A slow Sunday in Leafs land

Things will ramp up for Toronto after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final, but right now there's nothing but rumor and speculation.  Like a show on MTV, there's no real substance.  There are still interesting storylines elsewhere in the NHL though.  For example, the hated Vancouver Canucks will attempt to win their first championship tomorrow night in Boston.  I say attempt because, as we all know, the meltdown by Roberto Luongo is inevitable.  Then we'll get an entire summer of Vancouver writers telling us how the Canucks were robbed.  It's going to be delicious.  Go Bruins.

Follow after the jump for a few Leafs links and other news from around the NHL...

If the Canucks win the Cup, I hope they win it in Boston. I can’t imagine the horror of the planned in-house celebration at Vancouver GM Place/Rogers Centre/Diving Bell (or whatever they’re calling their home rink this week).

When you consider the Canucks take to the ice to a 20 year old middling track and the nonsense that went down when they won the Conference, a Stanley Cup win in Vancouver is all but guaranteed to look like the closing moments of a private school prom from 1986.

I dunno… with a game seven causing Vancouverites to chew off their nails with worry, nerves and fears of impending conspiracies, it would create a perfect storm that could culminate into a celebration/riot of such proportions that the whole city just falls into the ocean…

I know people love what the Leafs got out of Macarthur again and want us to try to hit another homerun in free agency (like Wolski), but it really seems like most of the people doing that are completely ignoring out depth chart. Like it or not, 7 of our 8 winger slots are already taken for next year. Macarthur, Kulemin, Kessel, and Lupul will almost certainly be our top 4 wingers. Colby’s spot on the 3rd line is locked up. Brown and Orr will be playing on the 4th line. That leaves one 3rd line wing slot open, and right now Kadri seems to odds-on favourite to play there.

So when someone says that we should take a chance on a winger, presumably what they’re saying is that we should sign someone and see whether or not they can outplay Kadri in camp. How many players do you really think are going to be willing to sign here with such low odds of making the lineup?

One of the reasons that Macarthur was able to break through last year is because we were pretty weak on the wing heading into the season, with just one guy who had ever scored 30 goals and only 2 others (Versteeg and Armstrong) who had ever hit 20. So there was lots of ice time to go around, and Macarthur took advantage of that opportunity. But there is no opportunity to eat up big minutes playing alongside guys like Grabo and Kulie on our roster this year.

The only way this changes is if Burke trades one of our wingers and doesn’t get a winger in return. But until that happens, there just isn’t a space in our roster that’s open.

by Draglikepull on Jun 12, 2011 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

Orr needs to be a healthy scratch most nights next year, or made captain of the Marlies. We need to be able to run 4 lines nd he doesn’t really give us that option. Top 6 is set:
Lupul-Unicorn-Kessel
MGK

But they’ll suffer injuries this year (we got lucky last year). So we have to have guys who can step in. Thinking we should run the bottom 6 like this:

Hanson / Crabb / Brent / Brown? / UFA Torres – Bozak – Armstrong
This can be your Dzone faceoffs checking line

Crabb / Brown / Hanson – Kadri – Boyce
Your Hobo Killer line, can pitch in scoring against the other teams weaker lines.

by samspade on Jun 12, 2011 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh and to be clear I am not advocating UFA Torres, I just think there is a good chance of it happening.

Also, Wolski has a high cap hit but his contract is expiring. Bring him in and slot him on either of the bottom lines I wrote.

by samspade on Jun 12, 2011 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

We’ve been over this a hundred times. Most people here want Orr to be scratched, but barring a sea change in the way that Wilson and Burke think, he’ll be playing on the 4th line. That’s a reality we need to deal with.

And I think playing Kadri on a low minutes line with guys who have litttle offensive upside is a waste of his talents. Either give him some decent teammates to play with or put him back in the AHL and see if he can tear it up down there.

by Draglikepull on Jun 12, 2011 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Also, I have no idea why we would be bringing back a spare part like Crabb. If we suffer injuries, bring up one of our younger guys like Frattin/Caputi/Mueller/D’Amigo and see what they can do.

by Draglikepull on Jun 12, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m really hoping Frattin and D’amigo have good camps and get themselves a good spot on the marlies (d’amigo-colborne-frattin?) because I want to see all three of those guys up at some point or another- if they earn it at least.

You are (sadly) likely correct about Orr. But lets say for a second that we do use Orr only on occasion.

I didn’t say we should bring Crabb back, I just listed him as one of the guys going for a spot. Kadri actually was centring Boyce and Crabb this year and it wasn’t a terrible line. It’s not wasting Kadri’s talent because:

A) There are going to be injuries to the top 6 this year so I am sure Kadri moves up the lineup.
B) Eventually guys lie Frattin or Mueller will probably get a look and that would be a perfect slot for them. Also, if you brought in a Wolski or Bernier there would be a place for them.
C) You are now running three scoring lines, and lord knows we’ll need goals.

