Carl Gunnarsson May Be Close to Signing New Contract With Leafs
Found by Croatian Leafs fan Mislav Jantoljak (@Xterratu) is what appears to be a Swedish language website with a quote from Gunnarsson's agent, Peter Werner of CAA stating that a two-year, one-way deal is close to being signed. Below is the roughly translated text of that article via Google Translate:
Cloudy today: Carl Gunnarsson signs with two new years
Carl Gunnarsson, 24, made a strong season in Toronto. Now comes the reward. A new two-year contract.
Carl Gunnarsson Linkoping left for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 2009, but it was not until this winter, he established himself in the NHL. It was 68 matches and 20 points (4 +16) to the hill from Örebro. And now Sportbladet can reveal that he will remain in Toronto for two more years.
- We agree with Toronto, but the contract is yet signed. This shows that Carl is now a solid NHL-back, especially given that the contract is for two years and one-way, "said agent Peter Werner of CAA.
The details and salary in the new contract is not yet public.

Curious to see what the numbers are gonna be like on this. Hoping for $1.5 per or less. Getting excited seeing signings coming up to the draft. Next up Schenn

Hopefully they used Grant Clitsome’s deal as a comparable, though Gunnar will probably make a bit more.

Exactly. Though i don’t expect us to be blown away by a crazy dollar amount or anything.

Apparently Brian Burke confirmed the Carl Gunnarsson contract on the Fan 590 this morning at 1.3 Mill.
No one else is confirming it yet though. If so, cheaper than Lebda…

Not true. Brady didn’t even mention it to him. But that amount is probably in the ballpark anyway.

He does write for Hockeybuzz, but he seems to have a real good handle on prospects/scouting stuff. Obviously, that doesn’t mean he’s a credible source for confirming a signing though.

you’d think that it’d be on google news by now if Burke had confirmed the signing AND a dollar amount.

I love the broken jibber jibber of the translation. Makes the signing seem that much better!
oh that car got tow, uP!
I think some people here are setting themselves up for disappointment. If Burke can get Gunnarsson signed for $1.3 million, he’s a genius. Anything under $1.5 would be a great deal, and as I said above, I think it comes in at closer to $2 million (which is still a pretty good deal for a guy playing 20 minutes a night and getting 1st unit PP time).
Ya that rumour may have just improperly set expectations, and now a bunch of places are retweeting it…
Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.

this place
consistenly overestimates what RFAs are going to get from Burke. Remember the #s bouncing around Kulemin? Or some of the loopy ones out there now for MacArthur?
20 points this year and 35 points in 111 career NHL games for an offensive Dman of his age? This is not Paul Coffey.
I hope he progresses, and 2 years is a nice timeframe for both sides.
Something around $1.5 sounds about right to me.

1.3 mil? That’s pretty damn reasonable.
The hockey writers article from a couple of days ago guessed a resigning for 1.2 mil so they were pretty much on the money:

actually
they said “no more than $1.2 million a season” so they were kinda off… $1.325 mill cap hit is over $1.2 mill.

To be fair
and we now know he got $1.325 per year… I think saying $2 mill is unreasonable because he’s not “paul coffey” is a bit unfair.
If you want the going cap hit rate for D men in his age range as RFA’s and production just look at this list:
Jason Demers: $1.25 million
Dan Girardi: $1.55 million
After a year the rates jump up to $2.75 mill for the likes of Jeff Schults, or over $3 mill for the likes of Bieksa and Edler.
His numbers compare favourably to all of the above… as mentioned in my previous posting here.
I think long term he costs us around $3.5 mill, but having him for two more years under $1.5 mill? That’s a sweet signing.

And before everyone starts to say “Well see that Hockey Buzz guy was right, they do have spies” realize that they a) didn’t know jack shit, and that b) a broken watch is right twice a day and Hockey Buzz even less. For some reason people only remember the 2% of things they “get right” and not the 98% of things where they are completely off base.

It’s a little bit more than I was thinking ($900-$1.1m), but a nice signing that won’t kill us if he backslides (like so many young defencemen do).
Looking at the D corps, and the anticipated cap space…I’m starting to think that Burke might make a move to get Wisniewski.
Aulie, Schenn, Komisarek, Gunnarsson…none of ’em will every be mistaken for an offensive defenceman.

It’s also equally fair to expect him to regress a bit (as many young defencemen do). And if that’s the case, then finding offense from the back end might be a bit difficult with the current crop.
by Richard S. Argent on Jun 14, 2011 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Gunnarsson will be 25 next season, and has already played 111 NHL games over two years. I’m not sure why you keep referring to him as a young defenseman, but this will be his third NHL season, and he’s the 4th oldest defenseman on the team (Komisarek, Lebda, Phaneuf; technically Lashoff is 2 months older as well, but we’ll see if he makes the Leafs out of camp).
