The Good Points article sums up Toronto/Montreal very well. Toronto being in the West for the longest time help put a damper on the rivalry.

it would have been awesome to have the Leafs/Habs in the ECF in 2002 instead of Leafs/Hurricanes.

(sidenote: Gilmour in a habs jersey playing the Leafs in the ECF? Would have been a happy/sad moment if the Leafs had win the series)

but the Leafs are reaching the same level the Habs are at so hopefully they can both be playoff teams this season.

Lombardi’s return to the lineup would be welcome news for the Leafs, as it was entirely uncertain when he would be able to play when the deal was made. A defensively savvy former 50-point man, he would be a considerable boost to the team’s forward depth, especially in the third-line left winger role Leafs coach Ron Wilson has him tentatively pencilled in for.

Yeah, i think people will warm to him once they see him a bit more. We saw him some last season, but like any player we’ve traded for that arrived half-way through the season, they have to “prove” themselves again the following season. Plus his recent history of injuries has reduced his stats, since his GP are down. Not saying the doubt is fully justified, but just point out why I think its the case.

by Goosemonster on Sep 23, 2011 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

people seem to think he’s some sort of perimeter player and has zero net pressence which is simply not the case.

by Nigel Cadbury on Sep 23, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

My ‘problem’ with Lupul has nothing to do with his offense. The issue is, that he and Kessel on one line means two very bad defensive players on the wing with only a mediocre defensive center. That’s what worries me.

http://bluechipprospects.blogspot.com

by Curt S on Sep 23, 2011 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But is the difference between Armstrong and Lupul’s defence equivalent to the difference between their offence? Do you think Armstrong would prevent 10-20 goals on his own to justify the drop in offence?

I see where you are coming from but I just don’t think Lupul is so terrible defensively. Ignoring this year (where his first 20 games or so back from a year+ of injury (and 30 lb of muscle loss)) he always seems to be middle of hte pack in Corsi Rel, and his Corsi Rel QualComp has also been middle of the pack (it was lower in Anaheim 2 years ago, and higher last year). I think he’ll be fine.

I personally see Kadri on the Leafs regardless of Lombardi’s status. Bozak, Kadri, Army and Lombardi will be like 3rd/4th liners where the lines are never exactly set and then when someone is injured they are there and ready.

Basically it will look like:

Lup – Con – Kes
Kul – Grab – Mac
Lom/Kad/Boz/Arm
One of above – Boyce – Brown
Rosehill/Orr

I could’ve predicted that response. Orr was injured for a long time last year and the team played better without him, is it crazy to think there’s a slight possibility that might factor into the coaching staff’s decision of whether or not to play him?

For the 80th time, I think he will most likely play if healthy, but it’s not a foregone conclusion. I’m not being defiant or ignoring the truth, so I don’t need someone else to say “if he’s healthy, he will play” again, I know that.

And they say Philadelphia Fans are the Worse ?

Have you heard of the Racial Incident in Detroit last night ? Wayne Simmonds of the FLYERS scores the Tying goal setting the Red Wings and FLYERS to go into Overtime (Detroit won 4-3) and a fan threw a Banana peel on the ice. Its not nice to be racists

Here is the article and video of the event.

http://deadspin.com/5843152/fan-throws-a-banana-peel-at-black-player-in-tonights-flyersred-wings-game

[A] fan in the John Labatt Centre threw a banana peel at Simmonds as he skated in on a shootout attempt during a 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

“I caught it from the side of my eye,” Simmonds said. “It was a banana. Hopefully, that wasn’t directed towards me being black. Because if it was, that’s just somebody being ignorant.”

The banana peel, thrown from the upper deck, landed directly in Simmonds path toward Red Wings goalie Jordan Pearce during the shootout.

The incident isn’t caught in that video from the shoot-out. Simmonds scored. The fan wasn’t caught. And his Flyers teammates were talking about it after the game.

“I would have went and kicked that fan’s ass myself,” one teammate said, asking to remain nameless. “That’s just not right.”

The following is a statement from Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds:

"It was unfortunate that this incident happened but I am above this sort of stuff. This is something that is out of my control. Moving forward, this incident is something I will no longer comment on so I can just focus on playing hockey for the Philadelphia Flyers."

The following is a statement from Comcast-Spectacor president and COO, Peter Luukko:

“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to identify the individual. We certainly don’t condone such a foolish act (like this) as a player could potentially be seriously injured. This is ninth time we have played here in London and the fans have always been wonderful to us. The Flyers consider this our ‘home away from home’ and that’s because this city, the fans and this spectacular arena have been so supportive of the Philadelphia Flyers.”

