Thursday is such a tease

I knew I shouldn't have eaten that sixth cheeseburger. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Sorry for the delay this morning folks.  I think we're all still half asleep from the snoozer played in Newark last night.  The good news is that Phil Kessel popped home his 31st goal of the season and set a new personal high for points in a season (he is also on pace to play in only his second full-82 game season).  Tyler Bozak added his 15th of the year.  Has Bozie been a slight disappointment?  Probably, although even your PPP overloads figured Bozak would only score 18 goals this season.  For an undrafted kid playing in his first full NHL season, I don't think 15 goals is too shabby (although he had chances to score several more).

Doubtful they burn a year of ELC for a single game. Can’t use the emergency call-up option. ATO would be for AHL only.

Pretty sure he was referring to the AHL… ATO would be fine not burning a year.

Well

I was thinking about that. Let’s use, say, Andy Miele as a comparison for a second. He’s not a perfect comparison, but they both had great NCAA seasons, both up for the Hobey Baker, difference is that Miele could choose any team he wanted (or any team that wanted him anyway). Yes he’s a bit smaller, but he put up big points in his final year just like Frattin.

Anyway, my point is, he went to PHX of all places, for a 2 year ELC deal, max base salary but only $1.35M cap hit with bonuses. And he had 30 teams to potentially go to.

Frattin could wait until Aug 15th if he really wanted to go to a team that isn’t the Leafs, that’s true. But if it comes down to getting the best offer, I gotta think Leafs would match dollar and term just about what any team in the league could.

It really comes down to if he wants playing time or to be a depth player on a contendor or whatever. My point is I think Leafs have a relatively good shot to sign him before then.

You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless. You have to hope even harder, cover your ears, and go 'blah blah blah blah blah!'

by nhlcheapshot on Apr 7, 2011 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I know you admitted it

But I have heard that with Miele’s size it was likely he would not even be signed. He was ppg as a junior (unlike Frattin) and wasn’t signed then.

Not all of them sign with the Leafs even when they have UFA status. I imagine it doesn’t hold as much weight with choosing a team as we’d like to think it does, however each person has different priorities.

The Leafs should definitely give him a shot to make it in the organization, I mean it’s not like we’re in a position to be turning away a talented NCAA player, late bloomer or not. Based on Frattin’s “comeback” story, it’s clear that the kid has strong character and drive. Maybe he turns into a depth energy guy with some scoring ability. If he ended up being similar to a Tyler Kennedy I’d be happy.

Zigo is a classic example of a player who won’t change his play style to make it to the NHL. He needs to become a player like Brent (defensive centre) opposed to playmaker in he AHL. He either can’t do it, refuses to, or hasn’t figured it out yet.

I hope he does though, cause I too like him.

Good article – Cullens % are for 100 NHL games. Someone in PPP did it for 200. At any rate, I was looking for something like this

Round Pick % NHL Player % Chance for AHL
4-6th 15% X

X/15% would be the chance an AHL player (4-6th) makes the NHL. I haven’t seen anyone quantify the chance an AHL player makes the NHL.

by jeffgm on Apr 7, 2011 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

My bad on the 100 vs 200.

What you want is a very difficult analysis because how do you define “AHL player”. Is that a guy like Caputi or MacA who played ~100-150 AHL GP as a “prospect”? Or a guy like Getzlaf who played ~30? What about a guy like Brent or Zigo?

And how do you define makes it to the NHL?

by BCapp on Apr 7, 2011 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

For NHL define any 4-6th rounder that plays 100 NHL games (and they would be included as AHL capable i.e Getzlaf).

AHL definition is tougher because of contract length so I would either use any 4-6th rounder that plays one season AHL or plays out their entire contract in AHL.

He isn’t much of a goal scorer,

12G and 31 pts in his 38 GP rookie season in the AHL when they actually used him as a scoring forward

Then they moved him to a defensive forward (to develop that part of his game).
13 G 34 pts in 56 GP in a defensive role.

He’s also great in the dot. For players with 150+ F/Os last year he was second on the team with a 55.4%.

