We've Got Fourth Liners in Spades
With the signing of Darryl Boyce yesterday, the Leafs find themselves with an awful lot of bottom 3 talent going into training camp. There's the aforementioned Boyce, Colton Orr, Mike Brown, Mike Zigomanis, Philippe Dupuis, and Jay Rosehill. None of these players have a ceiling higher than the 4th line in the NHL and none of these players scream out essential AHL veteran (except for Zigomanis). What are we doing with all these guys?
Now granted injuries will happen throughout the lineup and there will be a necessity to move players up the depth chart in order to fill holes, but the Leafs have more than enough true prospects waiting in the wings and deserving of their shot at the NHL. If Joffrey Lupul goes down, who are we replacing him with; Jay Rosehill or Matt Frattin? Exactly.
The biggest question mark of those 6 players is Philippe Dupuis. If the plan was to sign Zigomanis to replace Brent, then why also sign Dupuis? With his 1-way contract, it just seems like a waste of money and an SPC. Hopefully Burke has a bigger plan for these guys that I'm just not seeing, because right now it seems like he's randomly signing guys without one. Time will tell.

67sound mentioned, and I agree with him, that waiver/contract status will be more important than how well these guys do in training camp when it comes to who cracks that fourth line.
I guess Dupuis, Boyce, Zigomania are only there in case of an injury, or someone shits the bed royally. We’re still gonna see too much of Rosehill and Orr I think.
Also, as you just pointed out on twitter, looks like only Kadri’s waiver exempt among guys expected to battle for NHL jobs out of camp, so it’ll be tough to shuttle guys like Zigo, Dupuis, Boyce, Rosehill etc. between the AHL and NHL. More likely that the Frattins and Colbornes of the world will be injury replacements.

what about everyones boi Luca?? is he waiver exempt? i personally think he should be given a shot at a 3rd line roll, and believe he still has potential to thrive in that sort of roll.

Has anyone looked at Orr’s more in-depth stats, or would that be just a waste of time? I know he doesn’t score… but how bad is he at giving up scoring chances?
I guess it doesn’t help that he never fails to take 1 or 2 dumbass penalties per game. All I want from him is:
-discipline
-give the puck to someone else and start skating up the ice
-hit someone when you get there
-punchisize Carkner’s face
They really are dumbass penalties.
If you look at my Win Threshold Part III, I include a section on Penalties drawn – taken and his is like -2.8./gp

He is really quite bad. He takes a lot of defensive zone starts but it’s against pillow soft competition (last among Leafs forwards with > 30 GP) and gets steamrolled (second last in Corsi On, last in Corsi Rel).
But he’s a beast of a fighter.

Correct. If this was 2010 and we were reviewing the stats from 2009, it would be a different story.
The positive spin to this is that the Leafs are the youngest they’ve been in years. It would be silly to think that they won’t improve. Enough to rely on merely average goaltending? No. Remier/Gus are crucial to our playoff hopes.
by stevesmith19 on Jul 15, 2011 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions
Anaheim was worse than us in those above ratings, but got .915 (just above average) goaltending and ended up as the 4-seed. The Leafs certainly have other ways they can improve, but at this point no issue is more glaring, and no issue, if repaired, would make as big an impact as improving our .907 goaltending.

I asked this yesterday
but it was the end of the day.
Now that rosters are being finalized… free agency is wrapping up, rookies are drafted, trades made, who do you see as the playoff teams? top in each conference? champion?
I can see the east looking like this, in order of playoff performance:
1. Washington Capitals
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
3. Boston Bruins
4. New Jersey Devils
5. Tampa Bay Lightning
6. New York Rangers
7. Philadelphia Flyers
8. Toronto Maple Leafs
Then WSH, PIT, NJ & NYR advance, with WSH & PIT going to the conference finals, and WSH going to the finals
In the west here are my predictions:
1. Las Angeles Kings
2. Chicago Blackhawks
3. Vancouver Canucks
4. San Jose Sharks
5. Detroit Red Wings
6. Nashville Predators
7. Anaheim Ducks
8. Calgary Flames
With LAK, CHI, VAN & SJ advancing, LAK & CHI making the conference finals, and LAK advancing
WSH takes it all over LAK
I find it really difficult to break things down into exact seeds. I always liked the idea of a tiered system.
Example:
tier 1: Pittsburgh, Washington, Boston – teams you know will make the playoffs, likely in the top 4 seeds
tier 2: Buffalo, Philadelphia, Rangers – teams you expect to make the playoffs, but they’re not sure-fire top 4 seeds
tier 3: Tampa, New Jersey, Florida, Toronto, Montreal, Carolina, Winnipeg – teams battling for the bottom 2, possibly 3 seeds
tier 4: Islanders, Senators – bottom dwellers

Buffalo lives and dies by Ryan Miller. If they play him for 70+ games again, they’ll make a quick 1st round exit.
The First Certified Grabbo Lover
I don’t think Buffalo will see significant improvements in their ability to control the play, meaning they’ll have to pull a Boston to win the cup.
by stevesmith19 on Jul 15, 2011 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t really think they will win the cup. I just think they have a deep enough team to be a tough opponent in the playoffs. But like Skinny said, they rely heavily on Miller (although I think they’d be fairly safe to give Enroth more starts to help alleviate that problem) and that could of course create a problem pretty early on in the postseason.

