Game - Toronto Maple Leafs vs Calgary Flames
Fighters - Tie Domi, Sandy McCarthy
More Domi/McCarthy fight talk after the jump.
Lets get this out of the way quick
Could you imagine in this day and age being stuck watching a Toronto Maple Leafs game with John Garret doing commentary?
I can just imagine the tears running down his face when the Bruins won the Cup in game 7 in Vancouver, brings a smile to my face.
The fight
Tie Domi uses his spin cycle and they both swing for the fences at the same time. McCarthy lands one on Domi that sends his helmet flying and at the same time Domi cracks McCarthy with a left and another one right after.
Domi then grabs the linesman and pulls him between them which is surprising because McCarthy had just thrown two of the slowest "arm" punches I have ever seen.
The Maple Leafs went on to lose this game 4-3 in Overtime.
Domi/McCarthy
During the Maple Leafs first round series against the Flyers in 1999, Sandy McCarthy told reporters that Tie Domi made racial remarks towards him. Domi denied those allegations and said that McCarthy spit on him.
After an NHL investigation they found zero evidence that Domi said anything racist towards McCarthy.
Domi would later go on to say he had zero respect for McCarthy and that he would never, ever fight him.
The next season during a Saturday night, Hockey Night in Canada game all hell would break loose on the ice and Domi found himself being challenged by Craig Berube and Sandy McCarthy.
As you can see Domi kept true to his word.
The Maple Leafs went on to win the game 6-4.
This game was also the second game of a back to back. The Flyers won the previous game at home 4-2 and Domi fought Berube.
Two new fights next Monday and Tuesday and later this week I will do another post on a Classic Maple Leafs moment other then a fight.
Sad note
It's unfortunate and sad that the NHL community has lost two fighters and well like people in Derek Boogaard and Rick Rypien this summer.
RIP to both.
