Kaberle to Boston rumors are exploding the internet right now.

N.B.: For anything less than our first back I'd prefer to re-sign Kaberle.

I just don’t understand what Burke could get back that would replace him. Boston’s not going to trade a current piece, and their first is not going to be that high

TOMAS KABERLE: LEAF FOR LIFE

by daoust on Feb 15, 2011 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

I’d love for him to stay, and I’d love for him to resign, but the question in the back of my mind is: what if he doesn’t?

It’s a Ryan Smyth circa 2007 scenario. Risk having him walk as a UFA for nothing, or try to get something in return?

I’d hate to see him go in the worst way possible. That said, I’ve come to terms with it in the way I came to terms with the Jays losing Halladay: all the young talent on D we have to look forward to.

The Bruins’ 1st pick coming back, and that’s about it methinks. No way we get our pick back. And even if we did, you know the Leafs would just go gangbusters and run off a 10 game winning streak.

In contrast to Versteeg, I think Kaberle is exactly the kind of player the Leafs should be trying to move – a guy whose value is still fairly high who will probably be well past his best years by the time the Leafs are competitive again. I’ll still be a little sad to see him go, though.

that is a fair point but Hodgson has 17 in 30, i’m just saying that Rask would likely be the center point of the deal with Colborne as a secondary, he is supposed to be a playmaking center so his numbers might be skewed depending on Boston’s farm team. Still think the deal proposed is a good one considering the circumstances

Are they buddies or something? Or do you mean that Chara has a big shot and that’s the lure?

by potvin vs hextall on Feb 15, 2011 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt that they’re buddies because Chara is slovak and Kaberle is czech (not to be racist, but those two nations have loads of history) but Kaberle doesn’t like to shoot… I know he does shoot a lot but if you watch him on the PP he clearly doesn’t like to unload shots.. his best hockey was when he could set up McCabe.. Chara > McCabe.

by Ben Schnell on Feb 15, 2011 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

That’s what I figured.

Don’t worry, it’s not racist if it’s two countries that actually have a lot of bitter history with each other.

Yeah, but Czechs and Slovaks have a good time playing hockey together… (They did when I lived in Prague, anyway). It’s not exactly Serb v. Croat territory…

At his age Kaberle will want a 5-7 year deal.

A team that is contending might bite the bullet in order to have him while he’s still a force, knowing that they will also be stuck with him when he is over 35.

That kind of deal doesn’t make sense for a team that is hoping to peak in 2-3 years.

I’m assuming here that the only goal is to with the cup.

by PEI Muscle on Feb 15, 2011 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Kaberle is under 35, he will be under 35 when he signs his new contract, he can retire no fuss no muss

Rule #20

by JaredFromLondon on Feb 15, 2011 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

I just meant he probably won’t want to retire.

In any case, whether he retires in 2-3 years or goes into a decline that iamounts to the same problem for a team that isn’t on the cusp of contending.

by PEI Muscle on Feb 15, 2011 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

any contract like that will probably be front loaded and have a lower cap hit, probably similar to what he has now, which, even if he was only putting up 30ish points still isnt bad for a 36 year old D man

DownGoesBrown: This Burke interview on Boston radio is just bizarre…

Anyone know what’s going on?

by potvin vs hextall on Feb 15, 2011 5:31 PM EST reply actions

"There is no barrier to that," Burke said about dealing with the Bruins. "There are no hard feelings, there’s no sense of ‘oh we have to even the score somehow.’ If we can make a deal with the Bruins that make sense for both teams we’re going to do it."

Man I hope this is one of those times that Burke doesn’t mean what he says. I hope he’s planning on gouging Boston.

by potvin vs hextall on Feb 15, 2011 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

Well he is trying to make them think his offer of Kaberle for Seguin is crap.

by Shield on Feb 15, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Well if they were willing to trade Kessel for Kabs and a 1st (recall draft day confusion), then logically Kaberle is worth Seguin and Knight.

Is it unreasonable to think...

That trading Kabby AND re-signing him would be the best thing for the guy? He’s always said that he wants to stay in Toronto, and WIN in Toronto. The Leafs trade him, get back a young center and/or pick, then 2 months later he re-signs with a Leafs team that is considerably better as a result of the trade. He doesn’t have to move out, lives away from home for two months, has a chance at a championship, then comes back for the long term. Could he not be convinced that this is the best course of action for him and his team?

Dangle is the Steve Simmons of the barilkosphere, he loves the Leafs but he’s also a complete asshat.

Okay, what's going on?

I was under the impression there would be punch and pie.

I’m dreading this trade. I fear it’ll just be another pick.

Well, if it is a pick then we are just starting our total rebuild 2 years later then necessary and handicapped by 3 picks.

Yippie.

We could get some rad free agents and have our youth hit their stride next season. IT COULD HAPPEN!!!

Bruins first rounder (their own) and perhaps Hamill and Boychuk for Kaberle?

If we trade for him, I’d have to assume we try to move bodies and sign him.

by 13_Legion on Feb 15, 2011 7:50 PM EST reply actions

I'll bet any trade involves Horton.

They are not happy with him, doesn’t even get PP time anymore. He has played some centre before.

New to the blog by the way. Lurked in past but couldn’t resist getting in on the discussion, really hate the idea of seeing Kabby go. Especially to Boston.

I joined this discussion late so wasn’t surprised at lack of response. Appreciate the welcome, hope I can add something. You guys are entertaining.