To be fair it’s been a while since he got a chance with the big club. Seems like he’s become a leader and a go-to guy for the Marlies since he’s been down there. I wouldn’t call him up just for game 82, but he should at least get another good look at training camp.

I think it’s one in three in terms of the NCAA players that you sign that turn into credible NHLers. Bozak (although vastly over rated going into the season) is. Give Hanson a look in camp… but I don’t think it will be a long one.

ROsehill and Hanson have two very different roles. Rosey is a 4th line plug who is there as an “enforcer”. Hanson is not that type of player. SO that’s why Rosehill is up.

Jay Rosehill’s clearly a 12th/13th forward.

But he knows what his job is, he does it fairly effectively, he’s a good enough skater to play 7-8 minutes a night without just skating around looking for a fight, and he makes like 60% of what Orr does.

to me Rosehill is an AHL player

He’s a good fighter but he doesn’t do much else and he’s not like Orr who has people afraid of him… Orr is a better enforcer imo but I wish NIETHER were on this team come next year…

Brown can do the momentum fights and Schenn Komi Phaneuf and Aulie can all stick up for people. Hell like I was saying yesterday put Hanson in there and he can fight when needed too. He can play a regular shift but he’s a decent enough fighter that when the need is there he can drop them. But I don’t see the need to carry a 3 minute a game player on the active roster who cant do anything besides fight and take penalties.

Put one in the press box as the 14th forward and maybe play them against goons like Carkner

Luckily there aren’t many NHL players that aren’t better than him. Yes double negative.

by nhlcheapshot on Apr 7, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Komi could thrive in that role. Three simple tasks every game. 1. Clear the puck out off the glass for his 10 minutes of ice time
2. Hit somebody, hard
3. Win the obligatory fight that ensues

by lucc on Apr 7, 2011 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Problem is you get somebody like Schenn or Phaneuf fighting a Carkner and it hurts our team way more than theirs. Carkner plays Orr minutes but we can’t afford to lose one of our key D for a 5 minute major. If the fourth-line scrubs are pretty much interchangeable might as well have one of them bite the bullet.

Well sure and I’d rather we have a guy like Crosby as our 1C too. But you make do with what you have and Rosehill is a better option than Orr. I say its Brown on one wing and you have a season long competition between Boyce Hanson and Brent for the other 2 spots on the 4th line… if you don’t give it all everytime your on the ice you get benched the next game…

by WizardofNaz on Apr 7, 2011 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

to the above 3

yes I prefer Schenn and Phaneuf to NOT fight but the point is with those 4 on D if there is a dirty hit etc we do have those guys to jump in to defend our guys so we have no need for a Orr on the bench to defend from those hits…
Basically I think we have enough players who will step in and protect themselves and their team mates that a designated heavyweight is necessary… Plus we have Brown still

I don't know about bang on (except for Schenn) but pretty close in some cases. Off in others.

Kris Versteeg – 25 (14) Tyler Bozak – 18 (15) Phil Kessel – 37 (31)
Nik Kulemin – 21 (30) Mikhail Grabovski – 17 (29) Clarke MacArthur – 16 (21)
Fredrik Sjostrom – 7 (2) Tim Brent – 6 (8) Colby Armstrong – 13 (8)
Colton Orr – 3 (2) Mike Zigomanis – 3 (0) Mike Brown – 3 (3)
Caputi/Hanson/Mitchell – 11 (2)

defense:
Francois Beauchemin – 6 (2) Dion Phaneuf – 13 (8)
Tomas Kaberle – 7 (3) Mike Komisarek – 2 (1)
Carl Gunnarsson – 5 (4) Luke Schenn – 5 (5!)

by Leaf in Habland on Apr 7, 2011 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Versteeg, Kessel were pretty off on the high side, MGK was pretty off on the downside, our depth players just put up almost nothing.

We didn’t get nearly enough help from our defense. Beauchemin, Phaneuf and Kaberle all underperformed from a goal-scoring perspective, not necessarily points though. Beauch ended up being used more as shut-down than offense.

The problem

Is the amount of weight they put on the on-ice call. Why are they defaulting to human vision, which is prone to many errors especially in real time in a fast game like hockey, when they have a ton of high tech replay equipment? It makes no sense. There were two “non conclusives” in the replay, but it’s a goal because the on ice ref thought it went in?

