Recaps, Recaps, Recaps
Oh, sure, I could kick things off with an article about the Leafs, but really, they're not yesterday's big news. Hopefully, everyone was able to fit in a little bit of playoff action last night, because there were some good games on. The Pens and Lighting, as well as the Rangers and Capitals, went to double OT, the Coyotes were swept, and Anaheim pulled away from what was a tight game to win 6-3.
To change things up a bit, I've included all the recaps from each team's SBN page, rather than those of the Globe, Star, or National Post. If you find that you don't read them, let me know, because it's double the number of links to make, and if it's not worth it, I won't bother anymore.
Of course, there are plenty of other links that aren't recaps from all the usual suspects, so join me after the jump for some hockey talk.

everyone (bobby mac) says
that it should’ve just been a 2 min as all Richards really did was bring his elbow up when Kaleta tried to elbow him… its not like Richards skated at him with force then put his elbow into his head
I’m not sure if he was doing a sell job there he has a major history of neck injuries.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon!
Sabres took the scenic route, but they still MADE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!1
it looked like a sell job to me…
Maybe cause Kaleta is like Carcillo in my books until I see the x-ray myself I think they are embellishing
Makes me laugh every time, but if I recall correctly Mike Ribeiro did the exact same thing in a game against us before

Poor PHX
They never stood a chance.
Hate Detroit all you want, but hot damn do you have to respect them.
You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless. You have to hope even harder, cover your ears, and go 'blah blah blah blah blah!'
This can’t happen till the conference finals (1st and 3rd). But that would be a great series.

I predicted (if they can make it through), SJ to beat Detroit. I think SJ offense can light up, Mr. Mediocre (Howard).

No hate really, just lots of (begrudging) respect for Detroit.
And remember, if they can go from 20 years of ineptitude to 20 years of dominance, there’s still hope for us.

Datsyuk is clearly using magic.
Seriously, that goal the other night was fucking stupid. It wasn’t even the between-the-legs bit that freaks me out, it was the way he chipped it past Yandle. Watch it again, I can’t understand how the puck goes in the direction that it actually does. YOU CAN"T EXPLAIN THAT!
Datsyuk may be the best player in the NHL…. IMO, its definatley between him and Sid

The only thing one could possibly say is that Datsyuk has better hands than Crosby but it’s hard to be sure because their playing styles are just different. Datsyuk beats guys 1 on 1 by stickhandling around them almost lackadaisically, while Sid is just a monster who uses all his physical strengths and instinct to go wherever he wants on the ice with the puck.

Can’t argue with the Selke trophies, but some of their stats show they are equals. Zetterberg has averaged more TOI per game than Datsyuk 3 of the last 4 years. Their zone shift numbers are practically identical. They both take about an equal number of ES Def FO, and both are over 55% for the last 4 years.
How about QualComp?
Zetterberg has had the higher QualComp, Corsi Rel QOC, and Corsi QOC each of the past four seasons, save for 08/09 when Datsyuk had a higher Corsi QOC.

Offensively there is no difference in their career production. Zetterberg can play all three forward positions and there are few better defensive forwards in the NHL than him.

Zetterberg’s 92 point season (07-08) – Datsyuk had the goal or an assist on 48 of those points.
Since that season they’ve been split up playing C on the 1st and 2nd lines.
This season, Datsyuk only had a hand in 24 of Zetterberg’s 80 points.

and Crosby
In an injury season was the highest P/60 player in the NHL by almost one full point. Also it looks like Datsyuk might’ve been 4th… Stamkos and him are neck and neck.
Datsyuk might be better defensively but no on in the NHL can compare to Crosby and puck control. Who needs to play defense when you can keep the puck pinned deep in the other teams zone.
As well, Crosby is very underrated defensively.