The one mistake is I gave Boyce a slot, when he should be competing or one. But yeah, ultimately this wont be the case because Colton Orr will be in the lineup.

by Chemmy on Jun 12, 2011 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not.

Not saying this is necessarily “talent” but I’d be willing to sign Bernier to a 1 or 2 year deal that’s less than Reimer’s figures. I don’t expect a Macarthur-esque breakout from him, but it wouldn’t hurt to give him a shot, he was a very promising prospect under Wilson in SJ.

Also, I have a good feeling Bozak will step his game up from last year- lots of players go through sophomore slumps but hopefully that helps him mature as a player. If he earns it out of camp, I would give him another shot on the Kessel-Lupul line (assuming MGK is together and Kessel/Lupul are missing a center) and if Kadri earns the 3rd line C spot, Bernier can fit on his wing.

Another interesting thought, is if that situations plays out with MGK and Lupul-Bozak-Kessel and Kadri earns a spot on wing, what about trading for Jarret Stoll? His cap hit is 3.6 million, but this is his last year under contract and he would fit right in at 3rd line C and it would give LA a chance to take a run at Richards if they felt like it. Obviously this probably won’t happen but if LA really wanted Richards, they’d have to open room down the middle and Stoll is probably their expendable piece.

I agree it’s not a lot but if we pulled that off + maybe a move up the draft board and Burke is able to pluck a top center prospect or some other high end forward prospects I wouldn’t be upset.

Also, if we’re taking Stoll as a salary dump, you’d have to think they’d send up something in return as well, maybe a 1st next year since they’ll likely be a very good team? Don’t know what we’d send back, it would have to be something like a low cost winger or a prospect. But I don’t see how the deal would negatively affect us other than if we send a good piece back to them.

If you don’t think 7/8 slots are already locked up, who of the 7 players I named do you realistically think either:

a) Burke will send to the Marlies

or

b) Wilson will make a healthy scratch for most of the year?

Also, Wolski in particular is going to have other suitors besides us; he’s not going to go to a team unless it says to him “Here’s where you fit in our plans for next year.” If we can find a guy in August who still doesn’t have a contract and is willing to sign a cheap ($1 million-ish) contract and play in the minors or be a healthy scratch until injuries hit, then fine, sign them. But the truth is that right now we don’t have room in our lineup for wingers and most UFAs aren’t going to want to come here and sit in the pressbox for half the year.

by Draglikepull on Jun 12, 2011 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

But the truth is that right now we don’t have room in our lineup for wingers and most UFAs aren’t going to want to come here and sit in the pressbox for half the year.

“locked up” – Kessel, Kulemin, Grabbo, MacArthur. They all deserve ice time and will produce when they have it.

I think every other roster spot should be earned (yes, including Lupul and Armstrong) and if they aren’t doing shit with their ice time, i’d like to have some one who isn’t a rookie taking his spot.

We lack depth. Big time.

Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.

by nhlcheapshot on Jun 12, 2011 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not asking who you think should earn their ice time, I’m asking who you think Wilson will scratch or shift down in the lineup. If you think the Leafs will ice a 4th line that features $7 million in wingers and doesn’t have Colton Orr on it, then you have a far different opinion of Ron Wilson and Brian Burke than I do.

by Draglikepull on Jun 12, 2011 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, I don’t think we really lack for depth at wing. If Kadri improves his play from last year, we have lots of scoring ability on the wing. Where we lack depth is at the other positions – centre, defence, and goalie.

by Draglikepull on Jun 12, 2011 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d argue Lupul has earned his ice time as much as MacArthur.

There production over the last 82 GP of their careers is pretty similar leaning towards Lupul IIRC. He had a major injury and I am excited for what he can produce after a summers training

by JaredFromLondon on Jun 12, 2011 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I even have some (SOME) sympathy for the “because they are Canadian” bit. On the non-fan civilian level I have a general pro-Canada bias and would rather see a bunch of Canadians happy than a bunch of Americans. Nothing against America, and I don’t feel THAT strongly about this (it’s not like I’m against Americans being happy, I did marry one), but if I’m casting around for any old reason to prefer one side or the other wins, this doesn’t strike me as an invalid argument.

In fully truthossity, this is one of the factors on my own personal scales in weighing this one up. It’s joined there by much bigger rocks like “dear god we’d never hear the end of the kessel thing” and a very marginally better draft pick for the leafs, and Vancouver’s diving and the obnoxiousness this is going to give to their fans (best case scenario: It puts a dent in their inferiority complex and they actually chill out a little in the long run), and the obscene amount of sports trophiness that Boston is seeing this decade. It’s all in there.

Can I say for the record every Canadian expat I have met – most Leafs fans but a couple Oilers, and some Flames – are cheering for the Canucks.

For Leafs/other fans, I don’t think you have to cheer for the Canucks, but cheering against them, particularly when the B’s are such a rival, is just sad. Hell I was hoping that the Leafs made it to the postseason. fans like this make me reconsider.

