Chris Neil Has Never Been Suspended
I'll spare you all from pointing out that dressing Jay Rosehill in no way prevented Chris Neil from cheapshotting one of our best players and instead will point out that if he's not suspended for their first matchup I hope Colton Orr caves his face in.
But the title's true. Somehow this cheapshot goon has escaped punishment throughout his entire career.
James Reimer looked shaky to start but it's pretty hard for anyone to stop cross crease tap ins or save pucks when someone's sitting on them and their own players force it in the net. Reimer settled down nicely and gave the Leafs the chance to win tonight. He finished at 32/35 for a .914 tonight.
Nikolai Kulemin's goal came from both him and Mikhail Grabovski crashing the net hard. Who says europeans aren't willing to go to the dirty areas?
In fact the entire MGK line got on the scoresheet tonight, Grabovski had a goal and two assists, Kulemin had a goal and Clarke MacArthur added an assist and this:
Wait he scored over Lehner's glove! I bet we won't get years of "Robin Lehner has a bad glove hand" articles like we get with Reimer.
Finally, Cody Franson scored a goal off of Darryl Boyce and John-Michael Liles scored as well, it's nice to see the defense joining the production. The Leafs need to work on their PK but they came back from 2-0 to win 5-3, I'll take it.

There were some pretty bad defensive lapses, there.
It’s a lot less likely that the Leafs would have come back against a team dressing an equivalent number of regulars. The Boyce/Crabb/Rosehill line (or was Dupuis in there somewhere?) was on for two goals against that just plain should have been covered.
Of course, they’re probably getting extra TOI because it’s the preseason, and Wilson is trying to figure who to keep.

I was at the game tonight….it was great! Except for a bunch of Sens fans shouting anti-Muslim slurs throughout the 3rd period, I had a good time. They were pretty drunk, but I turned to them and told them there was no place for prejudice in the game. They kept it up anyways. I hope they’re ashamed of themselves. They were turds.
On the bright side, they kept dissing Mikhail Grabovski, and you never piss off a Belorussian pineapple killer. He lit the lamp to prove that Sens fans are turds after all.
Same. Most of the Sens fans sitting around me were pretty cool though, even when I started yelling at everything. Mostly they were just mad at their own team.
Surprisingly, nobody in my section seemed to notice that the Neil hit on Grabbo was dirty. Or maybe not that surprising after all.

I mean, sometimes you see someone at the last second, and just brace for the hit. I don’t think this was anything but incidental, despite the fact that this is Neil. Even if Neil saw him coming, Grabbo needs to watch the eff out.

Grabbo WOULD have run right into him but on a slow-motion replay you can see Neil lean into Grabovski.

There was another replay during the game...
and you could see Neil line the hit up way earlier.
He drifted down into Grabbo’s path and slows down just a touch to make sure he hits him. I think the subtle drop of the shoulder to deliver the hit is most incriminating.
Sneaky as hell. Definitely on purpose IMO.
Hopefully Sheriff Shanny sees it the same way.
No problems with the Sens fans sitting near me, though I was in a predominantly Leaf section. Some pretty crazy homophobia coming from Leafs fans on the bus back to Ottawa after the game, though.

I think people need to know their limits with alcohol a lot better. It’s great to drink before and during the game but don’t do it so much you act like a fool. Then again, as I said to my wife, if you’re shouting anti-Muslim (or in your case anti-gay) slurs when you are drunk, you’re definitely prejudiced when you’re sober.
I wanted to watch the game so I only called out these guys once, but no one else did and it was pretty shameful. It wasn’t that they were saying them, they were really screaming them. You could hear it many, many rows down.

the thing i love about the MacArthur goal
is when he gives it to Grabbo I think he’s just trying to make the smart play and eat time. rather than shoot it and have it go back the other way, he gives it deep to Grabbo. if Grabbo eats it, great. But instead they get a better scoring chance instead of an odd-man rush the other way.