Hard to judge using this graph since I’m assuming this is only for this season and Sid had an unreal first half and was a few games removed (if I remember correctly) on a 20+ game point streak. We don’t really know if he could’ve kept that pace up throughout the season. A graph using their entire career wouldn’t be an accurate measure of skill either as Datsyuk didn’t begin putting up points until after the lockout. Also, Frank J. Selke would like to argue that points aren’t everything

That’s fair. Honestly, it was just because my town was split down the middle between Leafs and Red Wings fans, with a few annoying Habs fans stuck in the middle.
Their fans. Not the Joe Lou faithful – the fans who have no idea what you’re talking about when you joke about the “Dead Wings” era, the fans that think everyone should just find a Lidstrom/Datsyuk, the fans that expect to win the Cup every year, and if they don’t, there was something wrong with hockey that year.
The Wings are plagued by the Yankees’ version of Hockey fans. It’s easy to like the Wings.

But really, Boudreau isn’t a particularly good coach. They continue to fail to screen Lundqvist, and they won that game because Gaborik screwed up, not because of their own play.

TOI for Anaheim game
I noticed this half way through the Second, but the TOI for that game was a little unique.
The top TWO TOI leaders were both forwards-Perry and Getzlaf at 26:49 and 23:19 respectiviely-with Viznovski and Fowler at 3 and 4 with 22:12 and 21:30. More than 4 minutes LESS than Perry.
Based on this one game they have zero faith in their fourth line (Ruutu at 5:41 and Parros at 2:10). This’ll be hard for them if they keep this pattern up and try to go deep.

Thoughts on relocation:
I’ m definitly in the “Winnipeg is a stupid idea” camp, but I think a few years down the road, with a new arena, Quebec City could actually be a cool place to have a team.
It will never be a big time franchise like Montreal, but if you have a solid ownership group willing to maybe lose a little money in the lean years (which, lets face it, is the what the NHL needs for most of its teams).
It’s got proximity to Montreal and the Northeastern USA, and is also a very beautiful city, so I can see people making the trip to catch their team play the Nordiques.
It’s cold, but Minnesota is cold. It’s definitly a much better place than Winnipeg. If a new Nordiques team can market themselves as Quebec’s team (the province not the city), and be owned by, say, Quebecor, then I think they could be successful (for an NHL franchise at least).
Winnipeg may be nostalgic but from a business perspective, its literally a terrible idea.
QC is a slightly better idea, but really the Northwest is actually the best bet (Or Houston)

My favourite part is that apparently the staff members didn’t even know it was him. That is truly incredible.

Has anyone taken a look at his advanced stats? I don’t know how. All I know is the guy is an offensive threat from the blue line on a very good Vancouver team. Not really sold on how well he would fare on a Leafs team with lesser offense, especially since he’d command ~5 million.

"Ironic isn't it, that the very strings I played then are made from the very gut of the animal this song is about" - David McGahan
A really quick look
ES MInutes
pts/60 is 4th on the team (0.82
QualComp is 4th
Erhoff plays the most ES minutes
QualTeam is 2nd
CorsiRel is best on the team at 11.5
PP
3:30/game a tad less than Edler for 2nd
Best p/60 at 5.86
Crazy good CorsiRel in first
PK
5th most on the team but still putting up greater than 2 minutes
Lowest QualComp
3rd best QualTeam
CorsiRel is again best on the team by a significant margin.
I am actually surprised how good these numbers are. They are just based on this year, but he plays tougher competiotion than I expected, does a good job pushing shots down the ice, and his pts/60 on the PP is very impressive.

Swap Lupul and Kadri. He’s not ready for 1st line minutes. Colborne is a center and if he’s not in the Top 9, he’ll be on the Marlies. I like:
Lupul – Weiss/Stastny/Unicorn – Kessel
KGM
Kadri – Colborne – Armstrong
Brown – Bozak – Brent
Boyce
Orr is just plain waived.

People discussed it a little more below, but yeah. He could play on someone’s second line, could mitigate the loss of Stastny a center, and is being forced out of our top 6. If we can talk someone down to Bozak from, say, Kulemin or Colborne, we’re doing well. (Not suggesting a 1-for-1, obviously)

Flip him for a 2nd rounder, package 2nd rounder with prospect for that Unicorn everyone wants. Not that you’d need to in this situation, but I feel NYR will out bid for Richards and their C’s will become attainable, which will shake up the whole market at C.

