Liles Concussed
To the surprise of no one at all John-Michael Liles has been placed on the IR with "concussion like symptoms" after being diagnosed with a "sore neck". If this sounds familiar to you that's because it's exactly what happened earlier this season after Brian Gionta kicked James Reimer in the head.
Liles got crushed by Paul Gaustad on what looks like a pretty clean hit:
This could be a big loss for the Leafs. Liles was tied for 14th in points by a defender with Dion Phaneuf, Michael del Zotto and John Carlson overall, and 10th on the powerplay (tied with Phaneuf, Kris Letang and Duncan Keith). Those are some pretty serious names.
The Leafs need Liles to make a speedy recovery to help the playoff effort or to increase his value for a move at the trade deadline. He's been an excellent use of a late 2nd round pick so far and obviously we here at the blog wish him a speedy recovery.

There doesn’t appear to be any contact with his head. Not from Gaustad’s shoulder and not from hitting the ice. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a concussion from the mechanism of action here? ie: more from the jarring of the neck than from actual contact to the head? Seems like this one might actually be “concussion like symptoms” as described by the team. Kinda like a whiplash effect where after the hit, he would be awfully sore and suffer from headaches for a while.
You just need to jostle the brain, it doesn’t need to be a “direct” impact per se.

Chemmy is completely correct. In this sort of situation the concussion (read damage to the brain) is likely to occur from the brain hitting the inside of the skull when the “whiplash” type movement occurs.

Pretty sure the all-concussion team needed a good puck moving D-man. They can pair him with Weber now.

None. Leafs are fine. Aulie and Franson might pick up more ice time. Maybe Holzer/Blacker get a callup.

I believe it was the case. Tonight, via Siegal:
Lupul Bozak Kessel
Frattin Grabovski Kulemin
MacArthur Connolly Kadri
Boyce Steckel Crabb
Aulie Phaneuf
Gunnarsson Schenn
Gardiner Franson
Reimer
by Goosemonster on Dec 27, 2011 2:38 PM EST up reply actions
Unfortunately it was. Aulie just isn’t good at defence. I don’t know why they keep trying to force it.

Because Aulie-Franson and Aulie-Schenn would be defensively worse pairings.

that’s bullshit. He’s still a young defender, with plenty of time to learn and advance. Has he been great this year? No, but I seem to remember a number of members of this board creaming their pants over him last year. Give him time, he may turn out to be an excellent shut-down guy, and he may not, but assuming he’s a bust now, because of half a season of lack-luster play is crap.

I am trying to find a point in this thread where anyone called Aulie a “bust”
elephant shell
never question our ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - yardly
claiming he’s no good at defence, to me, implies that he is a bust. maybe I’m wrong to infer that from Bower’s post, thats just how I read it.
by JohnerstonRex on Dec 27, 2011 3:06 PM EST up reply actions
the fact is that he isn’t very good right now…nobody is calling him a bust though
I think we’re all willing to be patient with him

Definitely. I think defencemen especially you need to be more patient with.

Aulie just isn’t good at defence/blockquote>
I’m not angry, I just hear this sentiment from a number of different fans, both on PPP and elsewhere. He’s a young kid, give him time to progress. I’d say that if he’s still at this point at the end of next season or the one after that, then thats a vaild comment.
by JohnerstonRex on Dec 27, 2011 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
Well, that was Draglikepull, not me. However, just because he isn’t good at defense now – and he isn’t – doesn’t mean that he never will be, or that he’s suddenly a bust. There’s a reason Drag wrote “isn’t” and not “won’t be.” Right now, I would hate to see him next to a struggling Schenn or a developing Franson. All three of them have problems in the defensive zone.
So it’s a valid comment now. It might also be a valid comment next year – I just hope not.

sorry, I misread who posted the comment. I didn’t mean to imply that I was angry at you. I agree that he hasn’t been great, or even good this year, I just run into the same attitude amongst a large number of leaf fans “so and so isn’t all star quality right now, we should give up on him”
by JohnerstonRex on Dec 27, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions
“Large number of leaf fans” doesn’t usually apply around here. It’s nice, but you’re probably gonna want to avoid jumping to conclusions or expecting people to hold the popular opinion. If it’s a call-in opinion from the Andy Frost show, it’s probably been made fun of here.

