Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Devils ain't got a prayer

Who: New Jersey Devils (12-12-1; 25pts; 4th in ATL Division) at Toronto Maple Leafs (15-10-2; 32pts; 2nd in NE Division)

What: Game #28 of the Leafs 2011-12 season.

Where: Home sweet Home

When: 7:00pm on SN, MSG

Why: Because Phil Kessel needs some goals, and Brodeur is in net

Star-divide

-The Leafs return home for the second meeting of the season between the Devils and Toronto. The quick turnaround from last night's victory may or may not play a factor. So far this season, the Leafs are 1-2 in back-to-back games.

- The Devils have lost four straight, giving up a combined 17 goals in the process. $100m man Ilya Kovalchuk has only 6 goals and is a -11 so far on the year. Captain Zach Parise, Kovalchuk's linemate, has only 7 goals in an important contract year.

- Martin Brodeur has been worse than Jonas Gustavsson.

-James Reimer, however, is making his first home start since returning from injury. He'll probably score a hat trick tonight.

- Mikhail Grabovski is expected to miss his second straight game due to a family matter. Lines should remain the same from last night.

I think St. Reimer has enough stock with the media that this won’t happen. You get thrown under the bus for bucking the conventional wisdom (no matter how dumb that wisdom might be), not for playing it to its stupid conclusions. That’s why football coaches often make such conservative plays – they won’t be blamed for doing what everyone else would have done.

The only thing that would work against him is the perception that you ride the “hot hand”, but when that’s put up against “play your star always and every time no matter how bruised or tired or incapacitated he may be” I think the latter tends to win.

Somebody said the other day that Schoalts used to be pro-Leafs, but was accused of this and now writes passive-aggressive anti-Leaf stuff. I’ve never seen him write a pro-Leaf article without negative references.

It’s about time for him to write another piece about how rough it is covering a hockey team, and how he hates to travel…blah, blah, blah. He writes one of those at least once a year.

I understand that it can be tiresome, but at the end of the day you have a job that many, many people would love to have. Heck, 10% of the populace doesn’t have any job. Writing an article in the G&M whigning and complaining about your job watching pro-hockey for a living is insulting.

I don’t think it was the writing part, it was the relentless road travel part. If you sit in TO and watch it on your flat screen and then write the same article every week for decades, then I have less sympathy, Mr. Cox.

Mirtle wasn’t doing that at all. He was admiring Jonas Siegel for being so tireless at his work. (Out with the team at the games until 1 am, waking up at 7 am, travelling to every city, etc).

It also wasn’t a published article, but in a talk here.

I’d say about 3-4 years Shoalts was agressively accused of being pro-Leafs. Not sure how much has changed; I haven’t read much of his work recently. I think he used to be the Leafs beat reporter for the Globe. Now Mirtle is that guy. And he gets slagged in the comments section for being pro-Leafs.

I still have no idea why he is on this team, other than he can play on the PK. so what? we got a bunch of Marlies that make good PKers and can actually pot one now and then. Dupuis has only looked dangerous when paired with people way more talented than him (see: Grabovski, Mikhael)

by Goosemonster on Dec 6, 2011 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

So you think we should send him to the Marlies and replace him with someone else who isn’t good except when killing penalties?

by Wan Ihite on Dec 6, 2011 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Zigomanis can kill penalties and provide a hint of offense – at least pressure the other team. Mueller would make a great 3rd liner, and I think Kadri has been playing well enough to earn a shot. Take your pick, I think our PK won’t suffer too much from a lack of Dupuis. Even if you want to keep Dupuis, get rid of Orr from the roster so we can play a young guy in Rosehill/Orr’s place.

by Goosemonster on Dec 6, 2011 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Many, many, many people around here wanted him "no matter cost"

Of course I think they thought the cost would be high cap hit not ridiculously long term.

Honestly though its hilarious how people are blaming him for the teams cap problems. His cap hit is totally appropriate and if anything is quite low. The way he is hurting the team is that he is signed until Jagger Grabovski gets drafted.

In Ontario

All the bars get their kegs fresh.

But because Creemore is non-pasteurized or preserved, the moment that stuff hits room temperature, it’s awful.

We simply have to win this game, even if its not in November when it matters. They’re a worse team, not doing too well, and their goalie has been terrible. Just keep shooting the puck at the net.

by BubbaLou on Dec 6, 2011 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve been condition by years of goaltending failure to believe implosion is near. It’s kind of weird, the fact we haven’t fallen out of the playoff race yet is still a bit shocking. Not that the analysis didn’t show we’re a pretty good team (bubble team), but I think I’ve become an even worse pessimist through years of staying up late watching the leafs get blown out of the water, losing games we had no business losing. Slowly, I’m coming to be optimistic about the team…and even the goaltending. Moderately optimistic.

by Goosemonster on Dec 6, 2011 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

Were playing lots of games. Over 1/2 the conference has games on us.
Thankfully the even if the teams behind us win all theyre games they have on us we dont move down a spot. The more worrying stat are the teams ahead of us who have 2-3 games in hand.

Being a Leafs fan makes me bipolar.

oh yes, but finishing 5th or 6th and surpassing expectations would be nice.

by Goosemonster on Dec 6, 2011 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

I think the stats there reflect what I think I have been seeing. Namely, that Gus looks less scrambly in net and better positioned, which is allowing him to make the routine saves.

That’s really been the core of his problem is the scrambliness… we all know he’ll bust out 1-2 ridiculous saves a game, it’s the un-screened wrist shot from the circle that’s been beating him (due to over-sliding)

by Chi-town leafs on Dec 6, 2011 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

At this points it’s somewhat silly to worry about what place we’re in, the important thing is winning games. This is a winnable game, team needs to have a strong start and play a smart disciplined game.

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate chest protector of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield blocker of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows pucks of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword stick of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And also… helluva glove hand.

II Corinthians