Not sure how well the cameras followed this on TV, but at the game Grabbo looked disoriented and dazed after the hit, including when he was briefly on the bench before going to the locker room to get checked out. He also apparently said he can’t remember the hit. So far the Leafs are claiming there’s no concussion, but they also said that the last time Grabbo got hit in the head, and it later came out that he was actually concussed. I seriously hope they’re not covering up another concussion here. I’m obviously in no place to diagnose him, but from what I saw/heard, I’m definitely concerned.

His return wasn’t authorized, however, until he was examined for a concussion and concussion-like symptoms in the Leaf dressing room, part of the league’s new, mandatory protocol for players who take hits to the head.
"No, not at all, I’m fine," Grabovski said when asked if he’d suffered a concussion. "I remember the accident. I didn’t see him (Neil), just a hard hit. I forgot my stick on the ice. But NHL rules now, you go into the room and they asked me about my head, but everything was fine."

I mean, we can be talking best pure scorer, or playmaker, or offensive/defensive defenceman, or all around player. I think Grabbo would be our best all around player just because his defensive zone play is also quite good. Offensively, it’s hard to argue against Kessel, scoring 30+ goals in 3 straight seasons. Petty petty revenge. I’m a big fan of it. Although if Shannahan keeps up his excellent distribution of justice Revenge fights won’t be necessary all the time.

I’m worried if Shannahan keeps up his excellent distribution of justice he won’t have time to eat or sleep.
Also, I wonder if he’ll look as composed in his 300th suspension video in October.

apparently some GMs are not happy with the tougher justice. I’d suggest that these GMs get better players and less cheapshot artists/goons.
I’d agree. Don’t excuse your players engaging in illegal hits and dirty plays. It’s bot part of the game, it hasn’t been for a long, long time. It’s just that now we’re enforcing it more.

Any time they play the Sens, Isles and maybe Flyers I’d like to see Orr in there but only in those games.

I find your lax attitude toward counterfeit merchandise appalling.

Hey!
I’m European and I just love going to the dirty areas.
Hurr hurr hurr.
No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise.
Chris Neil
I’m a reformed Leafs fan, living in Ottawa and now cheering for the Sens. I grew up cheering for the Leafs, even during the Ballard’s Buffoons years.
I lost my affection for the Leafs, ironically, because they became the kind of team you all apparently don’t like, when you describe Chris Neil. Without Wendel and without Killer, the Leafs became cheap, after-the-whistle face washers. Tie Domi’s elbow to Neidermayer, Tucker’s entire tenure and even Mats’ whole attitude just started to turn me off. Every whistle, you would think the world was coming to an end, instead, it was the team itself.
The Leafs beat us in the playoffs way more times than I want to admit. Roberts was a stud and the only guy who had the Gilmour/Clark class. I wish he had played for us. But the rest of the team for the most part was just really hard to take.
Chris Neil, like anyone who has to augment his game with a bit of physicality to stick in the bigs, has had his moments. I didn’t like the Drury hit. But watch that guy in the slot. I defy you to name another player who takes the abuse he takes and who gets fewer penalty calls in his favour or who does less to complain about his treatment there. To brand him gutless, or a pussy is macho posturing.
I’ve never seen Neil decline an invitation to dance unless it was one of those moments where it would hurt the team. He frequently fights above his weight class. If and when the time comes, he won’t back down. But that’s not because I need him to be that guy to feed my ego, that’s just what I have observed of the guy over his career.
Did he intend to hit Grabovski or did he brace for impact? I honestly can’t tell. I hope it was accidental, and if he ever crosses the line to the point there is no doubt about his responsibility, I hope they suspend him, just liek I hope they suspend anyone else who is either deliberate or careless in their behaviour. There needs to be some room for absolute accident, but I like the way they have been treating headshots like high sticks – holding them to account for careless as well as intentional transgressions.
Calling for faces to be caved in or snipers – that’s basically what I walked away from.
