He's not even good enough for the SEL anymore...

On November 1, 2010, due to AIK IF of the Elitserien (SEL) suffering from injuries, Toskala signed a one-month contract with the club, which expired on November 30. Playing in two games, he posted a .898 save percentage and 3.07 goals against average.9

The goaltending situation has improved significantly! But I don’t really buy Wilson’s comments last night about already knowing what Jonas and Giggy have to give the team, it may be just me….but I’m further away from understanding how well the Monster will fit with this team than I was 6 months ago.

I bet the Leafs try and add a goaltending prospect or two this year with a mid or late round pick.

The Leafs have four goalies in the system at the pro level, and a fifth who can’t get any playing time in college. They need one or two guys to keep the pipeline stocked.

Re: Andreoff

He’s not first round material, I’ve seen him at a lot of Oshawa Generals games, I see Andreoff as a 3rd rounder at the earliest. If Burke is going to draft any generals I would most want him to draft:

(In this order)

1. Boone Jenner (skilled & defensivly responsible, but his skating scares me, he’s got a bambe on ice like quality to his stride)
2. Niklas Jensen (super skilled, and some of the best skating I’ve ever seen, decent hussle to get back to his own end, floats just a little though, but he’s improved his defensive side of the game a lot through this year.)
3. Colin Sullentrop (big bodied defensive defenseman with decent skating and a good out-let pass)
4. Andreoff (he’s tough, will probably be a pest at best)
5. Alain Berger (I’d take a flyer on him in the late rounds or sign him as a free agent this off-season, he’s got potential to be a good big bodied screening forward who can deliver clean open ice hits.)

by ILTN on Mar 18, 2011 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Mike Bossy? He deserves to at least be in that discussion.

"Callgirl! She was a callgirl!"
"No Cyril, when they're dead, they're just hookers!"

Marcel Dion was incredible, at least statistically, if not in real life as well.

On the Mike Weber bandwagon (Stupid penalties and all!)
Rob Niedermayer scored a goal. Your argument is invalid.

Ubiquitous has really dissapointed me here. Gilbert Perrault is obviously a contender for “Best player without a Cup”.

Miller, Lundqvist, and Vokoun are all in the category of “has SVP and consistency, but lacks hardware.”

This is where a witty signature might go.

by Bower Power on Mar 18, 2011 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m trying to imagine the stats a gretzky equivalent would achieve in net with some combination of great W/L ratio, a high #of shutouts and an untouchable save %. Most top goalies are pretty close in statistics but no one dominates the save percentage like say gretzky does with assists or goals.

by jeffgm on Mar 18, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

W/L is a team stat. Consistent SVP at or above league average and SOs aren’t a bad tool. High start count is important, too.

gretzkey is more than generational, same with orr and mario, they are sporting gods and comparing other players to them, even generational ones like crosby and ovecking is jsut unfair.

There are definitely different standards for skaters and goalies.

yup, a skater has 5 bad games a season, it doesn’t show up on the stat line, a goalie does and it can potentially blow his season numbers

Rule #20

by JaredFromLondon on Mar 18, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus goalies start riding the upper limit. A decent goalie saves 92% of pucks shot at them, a great one stops 93%. If you stopped 95% that would be godlike, but it would only be 1 shot more saved out of every 50. So about an extra goal saved every game or two. It matters in the long run – a lot – but it’s hard to have that turn you into a heart throb for the casual fans.

Plus it doesn’t LOOK nearly so dramatic as SCORING spectacular goals. Or setting them up with breathtaking plays.

Glory glory Man United, AND the other MU, AAAAnd the Leafs. I think I need a drink now.

Anything would have been better than Shanahan’s POS attempt. Don’t know why you put a power forward out for the last chance in a shootout when you have the world’s best shooter on the bench
