I have trouble taking the article about our forwards seriously when the writer asserts our second line is most likely to be Mac/Grabs/Lupul. Sounds like he’s done the typical thing and gone ‘best three forwards = FIRST LINE next best forwards = SECOND LINE’.

Its been really long since I’ve been to Waterloo (since my when I go back I visit my family that now lives in kitchener/cambridge) even though I lived there since I was 9 and until I moved to the US. But, I bet St.Jacobs is just considered part of the city now. I remember a time when it was a drive to go out to the farmer’s market there.

Its a 5ish minute walk from the edge of my subdivison to the market (15 minutes from my house but I live in the middle of the subdivision not the end)…

And St Jacobs refused to become part of Waterloo so we have built right up to the edge of their town line.

Does anyone know

how the prospect camp is going? Any one look suprisingly good?

by Ben Schnell on Jul 8, 2011 8:42 AM EDT reply actions

There were a few articles in the Star about it. Apparently Blacker and Gardiner impressed, Brad Ross was pissing off everyone, and some undrafted kid there on a tryout was impressive. I’ll have to look up the name.

Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.
Lebda-free since July 3.

by nhlcheapshot on Jul 8, 2011 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Mitchell Heard I think is the kid's name

Article from the Sun on it here:

Hughes doesn’t have final word on the non-drafted players, but a contender has to be the Bowmanville native Heard.

"He did a good job this week, (but) we have all our draft picks we need to give an opportunity to grow and develop. We’ll grab some invites and get them into the mix."

http://www.torontosun.com/2011/07/07/leafs-prospects-go-all-out

Another German kid apparently stood out, Martin Buchwieser

The camp’s first fight on Thursday involved a 5-foot-10 German, Martin Buchwieser, who is looking for a shot down the road in the Leafs’ system. The left winger had a lively scrap with 6-foot-3 Kevin Tansey from Cumberland of the Eastern Ontario-based Central Canada League.
"I’m not afraid to fight if I have to. I don’t really know how it started today. We were half-looking at each other and decided ‘let’s go’. But I don’t care if he’s bigger."

The 22-year-old had 43 points in 47 games playing at home last year. He is one of three Germans who were ostensibly invited just for the North American experience, along with Adler Mannheim forward Matthias Plachta and defenceman Florian Kettemer.

look at this trade proposal from the Lashoff article on MLHS

Jay_Berg [Moderator] Yesterday 05:05 PM
Alright we have tons of depth. Let’s trade some of it to get stamkos and be on our way:

      To Tor: stamkos, prospect

To TB: Aulie, kulemin, Bozak, 1st

I know everyone is going to freak out and say this is an overpayment. We are getting a 21 year old generational talent. Gotta overpay And 5 years from now nobody will give a shit about those players we are giving up. They are replaceable

And an even better response

Pent_House [Moderator] Yesterday 05:09 PM in reply to Jay_Berg
a generational talent who is average without st.louis and underwhelming in the playoffs?

by nhlcheapshot on Jul 8, 2011 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. But here’s a thought: let’s say Stamkos’ price (based on a potential offer sheet) has been established at 4 first round picks.

Would this not come close to being equivalent to 4 first round picks, given that many first round picks end up as bottom six players or don’t even make it to the NHL? Or is the appeal of the 4 first round picks the fact that those picks are unused and therefore could be better than Kulemin et al?

Just getting opinions.

by stevesmith19 on Jul 8, 2011 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I think its the fact that TBL would be stupid to let Stamkos go even for 4 1st round picks so that ISN’T his value.

by WizardofNaz on Jul 8, 2011 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

There is nothing you could say that would make a statement of “Kulemin is valuable enough to not trade him for Stamkos” Justifiable

by WizardofNaz on Jul 8, 2011 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Right. It’s Kulemin+++ though. I’m probably putting his words in his mouth but that might be what he was trying to say.

by stevesmith19 on Jul 8, 2011 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Any deal would probably start with Kuli, Schenn and Kadri and go from there… TBL would be crucified if it was anything less.

Hence the deal isn’t going to happen

If he's still not signed in September it'll be newsworthy. Now it's just part of the process.

