PPP Podcast 15: Leaf Trades, UFAs and Miracles

This sure looks like a photoshop.

It's been nearly four months since the site overlords and I sat down to do a podcast and discuss all things Leafs.

Over those 120 days some incredible things have happened - Kaberle won a Cup, Vancouver lost the Cup, Brett Lebda was traded, and PPP was (temporarily?) overthrown from his own blog.

Joins us as Chemmy, PPP and I discuss all this and more (the mystery of Mahi Mahi, PPP's Brett Lebda tattoo) in PPP Podcast 15.

Star-divide

Track Listing

  1. The Hold Steady - Hot Soft Light
  2. Pavement - Summer Babe
  3. The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
  4. The Jayhawks - Waiting for the Sun
  5. The Islands - Rough Gem
  6. Janis Joplin - Summertime
  7. Little Milton - Grits Ain't Groceries
  8. Günther - Tutti Frutti Summer Love
  9. Frank Sinatra - Summer Wind

I saw the Jayhawks at Lee’s Palace about 10 years ago. The weather was so hot, the band had electric fans on stage and staff were handing out bottled water. It felt like the rubberized floor was actually melting.

It was a great show (not as good as Gary Louris with Golden Smog at the Horseshoe though…).

by mf37 on Jul 21, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Colour me jealous.

I’ve actually never checked out Golden Smog despite meaning to for a few years now. I have no excuse. I’d be shocked if they weren’t awesome.

At the Golden Smog show, Jeff Tweedy played the first half wearing an Adidas balaclava.

So many great shows at Lee’s Palace over the years. Luna multiple times, including their farewell show. Was there recently for the Radio Dept, great show.

Before they banned smoking indoors in TO it was ridiculous how easy it was to get away with ‘contraband’ in there. They just didn’t care.

Congratulations Tomas!

I don’t think it was in Toronto, but I read about a heckler at a Ryan Adams show yelling out ‘Run to You’ and ‘Summer of ‘69’ etc (which is awesome), and Ryan Adams stopped the show and wouldn’t continue until the heckler was escorted out. Saw Whiskeytown at the Horseshoe with Oh Susannah and Fastball (what a crazy line-up).

Whiskeytown played two sets: their first sounded like Husker Du, the second was just Adams and Caitlin Cary and was amazing…

by mf37 on Jul 21, 2011 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I would have loved to have seen them (bit too young while they were still about).

As much as I enjoy stuff like Husker Du, I’ve always preferred when Whiskeytown sounded a bit more like Gram Parsons (or whatever) and less like the Replacements (who I love, just not sure it suited Adams)

by Self Destructive Zones on Jul 21, 2011 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Saw him solo at the Horseshoe right after Heartbreaker came out and he was totally cool. Took requests, it was a great show.

I think that’s a pretty common way to evaluate trades ie: “We turned Stalberg, Dido, and Paradis into Versteeg, and two draft picks.” or whatever it was.

The Leafs are my Rushmore
Certified Grabbo Lover and member of the PPPPP

by Plea From A Cat Named Felix on Jul 21, 2011 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

True, that line of thinking is certainly a logical fallacy… much like calling in poker for the simple fact that you’ve already invested a lot in the pot is a stupid decision. Money spent is money spent whether you get it back or not.

That said, the nice thing about doing it with trades is that it gives the franchise a sense of continuity, which is always nice to see as a fan.

Let the Wookie win.
Twitter is a thing!

by Kenjamin on Jul 21, 2011 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s pretty uncontroversial to say turning that trio into Versteeg was an “up” trade.

There’s more debate on the return for Versteeg himself, but his market value not long after we traded him makes it look a little cleverer. Connecting that return to Stalberg, DiDomenico, and Paradis at all is fallacious though, however common.

I feel like sunk costs would affect the GM decision making process more so than the fan evaluating the trade.

The Leafs are my Rushmore

by Plea From A Cat Named Felix on Jul 21, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

right, but those trades need to be evaluated independently. what we got for Versteeg shouldn’t be evaluated on the basis of what we spent on him; it should be evaluated based on whether we got the most value for him that we could at the the time. in that sense it was a win. if what we paid for him was also a win, then it’s all the better, but it shouldn’t change the evaluation of the trade.

Move along. Nothing to see here...

by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Jul 21, 2011 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

You may be right, but I see no harm in evaluating deals by various means.

Yes. This is the point I was trying to make.

Purveyor of Pension Plan Puppets Podcast Post-Production

by puckurgently on Jul 21, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

trades 1 and 2 should be evaluated independently of each other. what was paid for versteeg is a sunk costs that should have no bearing on the value of future trades.

Move along. Nothing to see here...

by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Jul 21, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

If it is the same GM making the trades, however, it is a way of tracking an overall effect. Suppose you thought the trade for Versteeg was a bad one, but the trade sending him away was a good one. Condensing the trade down to “Stalberg et al for draft picks” can give you a sense of whether the two trades together turned into a net positive or negative.

But it’s a complement, not a substitute, to evaluating each trade separately.

by Lemonstyx on Jul 21, 2011 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree, because it’s not just about the individual trade, it’s about asset management. If a GM can turn a pile of gold into a pile of copper, it isn’t really relevant to me how many steps he took in between – turning gold to copper is a bad deal.

I'm on Twitter too! - draglikepull

by Draglikepull on Jul 21, 2011 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I tend to agree. You can and should evaluate the trades separately, but you also need to track the ‘asset history’. Absurd example:

You trade Crosby for a 2nd round pick. Bad trade.
You trade that 2nd round pick for Anze Kopitar. Good trade.

that’s one really bad trade and one good trade. overall though turning Crosby into Kopitar is a disaster.

Congratulations Tomas!

by daoust on Jul 21, 2011 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you hit the nail on the head

It is important to consider both and don’t let one over shadow the other.

Asset management is important. Individual trades are important. One is more big picture, the other is more present focussed.

I disagree because I always liked the idea that the #1 pick in 1985 netted the Leafs 9 seasons from Wendel Clark and 13 seasons from Mats Sundin.
One of the reasons I was especially disappointed that Mats didn’t accept a trade was that I had the superstitious hope that the cycle would go in perpetuity resulting in a constant stream of awesome Leaf captains whose acquisition could be traced directly back to the Leafs picking Wendel back in 1985.

Is there a requirement to get to be on the podcast itself or is it just whoever happens to be around at the time?

Daoust, you still in here?

You’ve used the word contraband so many times in this thread that we need to organize a PPP meet up post haste.

i'm here

to be fair, it was only two times. but for sure a PPP rendezvous early in the season sounds like a good idea to me.

Congratulations Tomas!

Only twice? Damn

You’re on my Official “PPP CTRL-F List” so I must have skimmed one of the same posts twice. Regardless I would have mentioned it if you only brought it up once.

Pardon my rambling logic, contraband to the dome all afternoon.

‘contraband to the dome’, I like it. we used to call it ‘stalk in the craw’ back in the day.

Congratulations Tomas!

Awesome
Chemmy: We kicked PPP off the podcast for being a fuckface.
MF: Oh come on now. I think he’s doing something more important. Watching a soccer game or something.
Chemmy: I’m pretty sure I said that more concisely.

next time you ‘kick him out for being a fuck face’ or he’s going to be late, just have one of us randoms join in. we may not be on the mast head, but we’re 99% fuckface free.

Chemmy and I spent the first 12 minutes waiting for PPP and we ended up discussing air conditioning options and their impact on housing re-sale value.

I wish I was making this up.

I’m sorry that wasn’t part of the podcast. We just installed split unit air conditioners on our third floor, it would have been topical.

Congratulations Tomas!
