Kaberle Rumor Zone
Kaberle to Boston rumors are exploding the internet right now.
N.B.: For anything less than our first back I'd prefer to re-sign Kaberle.

Don’t lick your chops too much at the prospect of trading away one of the best defenders to ever wear the blue and white. Thanks.

I just don’t understand what Burke could get back that would replace him. Boston’s not going to trade a current piece, and their first is not going to be that high

I’d love for him to stay, and I’d love for him to resign, but the question in the back of my mind is: what if he doesn’t?
It’s a Ryan Smyth circa 2007 scenario. Risk having him walk as a UFA for nothing, or try to get something in return?
I’d hate to see him go in the worst way possible. That said, I’ve come to terms with it in the way I came to terms with the Jays losing Halladay: all the young talent on D we have to look forward to.

The Bruins’ 1st pick coming back, and that’s about it methinks. No way we get our pick back. And even if we did, you know the Leafs would just go gangbusters and run off a 10 game winning streak.

That’s Burke’s secret plan to make the playoffs.

Absolutely not. Trading within the division means boston has to ante up for the guy they want or they can shove it (except not really because the Kabby holds all the cards oh god I’m scared).

I’d like to see him re-signed as well. Our first or Joe Colburne back if we do make a deal with the Bruins.
I personally would want Tyler "bust" Seguin
but that’s a severe pipe dream.

for a guy who Burke does not intend to re-sign and who has a NTC that he is willing to waive for select teams + a good goalie for a good goalie plus the second best prospect in the Bruins system…..that is a darn good deal and something Burke should probably take if it were real

My guess
Is that Colbourne really isn’t their second best prospect anymore. I think his value has dropped significantly.

that is a fair point but Hodgson has 17 in 30, i’m just saying that Rask would likely be the center point of the deal with Colborne as a secondary, he is supposed to be a playmaking center so his numbers might be skewed depending on Boston’s farm team. Still think the deal proposed is a good one considering the circumstances

by potvin vs hextall on Feb 15, 2011 5:19 PM EST up reply actions
I doubt that they’re buddies because Chara is slovak and Kaberle is czech (not to be racist, but those two nations have loads of history) but Kaberle doesn’t like to shoot… I know he does shoot a lot but if you watch him on the PP he clearly doesn’t like to unload shots.. his best hockey was when he could set up McCabe.. Chara > McCabe.
That’s what I figured.
Don’t worry, it’s not racist if it’s two countries that actually have a lot of bitter history with each other.

At his age Kaberle will want a 5-7 year deal.
A team that is contending might bite the bullet in order to have him while he’s still a force, knowing that they will also be stuck with him when he is over 35.
That kind of deal doesn’t make sense for a team that is hoping to peak in 2-3 years.
I’m assuming here that the only goal is to with the cup.
Kaberle is under 35, he will be under 35 when he signs his new contract, he can retire no fuss no muss
Rule #20
by JaredFromLondon on Feb 15, 2011 5:44 PM EST up reply actions
I just meant he probably won’t want to retire.
In any case, whether he retires in 2-3 years or goes into a decline that iamounts to the same problem for a team that isn’t on the cusp of contending.
any contract like that will probably be front loaded and have a lower cap hit, probably similar to what he has now, which, even if he was only putting up 30ish points still isnt bad for a 36 year old D man

good point. I still can’t see them giving us stuff, but eh, I’m bitter because I don’t want Kabby to go :(
I want to be a Toronto Maple Leaf forever - Phil Kessel
Certified Grabbo lover. GET WELL SOON, SID
The universe moves depending on where Sidney Crosby is on the ice - IHeartPenguins
Looking at their roster I don’t see them competing for the cup this year. They are significantly behind Philly, Vancouver and Detroit. Also behind the Pens if Sid returns to form.
Bruins would crush the pens in a playoff series, even if sid does return
and this is why they need Kaberle so they CAN compete against the Bruins
Thomas and Chara are not geting any younger and the rest of their defence + Rask won’t cut it in the future. they do have a closing window too

you heard me
the bruins defense is SHIT without Chara, Thomas is like 49 and Rask is good, yet unproven.
The bruins current cup push window is closing in a year or two
of course it looks like they probably have another opening up in about 6 years or so, but that’s neither here nor there

Given all the debate about the price he paid for Kessel, and all the attempts to understand why he paid that price, that’s pretty much the last thing I wanted to hear.
Come get your duds in order...
Especially given yesterday’s trade. In a truly sickening way it almost makes sense. He overpays because he doesn’t understand the value in what he’s giving up. This is not at all comforting to here from a GM heading into (continuing to head into?) a rebuild.

not particularly, other than the three of them all playing the best in their careers. Sheer, luck as 09-10 would show
Sheer luck? Not so sure about that. Krejci is on a 65 point pace with, as Shift points out, a very low shooting percentage, while playing with Horton and Lucic.
This is where a witty signature might go.
This is where a witty signature might go on drugs.
i was speaking of Ryder and Wheeler. I think his two linemates now are slight upgrades. But i see where you’re going, he makes his linemates better. Still he struggles to find chemistry with several of our forwards. He was auditioning guys left and right last year, some of this year w/ Savard back
It’s all moot from our perspective. I’ll be shocked if we get Krejci back.
This is where a witty signature might go.
This is where a witty signature might go on drugs.
It looks like his 70-point year might be an outlier (15.1% shooting, career 11%, this season 7.9%)… but yeah, I think he can get the puck to Kessel.
On pace for 65.5 with a low S%. Sounds like a 60-70-point player to me.

Is it unreasonable to think...
That trading Kabby AND re-signing him would be the best thing for the guy? He’s always said that he wants to stay in Toronto, and WIN in Toronto. The Leafs trade him, get back a young center and/or pick, then 2 months later he re-signs with a Leafs team that is considerably better as a result of the trade. He doesn’t have to move out, lives away from home for two months, has a chance at a championship, then comes back for the long term. Could he not be convinced that this is the best course of action for him and his team?
Shameless optimism
I am pretty sure that if the deal is for anything good it hinges on a new contract with whatever team he goes to