He’s a sold player…but I can’t see him scoring more than 65 points in a year. Don’t think I would pay him that much money over that term, for that.
"You said you didn't give a f#%k about hockey. And I never saw someone say that before..."
65 is an excellent winger. Not sure if he’ll even reach that in Buffalo. He played with Hartnell and Giroux the majority of the time in PHI so unless he plays with Derek Roy, he’s playing with poorer linemates. And even then I’d take Giroux over Roy.
I think the world of Giroux…agreed. 65 is an excellent winger, but that is his, in my mind, possible ceiling. To lock up that much money in someone on a possibility is questionable.

I was tempted to put the Islander’s into your Tier 3. They’re starting to look good, they have a really good core, just no goalie. I don’t think Philly is a tier 2 team anymore. I mean I think they’ll make the playoffs but I think they’ll be battling for 7 or 8. Boston should be tier 2 but since there’s no competition for the divsion they’ll win it.
I think NJ is good, Florida is tier 4, and carolina is probably also tier 4… carolina isn’t improving their team very much at all year to year.

Also note that for every team in Tier 2, the “something terrible” is going to be goaltending. Every one of those teams are basically good teams that can be completely undone by cruddy goaltending.

NJ is going to be pretty Solid with Parise – Kovalchuk up front and if they get any kind of coaching they should do well
The more I look at the NYR the more they look pretty stacked.. great players up front with Richards – Gaborik, guys like Callahan, Dubinsky, etc. Pretty decent bottom 6, super solid on D and one of the best goalies in the league :/

To me Malkin is easily one of the 5 most dominant players in the world, when he’s on. He’s lacked consistency and had major injuries the last 2 years so he’s faded from memory a bit. But he is truly incredible. I mean go back and look at video of the Pens cup run. He has “take over a game, take over a series” ability.
in 09 he was #1 in the world probably.. I mean historically he’s never been the best player in the world.. its always been crosby and ov above him while he’s been alive, but for that year he was the most dominant, going 82gp 35g 78a 113pts
He followed that up with an amazing performance though, going 67gp 28g 49a 77pts
not much to complain about there
and putting up
4gp 3g 3a 6pts in the Olympics and 5gp 5g 2a 7pts in the world championships.

To say nothing of the fact that now Crosby has Neal on his wing, who’s going to score 40 as a result.
yup, a full year of Neal and a chance for them to build chemistry

I don’t know about that. Crosby has slowly become more a goal scorer, and for the past couple of year his goals have gone up and his assists down. He’s a 50G, 50A player now. When he recorded 70 assists a few year back playing with Malkin, Malkin only had 35 goals….and he’s Malkin.
I think Neal should score 30, but that’s about it.
The First Certified Grabbo Lover
well being on a line with Crosby and being at least semi good at putting the puck in the net means you get a ton of space
he isnt a lock for 40 or anything but it is easy in his reach if he has a decent season, he scored 27 two years ago without crosby

Not to say Eriksson isn’t good but Benn is younger but has outperformed Eriksson at a similar age. He also currently has comparable advanced stats, despite being much younger. I believe Eriksson played with Richards as well.

I realize that but aside from the powerplay, he’s kind of had to adjust from playing with scrubs like Kunitz, Guerin, etc.
I mean they’re not bad players but they can’t keep up to his level of play—who can.
Maybe when he sees that Neal can shoot he sets him up more.
I agree that he’s a pretty balaned player.. can easily go 50g 60a and what not.
Still though, Neal is a shoot-first

Maybe the logic being that Malkin can do a lot more from the wing, and that after allowing him to last year, they want Staal in a more offensive role?
He kind of underwelmed last year on the top line, but I guess it was an adjustment.

who the fuck is bryzgalov?
Miller was the best goalie, but nobody was more valuable to his team this year than Coyotes
goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. The Russian had a 42-20-5 record with a 2.30 GAA and .920 SP with eight
shutouts. He carried the money-starved Desert Dogs, who had missed the playoffs for six
straight seasons, to the third-best record in the conference.
It comes down to the talent around the two goalies. Simply, the Sabres were better from top
to bottom than the Coyotes, which supports the argument Bryzgalov needed to be more valuable
than Miller even if he wasn’t necessarily better.

No one is doubting Pronger’s credentials or skill. But he’s wearing down and there’s no chance he plays all the remaining games after he does eventually start the season. He gets beaten up much more easily nowadays.