I think he’s better at every aspect of the game than Boyce. And Brent is a good 4th line C but he’s not a 3rd liner for an extended period of time.
by WizardofNaz on Apr 21, 2011 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Not sure if serious
Bozak is a capable player and would be a great 3rd line centre on a good team. It’s not his fault he was placed in a top line role. The coaches make those decisions, not the player.
And to answer your question, yes he is better than Brent or Boyce. Both of those players are career AHL’ers and while I’ll admit that Bozak had a bad season, I wouldn’t put it past him to rebound from that and start producing again.

My sentiments exactly. I would have liked him last year when we weren’t sure of either top 6 spot but now that Grabbo has become a perfect 2nd line center it’s all or nothing for a guy to play with Kessel. Brooks Laich doesn’t put up enough points, even playing with Ovechkin.

that Johansson, Backstrom and Perreault are all centres so it looks like he’s spent most of his time this year on the wing…
Maybe Burke doesn’t agree with Wilson when Wilson says Kadri is a winger? and would like a guy who can play both? Or maybe he’s picking a guy who can hold a roster spot until Colbourne is ready?

He could be a good fit, not ideal, but good. He plays with a sniper already in Semin and had an off year in terms of shooting % (7.7% vs his average of 10%) that would have put him over 50 points for a third straight years. He would get more PP time with the Leafs, and be our 2nd/3rd PK center instead of Grabovski.
I’d still prefer someone like Weiss, but Laich is easier to get.

Yea, plus it fits with your notion of only needing another 50-60 point C. Which I think is reasonable. Then we can throw some money at Ehrhoff or some other blueliner. I think adding a 50-60pt C and a top-paring D would make this a playoff team. (Usual goal-tending caveats included)

If he were still in his 20s and legitimately had at least 6 good years or NHL production left, I think this would be a way harder call for me. Plus with the concussion history, even if he “fully recovers”, if he gets cranked one more time we could be fucked.

Than Richards? Yes. He will decrease in production DRASTICALLY over hte next couple years. As well I would call Richards concussion as worrying as Stastny’s off year.
I am drinking the Kule-aid!

I’m not sold. We have no idea whether his concussion will become a recurring issue and his production decrease will still make him roughly a ppg player. And while we’ll probably have to pay him somewhat more on the cap, we don’t give up an upcoming prospect like Kadri, Colborne, or Gardiner
I’m happy with either of the two guys to be honest but getting Stastny seems like it would cost too much. I’m on team Richards until he signs somewhere else.

No it won’t. During the last 5 years he HAS BEEN a ppg player. every year between .85 and 1.15. A decrease is going to bring him below that. You don’t pay 7 million for below ppg for a player in their 30s. Hello Gomez.

Paul Stastny hasn’t been a ppg player since his second year in the league. We’d have to give up AT LEAST one of Kadri/Colborne/Gardiner, probably two of them, and a high pick to pry him from Colorado.
Still not sold.

Lets just call it 0.04. So 3 points per year. It adds up when we are talking about signing a guy to a 5+ year contract. Also my bigger concern is that he has had a .3 ppg gap for the last half dozen years. You get him on one of his .85 ppg years are you happy?
I am drinking the Kule-aid!
Certified Kule lover!
first things first – you (and others) have already changed my mind about what I would be willing to throw at richards… but:
over the next two years you said he will decline drastically
if someone goes from 96 points this year to 90 points in 2 years I have trouble calling that “drastic”…in fact I’d say those are two years of pretty equivalent play, subject to some puck luck for better or worse
look, I’m not on the Richards bandwagon and I wouldn’t want him on the leafs for anything other than a reasonable contract (which he won’t get)…
but I have problems with people doubting his ability and making hyperbolic statements like “he will drastically decline”
elephant shell
never question our ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - yardly
I really don’t know where I stand on this issue. I was on Team Richards, but now I’m not so sure.
I think it all depends on what we have to give up. I feel like we have very few prospects that I’d be comfortable with trading this soon.