The following is a statement from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman:

“We have millions of great fans who show tremendous respect for our players and for the game. The obviously stupid and ignorant action by one individual is in no way representative of our fans or the people of London, Ontario.”

In fact .. If anyone would try to hurt or discriminate or bash a homosexual hockey Player I would be against that and support that hockey player.

I don’t approve of that lifestyle as a Born Again Christian.. But I would never discriminate. I would only offer if they were willing to listen on thier own free will the Christian view on that lifestyle.

I never said I dont believe in Equal Rights. Your VIEW of that states that. Any Born Again Christian does not feel that their should be Same Sex Marriages. Thats not to say were not for Equal Rights, were merely saying it goes against what we believe.

Not that I am trying to bring this up but rather trying to make the correction. Please do not state I am “Not for Equal Rights” as I am for equal rights.

Forgive my ignorance here

But from my understanding Born Again Christianity isn’t a homogenous group with one set of beliefs. I thought a “Born Again Christian” is a christian (of ANY Christian sect) who feels they have undergone a spiritual rebirth to be closer to Jesus. Thus as they can be from any Christian sect they have different views…

But I could be way off here.

To refuse homosexual couples the rights that come with being married is to be opposed to equal rights. You simply cannot say that you are opposed to gay marriage, yet pro-equal rights in all situations. They are conflicting views.

Furthermore, you can be a born again Christian and believe in equal rights – including gay marriage.

Errrrrrrr Theo Epstein is a pretty big “Moneyball” guy. The A’s tried for years to pry Kevin Youkilis out of the Red Sox. Billy Beane referred to Youk as “The Greek God of Walks”.

The A’s got pretty close, but that approach was instrumental in the construction of the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox.

Yeah they spend a lot of money, but they had to compete with the Yankees.

I will give the Red Sox and the Yankees credit for one thing: they spend a lot, but by and large they spend it well.

They also draft surprisingly well, but mostly so they have the prospects on hand to trade away. So that’s neither here nor there.

I don’t really want to get into a debate about this but I am going to say this anyways.

In baseball it is significantly easier to “draft well” when you have the budget to afford big signing bonuses.

by Huey2k2 on Sep 23, 2011 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

and the players say they won’t play for certain teams so the smaller market teams have to skip over them or it’s a wasted pick.

by Nigel Cadbury on Sep 23, 2011 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Development is much more important and takes far longer as well. Tampa has done an excellent job drafting and developing players and they are one of the smaller markets. If they could spent half of what Boston/ New York spends they would need their own league.

They were the only team to perform beyond the expectations of their payroll. Once teams with bigger payrolls figured out how they were doing it, they went back to crushing the A’s. It doesn’t change the revolution in perspective that the book tracks.

To be fair...

Baseball is probably the only sport you could get away with doing this in.

Baseball is far more stat driven than pretty much any other sport. You could pretty much build a championship team just by looking at things like WAR, and that’s pretty much exactly what he did in the early 2000’s. They were very very competitive and had a tiny payroll.

I am not suggesting that it is the best way to do it, but it’s not as horrible as it seems.

by Huey2k2 on Sep 23, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed. which is kind of my point when i get so incredulous about things people say around here using only advanced stats to back it up. hockey doesn’t always lend itself well to statistics to assess how a player is performing. especially because the stats for each player are different (offensive vs defensive), whereas the stats for all batters in baseball are the same.

Move along. Nothing to see here...

The idea is that they’re better than regular stats, not that they’re all-enlightening. Of course, consider that Plus/Minus is a “Regular stat” so the bar isn’t very high.

And a lot of the time advanced stats are just about giving us a way to quantify things we already watch for and talk about, like how often a player plays against difficult opposition or whether they got good chances. Like, ultimately all that “scoring chance” data does is have someone watching the game take out all the bad shots and focus on the good ones.

But it is supposed to do more than that. If you watch a game to see who plays the toughest players without actually tracking it you often get a biased view. The idea is to present what the ACTUAL situation is. Does it always work? Hell no. But it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep trying to make it better.

I just finished reading the book. And Beane had a major temper issue, and it was more that he got so riled up about the games that he couldn’t watch them. He ended up doing some pretty irrational things as a result of losing. He hated it. He traded Jeremy Giambi in a fit of rage. He would also drive around the parking lot with a little pager that updated him on the score. He did strive for objectivity though. Also players did things in the games that pissed him off so he didn’t want to watch either.

I look myself in the mirror and live in this skin and I ask GOD for guidance and to be treated the way I treat others.

so yeah.. it is a phonetic spelling.. Its a joke.. Most Bush leagues or fake fantasy teams have wacky names.