I can see that. It’s easier for you to jump on the bandwagon for another Canadian team if you don’t have to live with their fans. Plus there’s something about being away from your home country which makes you nostalgic for all things that belong to it. If you live in TO then you’re surrounded by all things Canadiana 24/7, so there’s nothing that special about it. If you live elsewhere all of a sudden you start clinging to the common cause a bit harder.

That’s why I didn’t mention Torres and Burrows. The Bruins have their share of dirty players (though I’d argue biting and hair pulling takes an extra degree of being-a-bitch), but they tend to stay on their own two feet. Dirty hits and cheap shots are between players, and rarely result in goals. Diving penalties and power plays are different.

Can Vancouver make it any harder...

for Canadians to cheer for them?

“It’s not hard if you are playing in the paint. It’s an easy save for me. But if you’re wondering out and aggressive like he does that’s going to happen.”

- Luongo

That and the whole, the rest of Canada isn’t cheering for us (crying) and don’t jump on our bandwagon crap is enough to drive me insane. Honestly Lalongo, if you hold the record for most goals allowed in a Stanley Cup Final game (post-challenge cup), you shouldn’t be so smug.

Oh come on, you are cherry picking the damn quote.

First of all, its 100% true that Thomas style leads to those kinds of goals.

Second of all, Luongo goes on to say “he’ll make some saves I won’t make” right after that.

There are lots of reasons to hate the Canucks but lets not be full of it.

Y'all Heard About Me, You Just Didn't Know It was Me

by JaredFromLondon on Jun 12, 2011 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

No it's not

it’s just a statement about playing styles. This is the kind of observation that every goalie tactics ever has made: “If you do X then it makes Y types of shots easy to save, but makes Z type more difficult.” If you challenge the shooter you make it hard for them to score by beaming it, but easier for them to score by deking it in. This isn’t exactly barn burning material here.

Y'all Heard About Me, You Just Didn't Know It was Me

by JaredFromLondon on Jun 12, 2011 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

First, going from the left corner to right post to follow up a shallow rebound isn’t an “easy” save for Luongo. If I could design a “what’s the hardest two-shot save series you could think of?” that would be it. Second, Luongo doesn’t exactly get to trash talk when he’s letting in glove-low shots from 40+ feet out. Third, it’s not his place to say “I could’ve saved that.” I don’t care if he follows it up with “and sometimes, he makes saves I couldn’t” – you just don’t get to do that.

Luongo also said “I have been pumping his [Thomas’] tires ever since the series started.” Luongo then added: “I haven’t heard any one nice thing he’s had to say about me.” There’s nothing cherry picked about that comment.

It’s a bitch move. Honestly, I’ve spent a lot of time defending Luongo on the internet up until these playoffs – I hate seeing anyone make a goalie a scapegoat when he posts better then league average, and Canucks fans seem to love heaping blame on him. But some of his comments (and actions, what with the diving, especially in the Nashville series), make it really, really hard not to hate him.

A 25 year old who has improved his point total every year he’s been in the league who can score goals and plays a physical style of hockey. Depending on the price, I would totally be down for that. It would save us from getting locked into a Brad Richards boat anchor, and who knows where Dubinsky’s points totals might go playing on a team that’s got more firepower than the Rangers. It would give us a top 6 where we could potentially have all 6 guys score 25 goals, and all of them are under 30. I would be on board for that, as long as the cost wasn’t exorbitant.

When it comes to draft talk, there is this one kid that intrigues me

His name is Dmitri Jaskin:

http://bruins2011draftwatch.blogspot.com/2011/03/dmitri-jaskin-back-on-attack.html

Jaskin is a complete package; skating is a certain drawback, as he lacks smooth stride and looks awkward at times but has deceptive speed, is strong on his skates and is able to get where he needs to be. He is strong on the puck, tough to separate off the puck down low. Goes through checks and tough to handle physically, shields the puck well. Excellent puck puck control in tight space and very good hands in close to the net. Very creative with the puck, anticipates well, has vision and soft hands, passes are crisp. Drives the net, very instinctive player around the net with scoring touch, looks for tips and rebounds close to the net. Quick release of his wrist shot. Finishes all checks causing (defenders) to throw the puck away, creating turnovers plus absorbs checks well, tough to knock him down.Very solid defensively, responsible in own zone and make good decision with puck in own zone showing poise and hockey sense, smart and poised with puck around own blue line, does even the small things well. Has enthusiasm for the game, always plays hard, strong competitor, plays with heart and character.

Would you guys be up for picking this guy if he were available in the 2nd round? I hear from people that have watched this kid play call him a monster. One major issue was that he was injured early this season.

Jaskin’s skating is his flaw, but it states that he’s strong on his skates.

Since I thought Jaskin was a high risk/high reward type of pick, I thought he might be worth it in the 2nd round or later. It’s not like all bad skaters can’t play in the NHL (eg. Lupul), though it does limit their effectiveness.