The Flyers traded away 2 of the best 2way centres in the game. Who is going to replace those tough minutes? Who is going to line match against Crosby?
Giroux? The guy is great, but he has never played that role alone so I doubt he is ready yet (he probably will be soon)
Briere? He was an incredibly sheltered player
B Schenn or Couturier? You are nuts if you think they are going to be ready to take on that role
Face it man, Carter and Richards are not easy to replace. And the 2 best defenders on the team (Timmo and Pronger) are getting pretty long in the tooth.
You are banking on goaltending, except that the Penguins have MAF. He had a rough season in 09-10 (.905), but in other years he has consistently been a .910+ goalie, and hit a .918 last year.
The Penguins have a great defense (probably a better defense), and way better depth at centre. The Flyers have better wingers, and a bunch of guys who may be really good in a few years. But outside of goaltending saving them, there is no reason to believe the Flyers are a better team.
I would put Jagr or Briere out against Crosby

Yeah you can’t really shut down Crosby with anyone, especially those two. Jagr probably can’t skate anymore, and Briere would be flicked away by Crosby like a mosquito.
there are very few forwards in the NHL who are strong enough and fast enough and clever enough to do a passable job defending Crosby, one of them was Mike Richards

Schenn, Simmonds, Vorachek and Jagr are great upgrades for an off-season. To add that collection of players up front over a summer would boost most teams to contention. The problem is you had to lose 2 amazing players to do so, so its not as much of a boost as it would have been.
Personally I think Jagr is good for 45-50 points, though people have debated with me on this. Schenn should have a good rookie season and put up maybe 40 points. Simmonds is good for near 20 goals, another 40 points. I don’t know a lot about Vorachek but he’s in the same range as far as I understand.
And yes you have a good goalie. But adding those 4 guys, and losing those 2, plus now having to compete with Crosby and Malkin.. it’s not even close.
Giroux will have to play tougher minutes as well.

When they got Schenn all anyone could say about his is that he might SOMEDAY be the player the Richards was…
There’s no guarentee that he ever will be that player, and its extremely unlikely he becomes more than that player. Its probably more like that Richards gets better than he was than to expect Schenn to be better than Richards is.

All valid points. But they’ve been in cap hell for so long, I think if they’re smart about negotiating their RFA deals upcoming in the next couple of seasons, they might be positioning themselves for free agency 2013. Richards and Carter were great players, but it seemed like the team hit a wall with that group, they couldn’t surpass the truly elite teams in the East, nevermind the West. So if they can get solid contributions on cheap deals out of Schenn/Couturier/Simmonds/Voracek and go full steam ahead for someone like Getzlaf, you’ve gotta think that’s a much better team for a cup run than what they had when they went to the finals in 2010.
banking on a UFA crop years away is a terrible strategy

is actually the best explanation i’ve seen yet for what the thought process is. Carter trade made sense to me, sort of. But the only way the Richards deal could be explained was that Snider was meddling.
Bryz an upgrade in net? No question.
Defense is still very very good.
But losing Richards/Leino/Carter up front is definitley 3 of their 5 best forwards. I bet Giroux and JVR step up with a bit more offense. But Briere’s on the decline. There’s just no way that Jagr/Voracek/Schenn/Simmons replace the offense and all around play of that trio.
In 2 years, then maybe yeah, they’re better position. ’Cept then their defense is geriatric.
Positioning themselves to build a better core in 18 months or so might be a good idea, but I don’t actually think that’s what they’re doing.
Unabashed fan of the surprise 2012 Stanley Cup champs
Having thought abut it, I like the return on Carter way more than the return on Richards.
With Carter there was a great chance that the 8th pick would lead to one of Couturier / Hamilton / Zibanejad, and Voracek is going to be a great winger. In other words, while none of the players you could draft are likely going to become Richards, you can still address multiple needs in the roster with cost controlled players.
Simmonds just seems like a more physical, less score-y Versteeg (ie a good support player) and Schenn is going to be great but quite possibly not as good as Richards or Carter. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that if LA offered B Schenn + Simmonds for Kulemin + Kadri i’d say no.
Between losing Richards, Leino, Carter and Zherdev, the Flyers need to replace 94 goals just from them… do you think those four guys will score 23-24? I think one, maybe two will crack the 20 goal mark. JVR might contribute more goals but that’s not a sure thing either.
they did the same thing when we lost Gagne when we lost Knuble when we lost Forsberg when we lost Lindros when we lost Recchi when we lost JR when we lost LeClair when we lost Renberg. .. its the same story every year.

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Philly fell apart pretty bad. Also, Cop&Blue’s analysis of the Tampa-Boston series shows Tampa actually controlling play / outchancing the Bruins in a lot of games (though the Bolts got manhandled in game 7).
The Bruins have 1 great Dman and had one of the best goalie performances of all time. But in a lot of ways they are a firewagon team.
Not that they didn’t deserve there cup or any crap like that. Like I said, they definitley outplayed Vancouver.