Seems this time of year there is always a bit of game of chicken with big name RFAs – wait and see what other teams offer their RFAs, then use those as comparables.

Puck Daddy yesterday had a post about how the negotiations are going well, both sides say they’re getting closer, and Meehan says negotiations are at a point where it doesn’t make sense to consider an offer-sheet. People will speculate anyway, because once a rumour involves the Leafs it never goes away (Jeff Carter was almost traded to the Leafs about 10 times, if we believe everything we read).

Slow hockey news day, let's throw out a random trade suggestion

Sergei Bobrovsky “reportedly” has been put on the block.

Now, lately all the news and reporting from Philly has been just outrageous, especially in regards to Stamkos – but at least this makes sense. Kid is 22 and now behind a 9 year megadeal for Bryzgalov.

Varlamov (injury prone but very good #s) just got traded for a 1st and a 2nd from a currently low-standings team in COL. That deal has the potential to be a disaster, or maybe they got their franchise goalie. Who knows.

I don’t think Philly would be dealing from any position of strength here, and I imagine they wouldn’t expect the same type of return. If they deal Bobrovsky, they could either go with a backup in Leighton who they have signed for one more year, or take a goalie back in the deal, or hire one of the remaining FA goalies on the cheap.

I’m not sure how a Reimer/Bobrovsky tandem would work – both young goalies, both have talent, both only have a handful of games under their belt. Unproven but have shown potential to be great goalies.

Any interest out there? Let me start by saying any suggestion NOT HAVE GUSTAVSSON GOING BACK THE OTHER WAY. IMO he has minimal trade value, and not including him makes a deal more interesting. I can’t imagine Philly would be ecstatic with him as a backup any more than many of us currently do.

Crazy would be NOT overanalyzing everything.

Interesting, Bob looks like a very good goalie though. A tandem with those 2 would be interesting.

by TheCeej on Jul 8, 2011 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Im all for it.
If Reimer isn’t the real deal then we hope Bobrovsky is.
if you look at the list I posted, they’re both up there, and there are only 11 goalies in the last 10 years, so I think its a worthy gamble
it obviously depends on the asking price
but until one of them establishes themselves as a super #1 goalie then we run the platoon, and once one does (hopefully Reimer) you deal the other in a Halak deal.
I dont think Montreal was upset having two great goalies last year.

by Ben Schnell on Jul 8, 2011 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d worry about sending back a goalie (Scrivens, Rynnas, hell even Gustavsson) as it would feel like Rask for Raycroft all over again.

by nhlcheapshot on Jul 8, 2011 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

But again if you look at the Montreal example, I think they probably made the right choice
but they didnt deal either of them as prospects, they waited til both were established
which i think is the right route

by Ben Schnell on Jul 8, 2011 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d do Gustavsson for Bobrovsky but Philly likely wants something like a 7th round pick.

ok… you have to ask yourself.. why would the FLYERS do a trade like that ? sure it makes Toronto better … but how does it make the FLYERS better ?

No…. Holmgren will not do that.

Boston has Thomas and Raask both are highly paid

so if your argument is money… were under cap and Holmgren referenced this the other day on sports radio about the Salaries of both Goalies being in the Million Dollar amounts is philly prepared to pay for a million dollar back up and he mentioned the Boston goalie situation and that their salaries are high for both goalies as well.

So .. .Unless Paul Holmgren is selling a story and hiding a possible trade (Which he does allot) .. I doubt we are trading The “BOB” any time soon.

First of all I dont get a shit about the flyers
if they dont want to have goalies that’s their own problem and they can deal with it
If they would have opened their eyes and gotten a good goalie though it sure woulda helped

IMO that’s what bob was.. he’s super young has a relatively good chance to be a good goalie
then they went and fucked up their team by trading away all their good players for a ‘youth movement’, which would be fine I guess but then sign a 30 year old goalie to be your goalie for 10 years til he’s 40? that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

And then when you put the fact that he’ll be 39 and under contract still with the fact that Bob is young and good, and then include the fact that they traded away their winning pieces.. its lunacy

