Brian Burke Interview on the Fan590
I'm surprised Burke didn't strangle them in the first 15 seconds because Cox and McCown are laying on the "asshole" thick and heavy. Anywho, give it a listen to a) further the legend of Brian Burke, b) get some good sound bites of the legend that is Brian Burke.

First of all,as it is, Bob and BB don’t get along. But why Bob felt the need to have douche Cox on air with him is beyond me. Why set the interview up like this?
What drives me nuts is all the banter before and after Brian was on air. Both these idiots spout crap that they never, ever would dare say to Burke himself. They did it last week with Donald Fehr, their both gutless cowards.

If I could get a kid that I really believe could be special, I always do that, unless I thought we were going to have a parade. […] I do think there’s room for “age group asset” trades. For example, if you trade a 22 year old and get back a 22 year old for a different position […] that’s a possibility.

The difference is in the money, though. JVR’s about to start a first liner’s contract.

The difference isn’t that large per year. 625 000. JVR’s is one year longer though. Do you consider that locked in for longer or stuck in contract for longer (similar to the discussion we were having earlier).

JVR’s being on a team with Giroux and 62% ozone start concerns me. It also confuses me that he’s only averaging 3rd line ice time as a winger on PHI. I dunno – it could work out, but I think the Leafs are taking on more risk in that deal, and I’d like to be compensated for it in a trade.

Did not realize he had 62% ozone start. Philly also has good wingers ahead of him who are basically all older (except for Voracek who is same draft year IIRC). I am not concerned about that.

So Philly’s plan to win a cup is to trade three of their four top scorers for futures, tie up 51 million over 9 years in a crazy person, and hide Pronger on LTIR until they succeed in turning him into RoboCop.

This is the draft class for JVR’s year: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl2007e.html
I wouldn’t trade Schenn straight up for anyone of those forwards save for Patrick Kane……….I don’t think JVR becomes more than a second line winger and honestly if I were to trade Schenn as a centerpiece in any package, a young first line talent (30 goal, 60-70 point) has to be coming back

Not to sound the Birky Alarm, but Schenn hasn’t really been a driving force for the Leafs’ defense.
I wonder if there’s enough risk in the JVR contract that – with more than just Schenn going out, of course – Carle could come back the other way. Expiring UFA contract. Carle-Phaneuf, Gunnarsson-Franson, Gardiner-Komisarek. Still has its weak points, but wouldn’t be bad.

We do have a void of size up front and right now Crabb is the LW on Grabovski’s line. We’d also be dealing from a position of strength in the organization, and we’d be dealing the guy who is mostly our #6 defender right now.

My point is that it would be just as shortsighted to move Schenn now as it would have been 2 years ago. Burke was once offered a top-3 pick for Schenn, if what he says is true. No way he now moves Schenn for a guy like JVR. At least I’d hope not.

Except that JVR is not playing at the level you’d expect out of a #2 overall. Would you trade a 2nd overall for JVR? People didn’t want to trade that for Kessel.

Ok, I looked more closely at past #2 picks, and you could argue he’s doing fine. Still, I don’t think it makes sense to trade Schenn for a relative unknown now any more than it did his rookie season, given that we haven’t seen what he’s capable of. Especially given the comparables people have mentioned.

by JaredFromLondon on Jan 11, 2012 9:08 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed if this was the only deal coming, but I think Burke’s been building up forward depth and is going to swing one or more out of town for an older defenceman. Frankly, we’ve got 4 lines of vets plus these kids like Kadri and Colborne and Frattin chomping at the bit.
I think the whole “No more enforcers, League – and Leafs – becoming fleet of foot” storyline reduced Schenn’s perceived upside. I’d love it if he can find a way to become that shutdown guy, and do it on the Leafs, but damned if I can see the path forward for him on this kind of team.
Maybe we could dump Wilson first, go back to a slower-moving, tie-em-up kindof team?

And the third seems unlikely, since Burke has said he’s not interested in just making the playoffs, but that he wants to build a cup winner, and will improve the team whenever he can. So if Liles is gone this off-season, I find it hard to imagine that Burke won’t at least try to move him now.