You have to be lucky to win in the playoffs, but sometimes I think we make to much of things like high shoot% in the playoffs being only luck driven. If you take one shot from the slot and score, or you bank in one rebound, and then play the trap the rest of the game, then your shoot% is 100 and it skews everything else.
Heres one: the Penguins were lucky against Detroit in ’09 because a Red Wing dinged the crossbar with 2 minutes left… except that the Penguins lost Crosby in the first period. So who was lucky?
Also, Fuck Carolina.

I actually think they have a pretty good chance.
Their biggest holes (aside from prospects of course) are on defense. They didn’t do so bad in this department last year though. They lose Regher, but they still have Boumeister, and if he can be solid positionally at the least, they won’t do too bad. Last year they were kind of ruined by Goaltending, and there’s no reason to believe Kipprusov is broken.. just had an off year.
They’ll be a very high scoring team I expect,
I can see them competing with Columbus, Dallas, and potentially St. Louis but I think they have the best shot of those teams
We’re going to be competitive, for sure. Not a top seed in the West, but we’ll be in the playoff mix.
"You said you didn't give a f#%k about hockey. And I never saw someone say that before..."
I just don’t really see where any improvement came this off-season? Gone is Regher, Morrison (good bang for buck), nobody new in, everybody a year older… They do play a good team game so maybe they’ll sneak in but I just don’t see where the strength is.
I don’t think they really improved over the off-season either.
I just think they got burned last season with bad luck in goal/early scoring.
Not that its a be-all-end-all, but if you look at my Win Threshold Series in Fanposts, their Treshold shows that when you factor in Shots Against (how good the defense are) and Goals For (how good the forwards are) they were actually second in the west (league too I think).
This is going to change obviously, and its not a be-all-end-all as I said, but its a good indicator.
Kipper just had a terrible year by his standards, he should rebound.
I don’t think they’re a contender by any means though, so they should really just blow it up and get some prospects
You could make the same argument for the Leafs? Bad luck in goal and scoring early in the season? They both had pretty similar trajectories throughout the year. Anyway, I live in Calgary so if the Flames play well, everybody is in a better mood haha so good luck to them.
Not really sure about that. If you have free time I recommend you check out the series I published. It was frontpaged last week, you can find it in fanposts now.
Leafs were pretty average in both categories by the end of the year. After the trade deadline their defense was awful though. It was just masked by good goalscoring and awesome goalies. A goalie can rescue any team, but some teams don’t need rescuing. Excluding all goalies, the flames are probably in the top 12 teams in the league. Their goalie usually is as good as their team, he just had a terrible year last year.
What I’m trying to say is something like..
Vancouver is a top 5 team with a top 5 goalie, so that puts them around #1-2
Detroit is a top 5 team with a top 20 goalie, so that puts them around #5-10
Pittsburgh is a top 5 team with a top 10 goalie, so that puts them around #1-5
Toronto is a top 15 team with whatever the fuck happens goalie, so our rank is directly based on our goalie.
Montrela is a top 20 team with a top 5 goalie, so that puts them around #10-15
Calgary is a top 10-12 team, with a top 10-20 goalie. Thus they should finish around 10-15. The problem is, last year their goalie didn’t play up to standards and so they fell below where they realistically should be.
I love the current 3rds. The Leafs coming out with new blue thirds, if they’re anything like Berger is suggesting, won’t impress. They’ll basically be the same uniforms as our current home one with a slightly different crest. Bummer.

I always thought that a 3rd jersey was supposed to be a pretty big departure from the norm. Here they’ve just added a 3rd stripe and made the leaf slightly different. I guess I just don’t see the point in making such a similar jersey to the regular ones.

one of the best defensive games in the NHL
Statistically? I dunno about that one. I’d love to see some #‘s backing this up but my hunch is that he’s not yet at that level. Not much doubt in my mind that he will get there in the next few years, but as of right now he does still get caught making mistakes he shouldn’t make from time to time.
I guess it might just be presumptuous, I was just kind of thinking how he led hits and blocked shots
Obviously there are better indicators and maybe i’ll look them up later
but you’re right, he can be more positionally sound
by Ben Schnell on Jul 15, 2011 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions
The good thing is that it’s really correctable mistakes he makes. The thing that comes to mind first is that sometimes he gets caught standing in no-man’s land watching the puck instead of bodying the guy waiting at the back door. He’s already tremendously improved his ability to patiently carry the puck and not force it up the ice when the opponent is trapping.
He’s comparable to (better than) Seabrook of 2008, who was 23 at the time.
He outperforms his expected zone shift, his shots against per 60 are lower than the Leafs as a team. In fact, his SA/60 are the second lowest among Leafs defensemen with > 30 GP. Gunnarsson’s SA/60 are the lowest but Schenn played against tougher competition.
by stevesmith19 on Jul 15, 2011 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I should add: Schenn’s ranking on the team is excluding Beauchemin and Kaberle because behindthenet.ca doesn’t list them on the Leafs page anymore.