Phaneuf/Gunnar has worked reasonably well as a top pairing this season. I’d rather see something like an Aulie/Franson pairing get 12 easy minutes a night than have Aulie get 20 tough minutes. Or, for that matter, send Aulie back down to the Marlies and call up someone like Holzer and see if he can hold the fort on the 3rd pair for a while.

I agree with the first suggestion.
If we assume 48 ES 6 PP and 6 PK minutes per game. I would be happy with
ES
Gunnar-Phaneuf 19
Gardiner-Schenn 16
Aulie-Franson 13
PP
Gardiner-Phaneuf 4
Gunnar-Franson 2
PK
Gunnar-Schenn 4
Aulie-Phaneuf 2
Total TOI:
Phaneuf 25
Gunnar 25 (this is likely ~2 minutes high)
Gardiner 20
Schenn 20
Franson 15 (this is likely a little low)
Aulie 15

I dunno. Gardiner-Schenn hasn’t excelled when it’s been together in the past. I don’t mind the idea of pairing two of our stronger defensive players with two of our weaker ones for depth.

So you would suggest
Aulie-Phaneuf
Gunnar-Schenn
Gardiner-Franson?
I don’t mind that too much. Would want to balance out the ES minutes.

I would suggest it in part because I think that’s what Wilson rolls with (I mean, that’s what we did against the Isles, I believe). I totally get the desire for a shutdown pairing, but I don’t think we can pull it off without another veteran(/defensively reliable) player in the bottom four. And yeah. Gardiner-Franson take the OZone starts and play together on the second power play unit, while we split the defensive responsibilities between GunnarSchenn and Aulie-Phaneuf for whomever is having a better game.

I can accept that. I would just be a little nervous of Aulie Phaneuf. Would almost want to play Aulie-Phaneuf and Gunnar-Schenn for about 16 minutes each and Gunnar-Phaneuf for 4 (when the game is really tight). Obviously wouldn’t work though.

We’re going to be playing Aulie above his head as long as he’s not on the third pairing – he’s gotta step up, and I think (especially given some of the comments that MacArthur and Bozak have said about Wilson) he’ll be given that chance.

A good read, as usual, from “Jonas Siegel”;http://www.tsn.ca/toronto/blogs/jonas_siegel/?id=383557 . Not sure if Mac’s comments are in there, but he’s said something about how Wilson’s confidence in him helped him get out there, develop as a player, etc.

Ouch. That looked completely clean to me. Gaustad’s upper arm (maybe elbow or shoulder) into Liles’ shoulder. It really sucks the way it turned out. Here is hoping for a speedy recovery for Liles. Time for Aulie to prove his stuff.

hopefully this is a short time out, it doesn’t look like too terrible of a hit so with the rest he got over Xmas and Boxing day I hope that leads to only 2 or 3 more missed games.
Does IR in the NHL work like the DL in baseball, is it retroactive, so it counts back to the last game he played and then from there forward?
by WorldSeriesTiger on Dec 27, 2011 4:05 PM EST reply actions
IR is retroactive in hockey (so yes it goes from first game missed to present). There are also two types:
Injured Reserve. You get an extra spot in your roster (normal roster limit is 23 with 3 goalie spots) and it has to be (roughly I don’t remember the exact numbers) at least 9 days or 4 GP
Long Term Injured Reserve. You get an extra spot on your roster and cap relief (if you are at the cap limit you are able to call up one player with up to the cap hit of the player in question). (I am again rough on the number of days but it is roughly:) 23 days or 10 games.

Damn league get your act together and look into making the pads the players wear more impact friendly for fucks sakes. How many players need to be injured before they realize that!