If I’m Bobrovsky I walk in 4 years when I’m UFA cuz Bryz is still under contract for 5 years and I can get a payday elsewhere. Same with if I’m Schnieder

5… so that is one.

by WizardofNaz on Jul 8, 2011 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah campbell is one that I was thinking of, but again, there are specific reasons behind it
Florida needed to reach the floor and Chicago needed to escape the cap, so they were doing each other favourites
plus there was no NMC, and he was signed well above value.. everyone agreed it was a poor contract
AND HE WAS TRADED TO THE SAME GUY WHO ORIGINALLY SIGNED HIM

not really the same IMO, but we can count that as 1/3

by Ben Schnell on Jul 8, 2011 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

by Ben Schnell on Jul 8, 2011 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah completely weird..
except that Richards is an elite #1-C who is super young and signed to a below-value contract.. frankly he’s WAY more covetted than Bryzgalov

If you’re at the point where you’re trading Bryzgalov, that means that either Bobrovsky is the next Partrick Roy, or Bryzgalov is broken, and if its the latter then he’s not going to be tradable

by Ben Schnell on Jul 8, 2011 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

How long do you reasonably expect? 5 years at least? 6? Bob will then have been a 6-7 year backup… think he’ll be happy with that?

the only way I can see this making any sense for Philly is if they plan on Bryz Giguering,
that is to say that Giguere was a fantastic goalie and signed a lucrative contract, then got broken and is just kinda hanging around right now

If this happens with Bryzgalov.. which it very well could considering he’s signed for 10 years and is already old… then Bob can slide in and take over.

but why the fuck would you sign him for so long if that’s going to be the case? And when he’s just hanging around he’s going to be a cap burden

The last 4 years of that contract contain 14M for Bryz. If anything, he retires with two years left. That’s still a seven year deal.

I want the league to put in a rule in the next CBA that makes any deal longer than 5 years that tails off at the end $$ wise (and maybe takes them past 35) count against the cap regardless if someone retires (barring injury). And I want them to NOT grandfather these old contracts in. Finally the league will allow teams to admit that these deals were intended to circumvent the cap and the league will void them. However they’d give them the same punishment they gave the NJD.

I’d take out the part that the offending team gets to pick which year they give up their pick in.

I don’t care much about that option, because teams like Philly have 2 contracts (Pronger and Bryz) that they’d probably void so they’d lose 2 firsts

However someone like Yzerman might be able to void Lecav’s without any repercussions because its a whole new front office so they could come up and say “we didn’t sign this deal, however we have reason to believe when signed the player didn’t intend to fulfill it…”

Bryzgalov has 9 years to go, and will be off the team when he’s 40. 5.67 cap hit.

I also think Schneider gets moved. But if I had to pick between Bryz and Luongo, contract in hand? I think I’d take Bryzgalov’s.

Plus Luongo is a damn good goalie, and while Bryz is too, i dont think he’s in the same realm

That’s probably the source of our disagreement. Luongo’s up-and-down seasons of extraordinary to league average, versus Bryzgalov’s 3-of-last-4-seasons-at-920+ are a big tipping point for me. I discount his recent playoff performance as a particularly small sample size, (combined with being fairly outclassed when you compare the teams).

Does QualComp Matter?

Not really according to Dirk Hoag.

The comments are worth reading here. Corsi doesn’t correlate inversely with QoC basically because good players face good competition, so the positives (good player) balance out the negatives (facing tough comp).

So it’s not that QoC doesn’t matter, it’s that it doesn’t correlate inversely with corsi (unlike zonestart) because it’s not an independent variable. QoC does matter, a lot, you just have to look at it (and various other factors) in context.

My whole thing is what defines quality? Like what I mean is, if you’re looking at a team like Vancouver, which centre would be defined as hardest to play against? That’s the part I can’t wrap my head around.

Strictly speaking, corsi rel QoC measures “quality” in terms of who sees a positive ratio of shot attempts while on ice as compared to how the rest of the team does when he’s off the ice. If your opponents have high corsi rel figures, you are typically facing tough competition.

There are individual exceptions. Some guys will have a high corsi rel because they’re sheltered. But when factoring QoC your averaging everyone the guy plays against, so those outliers tend to balance out.