Even by the end of the season Subban was maturing and played better D. In the playoffs he logged 36 minutes one game. He also got a hattrick in his rookie season as a D. He’s got a pretty good future ahead of him.
Carolson and Pietrangelo also can play a good two-way game. Neither is as defensively sound as Schenn, but they both may grow to be, which is why I think its a wash for either

Also pretty impressive that we have two guys on that list.
by Ben Schnell on Jul 15, 2011 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions
His even strengths points per 60 stats are pretty good. His point totals are lower because of a lack of powerplay time.
by stevesmith19 on Jul 15, 2011 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions
And to put it in perspective, a guy like Doughty (yes, he is more talented) gets a ridiculous number of offensive zone starts and plays on a better team.
by stevesmith19 on Jul 15, 2011 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions
I still don’t think he’s got much offensive upside. I think he maxes out around 25 points with maybe two or three seasons of 30 mixed in. He’s just not mobile enough and his puck skills, frankly, stink.
Pension Plan Puppets
I hope YouTube comes down to film this.
Well, not really. He regularly stickhandles around attacking players in the defensive zone. His ESP/60 is equal to that of Brent Seabrook when he was 23.
by stevesmith19 on Jul 15, 2011 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
He doesn’t stickhandle around opposing players. The only thing Schenn has done a better job of is defending the puck with his body. I saw major improvement in that area last year. But his actually stickhandling needs work, and most importantly, his skating.
Pension Plan Puppets
I hope YouTube comes down to film this.
Stickhandling probably wasn’t the right word. My bad.
But what he does is still a big part of puck skills. That’s one of the ways Crosby is able to so effectively control the puck along the boards – body positioning: getting his body in between opposing players and the puck.
I do hope his skating improves because that will really help take his game to the level we all hope he reaches.
by stevesmith19 on Jul 15, 2011 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions
You think even though he’s already put up 22 points on bad leafs teams at the age of 21 he will max out at 25 points?
thats 3 more assists over a year…
by Ben Schnell on Jul 15, 2011 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Not all players progress exponentially. I think Schenn was able to step into the NHL at 18 because of his physical maturity, he likes rough play, and he understands angles. He has average straight ahead speed, but his acceleration is not good. His stickhandling needs work and I don’t know if his shot will ever be all that great either. Schenn’s greatest gift is his ability to see and think the game, but the flaws in his fundamentals will hold him back from becoming a true top pairing, 2 way defenseman.
Pension Plan Puppets
I hope YouTube comes down to film this.
The biggest problem with his shot is that he telegraphs it like crazy. Guys know exactly when and where he’s going to shoot so it’s easy to block.

bring up your religious beliefs as an issue when no one else here cares what you believe
now if you wish to present your religious anti-gay beliefs that are insanely intolerant than you can expect an intolerant response.
being pro gay puts no one down and promotes equality for all mankind
if you are threatened by that then it is your problem, and if you cant deal with equality then you can kindly get the fuck out

That’s the thing. No one here is advocating homosexuals at the expense of any other group. Advocating one’s beliefs at the expense of another group is a diferent thing altogether I would say. No one else has to be marginalized in order for homosexuals to be treated equally and with respect.

FLYERROB, this has been a common misconception in the discussion over the past couple days. You can find several definitions of the word “homophobic” at this google link. The top three I’ve included below:
prejudiced against homosexual people
-Princeton.edu
(homophobe) a person who hates or fears homosexual people
-Princeton.edu
Homophobia is a range of negative attitudes and feelings towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and in some cases transgender and intersex people.
-Wikipedia
As you can see, even though “phobia” is in the word, homophobia is not strictly related to fear or unknowing. It’s simply a matter of prejudice. The above post of yours which I’ve replied to is factually incorrect.

well I am not either .. I dont hate.
since you asked. My viewpoint is this. I dont “HATE” gays, lesbians, transvestites, or Bisexual people.
My viewpoint based on my religious beliefs is that I love all people but I do not love the sin.
But that is my viewpoint and I am merely stating that so that I do not get any more people stating that I am a “HATER” because I am not.
When your child does something that you do not approve of and you correct that or remind them that its not approved of .. does that mean you hate your child ? no. So I am not a hater.
What I was getting at above was that in society today its “politically correct” to be gay.. but “unpopular” to be Christian.. and when people shower love and affection on gay people because its PC or popular but discriminating against Christians .. isn’t that bieng Biased and Discriminating? Christians are taught to love one another.. when did that become not popular or “UNP.C.” ?
While I know what the definitions are on line .. I know myself who I am and how I feel. .. and no one can take that away from me about my feelings in my heart.
so I hope this answers your question Bower Power.. Thats my viewpoint. Back to hockey.