lets not do anything drastic here… If we can get Stastny/unicorn for a good price then do it but we don’t have to mortgage the farm to do so because WE NEED A PPG PLAYER OMGZ..
I would be perfectly content to settle and sign a Connolly to a one year deal and take things slow. This offseason isn’t the only chance to get a #1 centre before we are cup contenders afterall.
Looking at Connolly I was shocked to notice between 07-10 when he was healthy (err not so much) he was actually very close to being a PPG player himself. If he stays healthy and regains that form then wow we just got an almost PPG centre wooo. If something happens then we promote Colbourne ahead of schedule and go from there. Also if Connolly puts up points at a 60pt pace (ohnoez how terrible) and Colbourne is ready we can flip him for something at the deadline…

There were 13 PPG players in the NHL this year
They played on 8 different teams, 7 of those teams made the playoffs meaning there are 9 playoff teams without a PPG player on them.
9 PLAYOFF TEAMS WITHOUT A PPG GAME PLAYER!
Last year – 25 on 12 teams, only 8 made the playoffs.
08-09: 20 on 12 teams, 8 made the playoffs.

This is what has me thinking we sign another 60 pt center as a UFA and then sign another top pairing d-man as well. Only asset lost is cap space which we have lots of.

I can't tell if your agreeing with me
that getting PPG player this offseason is the end all. I still say its not and your #’s agree with me.
Oh and in 3 seasons between 07 and 10 Connolly put up 152 pts in 169 games which is about .899 pts/g which is pretty damn good… when he’s healthy
So if we are ignoring Stastny’s dropoff for a season should we ignore his as well?
Plus Connolly would allow Colbourne some NHL time when he gets his annual injury.
If we can get a 1 yr deal for around 4.5 (pay more to get the shorter term..) thats very good imo and like I said before we can always flip him later in the season if we want
Oh and he’s a playmaker which would help Kessel and Lupul

I have no problem with a short deal on Connoly. I do not want to role in next year without SOMEONE to play the #1 C spot. I don’t want Colborne rushed, or Bozak bakc into that spot. Part of patience was signing ppl like Beauch who was moved when the team was ready.

Exactly
and I picked Connolly because if he finds a cure for MVR disease, he’d be another 60 pt player if not 70. He’s a stopgap option only and not the longterm solution. But for part of a year just to add depth to the team I’m all for it. I think he’s a better fit than Laich at least

I wonder if Pittsburgh would do it, seeing as how they seem to be able to win without both him and Crosby in the lineup. They don’t really need to move him, and what do we have that they really want? Prospects are only useful if you have slots for them to move up to. Pittsburgh is pretty set in terms of their main blocks of players.

If the Penguins were willing to trade Malkin, one of Kulemin or Schenn would be in the deal, and probably someone else significant too, like Kadri. So something like Kulemin + Kadri + Boston’s 1st. That’s a lot to give up if we’re still considering ourselves to be a rebuilding team.

for me its whoever controls the locker room emotions the best. If theres a player… say a Tim Brent who works his ass off but is really only a 4th line guy. But in the dressingroom controls the team getting them pumped when needed or keeping them calm and collected when needed then that is the guy I want as my Captain regardless of skill level.
And if that is Rickard Wallin for Sweden then he is the best choice. Oh and it doesn’t hurt that he’s a good skilled guy in the SEL as well

Mirtle's article on Kabby makes me sad
"Has he been a disappointment? He hasn’t played up to the level that we expected," Chiarelli told 98.5 The Sports Hub (via Joe Haggerty at CSNNE.com). "There have been parts of his game where he hasn’t played in the playoffs for a while and some of those [bad] habits have stuck with him. We expected better."
Just haaaaaaad to get a playoffs joke in, didn’t you Haggerty.
You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless. You have to hope even harder, cover your ears, and go 'blah blah blah blah blah!'
Haha whoops.
Screw you Haggerty too though, just in case.

Fuck the Bruins, seriously. I still hope they beat the Habs, but beyond that – fuck them. They don’t deserve Kabby.

I still kind of see him fitting well in SJ if he would ever suck it up about the Western Conference thing.

Montreal Canadiens holding a long winder and retarded pre-game ceremony, absolutely shocking
Sometimes it seems this cycle never ends, we slide from top to bottom then we turn and climb again.
