The Komisarek Kountdown

Hey there folks, Death_By_Leafs checking in again after a somewhat looooong hiatus. The events of the last few days have given me the itch again to read & talk Leafs as we lead into the pre-season, wide-eyed and optimistic. I mean, my goodness, Lebdalebdalebda is no more!

(Sidebar: I looked through my history to see when I was last on. My last comments here included such prophetical gems as:
"Godamnit Lebda"
"lebda you are suck."
"'I don’t know what Lebda was doing' -Greg Millen; Dec 16, 2010 <-- Thank you for saying what we are all thinking. All the time.")

So after last night's trade, many analysts have made mention that Toronto Maple Leaf Cody Franson now gives a Top 6 with some combination of Phaneuf, Liles, Aulie, Franson, Gunnarsson, and Schenn (assuming he is re-signed without incident). With the additional upstart group led by Blacker, Gardiner, and others, the poor cap casualty known as Mike Komisarek -- barring any major rebirth of his game -- will clearly be the odd man out.

So I decided to try and math my way into seeing when we might see the end of Komisarek in a Maple Leaf uniform. Based on Komisarek's salary structure, he can become attractive to poor teams once his cash obligation drops below his remaining cap hit.

Salary 2011-2012 = $5.5m
Salary 2012-2013 = $3.5m
Salary 2013-2014 = $3.5m

Cap 2012-2013 = $4.5m
Cap 2013-2014 = $4.5m

The 2011-2012 season runs from for 185 days (Oct 6 to Apr 7), which means Komisarek's daily salary is $29,729.73. Thus, after 118 days, Komisarek will have been paid $3,508,108.11 leaving $1,991,891.89 remaining for the year.

$1,991,891.89 + $3,500,000.00 + $3,500,000.00 = $8,991,891.89, which is the first day that the remaining salary obligations to Komisarek will be less than his $9 million cap over the final 2 seasons.

That day, #118, will be January 31, 2012.

Now I'm not saying I'm desperate to get rid of the guy, and I'm not saying that he can't be a worthwhile player for an NHL team, but I think most of us will agree that Komisarek has not fit the role that was assumed when he was signed. However, if we are expecting Komisarek to be dumped off for little return, this is the earliest it will probably happen.

As always, Go Leafs Go.

It’s true that Jan 31st, his cap hit is more than his salary but only by a couple of bucks. Teams aren’t going to sign him just to save a couple of bucks. Much more likely he is traded at the end of the season (save 2 million)

he’s not as bad as you think he is.

He'll be a decent 7th defenceman

But nothing more.

disagree. If he learns to play within his limits and simply play physical, he’’ll be fine in a 2nd or 3rd pairing. What gives him a bad name are his poor decisions and untimely turnovers. He needs to be paired with a puck mover, and if he has to clear the puck he needs to learn to put it up the boards/off the glass, instead of up the middle of the ice on to an opponent’s stick. The man is huge. Once he stops trying to do too much, he will emerge as a great shut down guy. The leafs are a puck possession team, he may not fit prefectly with that concept, but he can still make it work if he plays smart.

Stay away from bidding wars

Komisarek is a classic example of what happens when you overevaluate a developing dman. He was doing just fine in Montreal, playing within himself. Then his agent figured time to cash in and we were desperate enough wanting to win the Komisarek Sweepstakes that so many teams were bdding on, and we rolled out the Brinks truck.

Memo: Stay away from those kind of bidding wars, as this is what will happen.

Now he’s being paid top dollar and can’t handle the pressure so he’s forcing. He was never worth that kind of coin and never will be.

Now are we trying to give up our next five years of draft picks for Stamkos? Stamkos is a damned good player, but no one is worth that much.

agree. Burke got in a bidding war during last year’s free agent frenzy. He was so desperate to rebuild the team after blowing it up, he forced himself to bring in a large shutdown D man that he so covets. This past frenzy he didn’t get caught up in as may bidding wars that resulted in gross overpayment, and made smart choices with short term low money contracts, comparatively. Komi will never live up to the money, but he can still be a decent D man for us. People are so hard on him that the pressure is making him choke. Peeps need to relax, step back, and support him. This attitude also applies to the whole team. Young rebuilding teams need support, not hate. POSITVE ENERGY. LOVE AND LEAFS!

I wish the Stamkos thing would just go away. If he were an elite setup guy, then I say go for it. But he’s not, so just let it be. not worth the sacrifical draft picks.

At least Burke seems to have learned that lesson.

Yes I suppose you all are right

I think with our depth on defence this year, Komi won’t have to play such big minutes, as well as be put in such pressure filled situations. This way, he can take a step back, play his game, and hopefully have a more consistent year.