Didn’t ask the viewpoint, didn’t really want to continue the discussion in this thread. I really didn’t have any questions in my post at all. I just wanted to let you know that when you said “actually, yes they are” the correct response would have been “jared, you’re right. they aren’t different.” Quite frankly, you aren’t allowed to change a word’s definition just because feelings in your heart tell you. If you are anti-gay, you are homophobic. Even if you’re not strictly afraid of homosexuals. When it comes to being opposed to equality based on personal beliefs, I would hope “those feelings” in your heart are mostly guilt.
Acceptance surrounding homosexuality has nothing to do with “political correctness,” except in the fact that promoting equality is always correct – it’s a founding tenant of the USA, though historically not a well-followed one.
In response to the last bit, I think someone posted this graphic here previously:
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being Christian. It’s certainly not “unpopular,” as it’s the dominant religion in America by a long shot. There’s something wrong when someone’s religion allows them to justify being opposed to equality, then for them to run away saying “I’m free to say whatever I want! This is Americaaaaa!” Or even worse, saying “I love everyone, but those gays really shouldn’t have equal rights.”
I know and understand that you’d like to have your viewpoint represented as some sort of “last word on the issue.” If you’d like to keep talking about it or respond to this post in any way, feel free to use my e-mail address, which you can find on my profile page.

This is true. Homophobic is a fear and hatred of gays. Anti-gay doesn’t mean you hate them, you just don’t want them to have equal rights and privileges as those you consider “normal”.
Is that sarcastic? What reason would there to be to deny someone basic human rights other than hate?

Or maybe it is cynicism.
There just are those that I have met and talked to who say they don’t hate homosexuals but don’t want them held in the same breath. They don’t want to accept it is natural and feel the problem can and should be corrected rather than accepted. It holds a cold rationality to it that I would say separates it every so slightly from hate and fear.
I think they’re just in denial about their hate/fear. It allows them to justify their stupidity within the confines of “Love thy neighbour”.

Hockey Question
Who do you guys rank as the top 10 goalies in the league right now? I don’t mean who has the best all time record or anything.. I mean who would you have right now, and feel most comfortable with? I try to make these lists all the time but I have a hard time factoring everyone in, so I’d like to see some opinions. Mine would go something like this:
1. Henrik Lunqvist
2. Tim Thomas
3. Pekka Rinne
4. Roberto Luongo
5. Jonas Hiller
6. Carey Price
7. Jonathon Quick
8. Cam Ward
9. Ilya Bryzgalov
10. Marc-Andre Fleury
and do current contracts come into play?

think like 2-3 years. Who is the best right now? Sure, Thomas just put the best stats ever, but he might not keep it up next year, and as he gets older. This question is:
who do you want as your goalie to take you to the playoffs/cup right now?
Don’t think about prospects and the like
if the Leafs 3 year window started this year, and I had my pick, i take Rinne

I’m a big Bryzgalov fan, Rob. Really – I watched a handful of Phoenix games last year, love his positioning, love his decision making, and am excited that he’ll get a lot more press coverage. But Phoenix is not a “barely above average” team in their own zone – their defensive play is how they won games. And Bryzgalov’s 2.5 out of 4 good years (his opening numbers on Anaheim the year he was traded were a measly .909) do not trump the abilities or expected abilities of Price, Rinne, or Hiller, and certainly not Lundqvist.
This is where a witty signature might go.

Lundvqist has a career post season average of .915 if you discount his rookie year (13 GA in 3 GP), including a .917 last year, with .908, .909, and .924 the years before. Two years are great, two are slightly below average. To hell with whatever Bryzgalov put up, you’re straight up wrong on the Lundqvist comment.

Nope. If you say “it’s my opinion that the sky is green,” it just means that you hold a dumb – and wrong – opinion. This whole idea that everyone’s opinion is equal and valuable is stupid, and coddles terrible ideas. An opinion or comment can absolutely be wrong, if it’s informed by faulty information or reached by faulty logic. I hate when someone says “Well that’s just my opinion.” They’re just trying to admit defeat without admitting defeat, and they should man up and just say they were mistaken. It’d do a world of good for everyone.

Slightly different, but since I’ve waded into nuance already: In that case, it’s their perception that the sky is green (or their observation? I dunno which would be more accurate), but it’s not their opinion.

You’re allowed to say you like Bryz better than those other goalies. That’s an opinion. You could even say you’d rather have him on your team. Although I don’t know why you would want an inferior goalie but you could say that.
But the reason you like Bryz better is because he is a member of the Flyers and thus have an emotional investment in his performance and abilities.

