the issue, not from Wilson’s desire to toy with the media.

Good point or not, bitching about it publicly is not the way to go and appears very unprofessional.

Now, I don’t deal with Ron Wilson every day, but I really don’t think that he calculates who he can butthurt with every single tweet before he posts it.

Do something else if this job’s hours don’t suit you Mr. Arthur – I’m sure there’s a long line of people who would gladly do it.

James Reimer’s even strength SV% during his career is .936. Jonas Gustavsson’s is .909. Anyone still want to claim that coaching is the reason for the Leafs’ bad goaltending the past few seasons?

Now to improve Reimer’s .778 4v5 SV% this season.