We can’t catch Carolina anymore. We are tied with STL with one fewer ROW than them. What’s the next tiebreaker if we both end up with the same # of ROWs?

Also, MIN is 3 points back with 2 games in hand. Man that would suck if they passed us. But at least they are now the only team that can pass us, which would leave us with a worst case scenario of 22nd overall (9th overall pick). Best case scenario, we jump ahead of STL and finish 20th (11th overall pick).

Is anybody really curious about what’s going on with Gustavsson? It just seems odd that the staff & front office doesn’t want to get a look at him in a game to see if he has made progress over the past two months. Yet they throw in Giguere, who admits he desperately needs offseason surgery to correct groin issues.

"The sports hernia itself hasn’t caused me too much pain, but it makes the rest of my muscles not work the way they should be. I think that’s why we had all kinds of problems this year with the groin pulls and stuff like that."
“You can’t really go through a season like this where you’re no good to yourself and you’re no good to your team.”

Somehow this revelation didn’t come to him after the 2nd time his groin exploded? I’m not gonna rip on him any more because his averages aren’t atrocious (.900 / 2.87) but the timing of this just bugs me.

TheGoalieGuild and I were talking about that last night, and I can see both sides. In one case, playing him against New Jersey would’ve meant time to evaluate him in a game situation. On the other hand, though, he would be playing behind a team that likely wasn’t going to bring 100% for their first “doesn’t matter” game in a long time, and who’s doing a back-to-back after a 40-shot, SO game against Washington. So do you really get a good evaluation with all those cross-rink passes NJ was getting last night?

The other thing to remember – but that I don’t want to read too far into – is that the Leafs brass should have a good idea where he is and where they want him in terms of playing another game. It’ll be about 7 months between Gustavsson’s last and next NHL game, earning this the title of “The Gustavsson Experiment,” but I’m excited for the new unveiling next year.

Some of Gustavsson’s issues – especially keeping his angle and depth at an NHL pace – can be figured out in scrimmages. It’s not exactly the same, sure, but what I mean is that I think there’s a developmental reason he’s in the pressbox, not just a loyalty to Giguere.

I asked Mirtle what he was up to, and Mirtle says that Gustavsson’s been at every practice and game day skate. My guess is that, because some of his issues were so fundamental, they wanted to completely remove him from pressure situations and work on his issues slowly – so that he could watch video / work with allaire without having to scream “FUCK” at least once per game.

He’ll probably spend the whole summer doing the same – slow improvement, work on fundamentals, build confidence – and in September – hopefully – we’ll see a Gustavsson 2.0.

I also wouldn’t be shocked if Wilson pulled a switcheroo for the Montreal game. Because it’s Wilson.

Honestly, I’d love to see Thomas get it. He’s posting the best single season save percentage since they started tracking the stat. .938 is ridiculous – it even beats Hasek’s Hart winning years. I’m worried that the hype of Boston’s defense, which continues to be shite after Kaberle and Chara, might keep him off of it, but he’s single handedly gotten the Bruins at least 3 places in the standings.

This is where a witty signature might go.

General Question

Can people explain to me why Wayne Simmonds is so widely valued. A can’t miss prospect/young player? Is it just because he is an NHL regular at such a young age? Putting up 14 G and 40 points as a 21 year old? And now 16/30 as a 22 year old?

He’s been rated very highly and I think people like his game because he is fast, good on the forecheck, young and putting up decent points.

It’s funny how he’s a surefire prospect but some one like Bozak, 2 years old but putting up similar points, is a “bust”.

Ya I didn’t mean to say they were perfectly comparable, Simmonds is clearly playing a 3rd line role and putting up decent points for his age/TOI/linemates, etc.

I just smile at how small a difference in points and age makes one a blue chipper and another a failure.

Simmonds also plays with pretty unimpressive line-mates like Handzus and Ponikarovksy.

by Draglikepull on Apr 7, 2011 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Poni is not unimpressive. He is having a terrible year, there is a difference. Could that perhaps have to do with his line mates?

Also a large part of it is the market. People are going to shit on Toronto players faster, and give a market like LA’s players more patience.