and I quote…
The following are six good achievements made by the Third Reich that radically set the stage for future advancement in many particular fields, sciences, and social norms.
1.) No smoking! Hitler was vehemently anti-smoking. The Nazi’s were also the first to link smoking to the contraction of cancer. Source.
2.) The Hitler Mobile? Hitler wanted every German, whether rich or poor, to have a car. And thus he invented the Volkswagen ("People’s Car"). Source.
3.) Spare some change? Before coming into power in 1933, mass unemployment crippled the German economy. The global depression of that era made it so that a wheelbarrow full of money couldn’t even buy a loaf of bread. When the Nazis stormed on to the scene, they put everyone back to work. Over night, the wheels of the economy were turning once more and money was flowing back into people’s pockets. Source.
4.) It’s his way or the highway! Every time you hop on to the freeway to get somewhere faster than taking all the back roads, thank Hitler. That’s right, Hitler invented the highway system ("Autobahn" in German). Source.
5.) This little light of mine… I’m gunna let it shine! The Olympic torch relay ceremony was Hitler’s idea for the 1936 Berlin Olympic games. We haven’t since gotten rid of the ceremony. Source.
6.) Save the whales! Hitler and many top Nazis were environmentalist types who cared deeply about animals and their rights. The Nazis were among the first to put in place laws protecting animals from abuse. Source.
Aside from the above examples are many countless others wherein Hitler used his extraordinary power as dictator to push both good and evil policies. Again, it’s important to realize the "yin yang" concept as alluded to prior when attempting to make sense of such information concerning the person and achievements of Adolf Hitler.

I was trying to think about this myself.
1. Lundqvist
2. Thomas
3. Luongo
4. Hiller
5. Vokoun
6. Rinne
7. Bryzgalov
8. Price
9. Backstrom
10. Ward
11. Miller
12. Fleury
13. Quick
14. Neuvirth
15. Pavelec
I’m a huge Rinne and Bryzgalov fan. It’s tough when we say “right now,” though. My list changes a ton if you start accounting for age and projected expectations 3-5 years out (Price shoots up the list, as do Quick, Neuvirth Pavelec, and Crawford, Thomas drops off it, Luongo plummets, etc.). This is a tough list to make, and if I did it again ten minutes from now, I’d probably get a different list again.
This is where a witty signature might go.
This is where a witty signature might go on drugs.
I’d like to swap Vokoun to #3 and Luongo to #5. Putting up a .913 last year was killer, even if he bounced back.
This is where a witty signature might go.

Scrolling to the bottom of that list makes me want to chew off my own foot.

With the exception of how low Lundqvist is, that looks a lot like my list, and reinforces the idea that Vokoun shouldn’t be as low as 5th. I’ve probably underrated Miller and Price, but screw them (this is why I don’t try to do what The Goalie Guild does).
This is where a witty signature might go.
This is where a witty signature might go on drugs.
What the hell are “Goalie point shares”? Whatever they are, they put Luongo in first so they must be pretty great and totally relevant
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Pretty sure its the percent of average points that can be directly related to the goalie. So if you take Schneider’s 24 games or whatever and the rest of Luongo’s, and Schneider goes 16-8, he would have 32 points. Buf if Vancouver gets 128 points one year or something, then that’s only a 25% points share. That means Luongo has the other 75%, going 48-10
Hockey question II
Okay so on the other side, who would you take as a franchise goalie for the next 10+ years?
Names off the top of my head include: Reimer, Holtby, Neurvth, Varlarmov, Pavelec, Bernier, Schneider, Rask,
and any other goalie who’s young enough from the ove lists. here is mine:
1. Price
2. Quick
3. Rask
4. Pavelec
5. Quick
6. Reimer
7. Schneider
8. Bernier
9. Neurvth
10. Lunqvist
11. Hasek
In which case...
Price
Schneider
Quick
Rask
Pavelec
Crawford
Bernier
Reimer
Halak
Howard
Holtby
The First Certified Grabbo Lover
No Neuvirth? I’d say a 48 start .914 season has to get him a spot on that list.

Tampa didn’t sign Rolo to a 5 year plus deal. Just because he’s playing for their team doesn’t make him a “franchise goalie.” We’re talking about who would you want to have locked into your team (no “he retires in 5 years!” crap) for the next 5-7 years.

He doesn’t do it for the pat on the back, and anyone who knows anything knows he deserves a high amount of credit for Vancouver’s recent cup runs. If it were easy to get a #2 and #3 pick in the draft, everyone with a #1 pick would try to do it. I hate to project my own thoughts, but I doubt Burke is worried about what Vancouver fans think about him at this point.
But yeah, it’d be nice to have some stability. If we really do turn the corner in the next 4 years, I imagine Nonis will be around for a while, and even if he isn’t, his combined GM and A-GM time will be quite long. The sport just doesn’t lend itself to longevity. Though I agree with Skinny – Lamoriello probably isn’t the guy you want to use as an example.
This is where a witty signature might go.
This is where a witty signature might go on drugs.
I by no means think Lamoriello is the best GM or anything. If you check my OP i just mean he’s around forever and is called the best. I know Burke doesn’t do things for credit, he does it to win. But I like Burke and I like the direction he’s taking the team so I would prefer if he or Nonis could stay around for a while, instead of new GMs every couple years.
All great GMs have to be a little bit of lucky. McKegg having such a good post-draft year was pretty lucky. If Phaneuf plays lights out next year that’s lucky. Ken Holland is mega lucky, just like Lamoriello. But it’s nice to have a figure head you can be confident in. Sure, Lamoriello had Brodeur land in his lap. But he also had Larrsson somehow land in his lap. I’m not say he did anything to do either of those things, but you can only say that track recording is misleading for so long until it becomes true.
Yeah, I get what you mean (though Burke is no more lucky should McKegg pan out than any other GM drafting). And as lucky as Lou got with Brodeur, it’s still a challenge to build a good team around a goalie, even if that’s a defensive team (FLA/Vokoun comes to mind most recently, but there are others, right Ubiquitous?).
This is where a witty signature might go.