As to Vancouver, I’m guessing Sedins would have the highest corsi rel because they face such soft minutes. Malhotra wouldn’t look very good. But the Sedins are probably harder to play against than Malhotra overall, because with Manny you really don’t have to worry about defence much.

I suspect Kesler’s the hardest VCR C to play against and I’m betting it wouldn’t be reflected in corsi rel but as I said that’s the kind of outlier from individual team circumstances that gets evened out over an entire QoC calculation.

Its hard to articulate my question/point online. What I have an issue is that each player has different qualities. So a player like Maholtra his role is to be a shutdown guy and take the tough assignments where has the Sedins are a puck possession offense first line. So say the MGK line for example, would most likely see Maholtra more than Sedins but that may bring down their QoC.
Im not sure this makes any sense, but it does in my head!

Makes sense Sedins faced tougher comp—most teams like to play power v. power. Impressive Kesler had a higher corsi rel though given that the Sedins had such amazingly cushy zonestarts.

"[Phil Kessel]'s as streaky as a flipped coin" - Shift

by The '67 Sound on Jul 8, 2011 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

From what I know of Vancouver, Vigneault would try and get the following matchups:

Sedins were getting forward zone starts (something ridiculous like 70%Ozone start) and toughest competition (i.e. matching against the Thornton line vs San Jose)

Malhotra was getting defensive zone starts (once again, something ridiculous like a 70%Dzone start), but his line was not what you would call a checking line (i.e. he wasn’t used like Dave Bolland was vs the Sedins)

IIRC Kesler was a bit of a rover. He was lined up against the other teams sheltered scoring line (ie Horton-Krejci-Lucic, Clowe-Cotoure-Heatley). Kesler also got PP time with the Sedins.

by samspade on Jul 8, 2011 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t watch Vancouver during the regular season, but in the playoffs it seemed like Vigneault primarily matched up Kesler against the other team’s top line, rather than the Sedins.

I'm on Twitter too! - draglikepull

by Draglikepull on Jul 8, 2011 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Also remember it plays out totally differently road v. home. I think AV focuses more on zonestarts than line matching per se. I.e. he doesn’t care if you have your top line out, he’ll put the Sedins out if it’s an OZone F/O.

"[Phil Kessel]'s as streaky as a flipped coin" - Shift

by The '67 Sound on Jul 8, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

That was because Malhotra was hurt until the final.

If Sedins, Kesler and Manny are all in the lineup and healthy the Canucks run it something like what I described.

Also, 67sound makes a good point about home/road, and how the line matching and zone starts should not be confused as being the same thing. I tried to state that above (because Vigneault takes both into account), but he made it clearer.

Sure, we might get more balance with Jesus and Lebda paired, but even if we came away at -2, it’d make for a pretty sucky game – what with Jesus all the time worrying what numbnut was gonna do.

A lot more fun to see Jesus going end-to-end, Luke taking care of business at home, even if it meant dying a little inside, every time Leba and XLB hit the dancefloor.

XLB probably would try to hit the dancefloor.

Could Jesus raise Lebda’s game from the dead? Probably not, just too much cross to bear.

Either you have an enviable memory, or a pitiable life, to know nothing of regret.

Thescore.com article on the Isles and the cap floor. If we managed to trade Komi to them for anything at all I would actually poop my pants.

by daoust on Jul 8, 2011 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

seriously, we should trade him for future considerations, or a 2017 7th rounder. anything.

Congratulations Tomas!

by daoust on Jul 8, 2011 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The only way Komi moves before next year is if we take back bad salary in return. In other words, you couldn’t get him for a 2072 7th rounder. He has negative value so you need to basically pay someone to take him.

Ross was a bit of a forgotten man here, but he’s gotten considerably bigger in the interim and looks much more like a pro player. He said he’s up to 182 pounds and hopes to get to 190 this summer,

In Colborne’s first NHL game he recorded his first ever point by assisting on Phil Kessel’s 32 goal of the season. In Gretzky’s first NHL game he recorded his first ever point by assisting on a goal by Kevin Lowe.