Downside to this MPS/Kadri argument – Kadri is far and away our best prospect at forward. MPS is Edmonton’s third best prospect at forward, and that may change again depending on who they draft this year.

Counter-point – Edmonton has nothing at all going on on defence and their goalies are wholly unimpressive.

We can talk in 2-3 years about Shea Weber, Ryan Getlzaf and Corey Perry, and maybe Zach Parise, but as of today? It’s Staal and other answers are incorrect.

List of players who have done it since 1990-91. 147 have done it twice or more. Some impressive names on that list, but also some very mediocre ones.
I like the trade. I didn’t like Versteegs style of play, and if he continues the way he’s been playing for Philly, the trade IS a steal. But the likelihood of that is extremely low, He’ll probably settle in as a second liner that gets special teams time.

86 have done it three times or more in that time span, as Versteeg has. That works out to 4-5 per draft year. That’s actually a pretty select group.

I hadn’t realized he had hit 20 this year. You’re right on that. Hopefully he turns into Stephan Lebeau and not Jagr.(Seriously Jagr, 7 20 goal season at the age of 24?)

Agree? DIsagree?

I think 4 is a good number. The last 2 regular season games are meaningless

Yeah, Cauncks fans are bitching because “it’s really 6 games on account of playoffs games being worth 2 regulars”, but the 2 regulars don’t mean shit so who cares if he misses. It’s essentially just 4 regular season games, paid in 2 playoff games.

I wouldnt say it was a clean hit, but i can see what some are getting at, Eberle did the whole duck while reaching thing, if he’d been upright it would have been clean
but Torres has to be paying better attention and let up

Rule #20

by JaredFromLondon on Apr 7, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That's my view on it too

And I don’t think it was worth 4. Heatley got 2, Marchand got 2 and would say those were way more targeted than what Torres did.

by Semi_Colon on Apr 7, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a fair criticism. It’s a suspension worthy offense however the last two regular season games for the Nucks are meaningless, so the 2 playoff ones help set a tone. Or they’re just making it up as they go.

So it's the Canucks fault

That they clinched everything too soon so that the last 2 games are meaningless?
I’m pissed because this got 0 games.

Not their fault no, but suspending him for those games would have been meaningless.

It’s come to the point where I can understand fans for being upset their players get suspended because the NHL’s discipline system is such a joke. If there was consistency it wouldn’t be an issue.

So you're saying it's his fault?

But Eberle isn’t to blame for leading with his head?

Torres didn’t even attempt to play the puck on that play. Show me where he goes for the loose puck. Torres knew what he was doing. If he had suspended him 2 games, he may have well just fined him.

The plays are similar in that both involved players in vulnerable positions. I think the onus is on both players but guys need to let up. That being said Torres’ was much worse as like you said, he’s not trying to play the puck.

I said I didn't like the Raffi hit

And that is the reason why, that he didn’t try to play the puck.
But if Eberle doesn’t lean and reach out at the last second, no one’s having this discussion.

So you can’t go saying it’s all Tanev’s fault why absolving Eberle completely

I agree Eberle shouldn’t have leaned in. However it was still a predatory hit. A dirty one.

Vinay's end of season interview with Brian Burke

http://thestar.blogs.com/leafsfan/2011/04/end-of-season-interview-with-brian-burke.html

Nothing earth-shattering, just straight to the point Burke.

Reffering to our #1/#2C position:

“Do I regret not getting a center? I haven’t been offered one at a price that makes sense. I can overpay and get a center. Would I like to have one? Yes. That’s different than do I regret not getting one.”

The real issue, he says, has been negotiating power.

“What did we have to give up before this spring? We had no firsts. We had no Joe Colborne, no Jake Gardiner. What did we have to offer teams? I could have traded Kulemin for a center. But then we lose a Top 6 forward.”

Reffering to the first two rounds of the upcoming draft:

“We want to pick at least twice,” says Burke. “So if we can package two of those picks to move up, we would do it. But we’re not going to package three of them to move up. We want to pick twice.”

You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless. You have to hope even harder, cover your ears, and go 'blah blah blah blah blah!'