Nice article about Tim Horton.
My favourite part is actually Jim Schoenfeld talking about what Horton taught him as a rookie about playing D:
“The biggest thing he taught me was to time your departure from the offensive zone, so that you’re matching the speed of the forwards in the neutral zone,” Schoenfeld says. "It was all about timing; the old term is ‘standing the guys up’, but there’s a misnomer there, where you think it’s just standing flat-footed and lunging at the forward and you get toasted on either side. But it’s really where you give the forward a little ice, and once you come to the point of no return, you take him out. Once I got it, it really made things easier for my game because I spent a lot less time in the defensive zone. And even if a guy beat you, he was often off-sides. I’d want to back up all the time, but Timmy’s thing was always ‘No, you’ve got to hold the line.’
He kept teaching me, and it was invaluable."
So few people really get this. Nice to see Horton did.

The ability to do subtle things like being able to anticipate the play as it goes through transition can make a less skilled defender invaluable, and an inability to do so can make a skilled one expendable. It always just seemed to make sense to me when I played that the less your play relied on reacting, the better off you’d be. Certainly does seem to be pretty rare.
Glad you posted that article. Made for a good read at the end of a slow day.

I was on the other end, I always found there was a timing thing to getting defenders to give you a lane, a stutter step or sharp upper body turn at the right second to falsify direction or speed increase was always something I was looking to use in a one on one situation.
But I had speed to burn so usually i just dipped one way and turned on the jets.
Coming up against a defender who understood timing (if they consciously knew it or not) was always a fun little game of chess though. it was way more satisfying to beat one of them

I always watch the sternum. 99% of fakes are with the head, shoulders or hands. Stay in front of the sternum and he’s going nowhere.
I wish we could have a PPP scrimmage in TO some day.

My only strength is being fast (compared to others in my league) so if you got close enough you’d probably rob me.
i have no wheels anymore, i rely on a power game to keep the puck

I’m trying to get better at protecting/keeping it when I have it, my stickhandling isn’t that strong and I skate head down alot.
I played last night for the first time in about 4 months.
Cardio was fine but my timing was awful. All night, I couldn’t line-up a long pass or hit a one-timer.

cardio is a weird thing for me, I can run 3-4 miles just fine, but I skate at full speed for 30 seconds and im dead nuts tired

Yeah, two totally different kinds of fitness. I do fine if we only have 2 or 3 D and I have to go half-pace but without breaks, but I’m dying if we have subs and I need to go full intensity for a minute or two.

I’ve been playing ball hockey twice a week this summer. It’s amazing for cardio. No gliding, always running. If you’re out for more than a minute, you’re toast.
Switched to ice hockey last night, was floored that a few guys were staying out for 4 or 5 minute shifts.

That would be great.
If I’m out for 4-5 minutes (or more) it’s only because there’s no one to relieve me. On a team of lawyers our no-show rate hovers around 50% (as Dellow can attest).

No, we actually inherited it from another group of guys who effectively retired. Their jersey had a Griffin on it. The team name was therefore Merv.
Our jerseys are totally different now so the name is just randomly bizarre.

Haha, all the law school people I know always try to come up with really clever names for their sports teams.
my intermural softball team name last year was the Mustard Tigers

That's not cardio then
That’s more a peak power thing
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
In March, I played with a ref for the first time in about 4 years. I’d dicked around at some pickups before (goalie), but it wasn’t until I was in a game situation that I realized all my equipment is either too small (leg pads) or broken to the point where it’s not staying where it should. Toss that in with being overweight and out of shape, and the 40 shots against for each of the next 4 games I played were not okay.
Up side: I get to go gear side, and I have enough money now to go all out (new pro spec pads, chest protector that fits / is my style, etc.). Down side: there isn’t anywhere near me for miles that has both the Vaughn and Brians set that I want to try on.
This is where a witty signature might go.

Yeah. A couple shots through my fivehole because the only way I can close it is basically if my knees are touching. I’ve pretty much decided I’m not allowed to go play until I get new gear, because I’ll end up picking up some nasty habits.

mmmmm. I would love it. I’ve never bothered to get a mask painted, but I’ve had a couple thoughts on one. I definitely can’t afford a custom paint job in the middle of decking out everything else, though =(

but I’m glad we brought in Dupuis ( despite his douchiness)… more 3rd/4th liner competition means the cream rises to the top.

oh and Boyce
and Zigomanis might both end up on the Marlies… they had their UFA chance to move to other clubs and nobody offered them 1 way deals is my guess… so why bother moving in that case?
