Hallelujah! Luke Schenn Signs
Late breaking news as Bob McKenzie tweeted that Luke Schenn has signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and will be at camp later this morning:
Nothing official in way of Schenn numbers but hearing it's a 5 year deal in the $3.5M range, give or take $100K. Exact details in the a.m.
We'll update full details as they come in. A cap hit between $3.4M and $3.6M [Update: It's $3.6M] puts Schenn among the following company: Rob Scuderi, Johnny Oduya, Kris Letang, Ryan Suter, Roman Hamrlik, Nick Schultz, Willie Mitchell, Cory Sarich, Brent Burns, Matt Carle, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and Viktor Hedman. As Chemmy noted, this deal actually covers one of Schenn's UFA years as he would have been eligible to be an unrestricted free agent after the fourth year of his deal (seven accrued years of service).
While we wait for confirmation on those figures, here are a couple of recent posts about the Leafs' younger cornerstone defender:
- Chemmy's post looked at some comparables and came up with a sub-$3M per year figure
- Steve Burtch compared Luke Schenn's defensive play to the play of captain Dion Phaneuf

This buys UFA years. Good price.

Would have preferred a number a little lower, but honestly, in 2 or 3 years this could be a great value, and this buys us one of his UFA years which is awesome too.
Couldn’t be happier.
Yeah
It’s not as low as we would have hoped but it does buy a year of his UFA status and hopefully he grows into it.
Solid deal.

Sadly most of the fetuses will have punched their way out of the womb long before the pregnancy test can be administered, meaning those unlucky ladies will be out the $10.

You open the box, and it’s just a strip of cardboard that says:
1-Watched the Leafs play this year (Y/N)
2-Looked closely at Schenn (Y/N)
3-Have a uterus (Y/N)
Scoring: If you answered Yes to question 2, you should see a doctor.

Sad – I wanted him to get traded to the Sabres for peanuts.
Am I a bad person?
Original member of the Mike Weber bandwagon!
To make up for lost time, the Sabres signed six seasons worth of front-loaded cap skirting contracts in one week.
Yes.

Very reasonable
Awesome to hear about this deal. Obviously its been noted that it’s a bit high but I’m glad to buy a year of UFA for a bit more of a cap hit. Doughty should be taking notes on reaching a reasonable agreement, that kid is nuts if he is in fact turning down 6.8+ million $/year…
And the Masters of the Universe...
Well, I'm satisfied.
It’s not fantastic, but it’s still reasonable.

That year of UFA is actually worth quite a lot
Especially if the salary cap stops growing as fast (business is littered with the corpses of people who extrapolated short term trends out forever – not saying that it won’t keep growing, but you’d be brave to count on it).
In 1969 disco was up 600%. If this trend continues…eeehhhhh!

meh…. I knew it was coming; never really a doubt. The only thing I feel relief over is the amount Burke could have potentially dished out. I was hoping it wouldn’t be over 3.2, but as long as it stayed under 3.8, I couldn’t really complain.
DISCLAIMER I came late to the party, so I didn’t see the original comments. Nor am I a moderator, so I don’t have visibility into the “moderation cue”. On the topic of Chemmy post yesterday, comparing Schenn to other “like” defensemen, a poster “Chris” was disagreeing. Now, forgive me if I missed it, but it seems more and more that if anyone disagrees with the popular opinion of the blog, they are chastized, ridiculed, and then banned. You run the danger here of becoming a Stalin or Adolf of hockey blogging. However, if in fact, he was using inappropriate language, then that’s different. But, even at that point, I see vulgarities strewn throughout this blog on a daily basis w/o any consequences.

There are some things that have been so hashed out to death around here, like say how worthless plus/minus is, that when someone new comes in and talks it up the regulars just react dismissively by instinct. It’s nothing personal. Unless it is. You can never tell with these people

It’s not new and it’s not unique to this site. Generally when someone comes in and is more interested in being an asshole than raising a differing opinion then they are met with the exact same kind of response. Then, rather than defend his original arguments that were picked apart he started calling people “shit-flinging monkeys” (the moderated comments).
An asshole like that does nothing but lower the tenor of discussion. While we don’t always do a perfect job of moderating every comment on the site when someone’s already being a pain it’s easier to deal with it by banning them. They are always free to discuss it with us but of the dozens of people we’ve had to ban only one has ever made a case to show that it was legitimately a case of misunderstanding rather than them actually being an asshole.

You can definitely disagree with popular opinion. It’s all about if you’re an asshole about it or not. Think you’re right? Prove it, back it up, use evidence, logic, some semblence of rational thought and don’t just attack people like a troll.
I might have been one of the very few who was hoping we’d go all out to sign Brad Richards as a UFA July 1, despite knowing the downsides of age, cap hit, etc.
While I might have been chirped, I was hardly chastized, ridiculed, then banned.

exactly, nothing bugs me more than an argument based off of nothing but opinion without a methodology to back it up. Also people get waaaay too touchy when you question their opinion, especially many first timers and newbies who automatically go on the defensive and claim they are being abused by an echo chamber, failing to realize that most of the time the reason there is consensus is because of previous discussion on the topic.

I’m kind of amused by Steve’s article yesterday which launched yet another stats-based slap fight over what Schenn was worth, and now here this morning he signs for exactly what most of us thought he would six months ago; a discounted version of Marc Staal’s contract.

Depends how you value the UFA year. If you peg it at $5 million (probably about what a top shut-down defender will make in a few years) then the RFA years are valued at $3.25 million, significantly below Staal’s salary.

Well how many years of Staal’s contract were RFA vs UFA. You can’t do it to one player and not the other.

Kind of expected dollar amount.
Probably a little high, but for 5 years I’ll take it. I’m in.
Glad we don’t have to worr y about Schenn for 5 years

My thoughts exactly
I’m not dancing around my living room, but I’m still pleased. Plus getting rid of a UFA year is great. I’m satisfied and happy that we won’t have to think about it anymore.
Now we just worry about PLAYOFFS!!!1
