Who are you?

I don't spend quite as much time on PPP as I used to. Unfortunately, work life has been quite hectic of late and my down time is at a minimum. Still, I try to keep up with the stories surrounding my favourite team, and this site remains the very best place (online or otherwise) to do so. Seems there are a lot of new faces (usernames) around these days. Thought it might be a good time for everyone to get to know eachother a little bit better. Sorta like the ol' A/S/L question from the internet chatrooms of yester-year.

I think, collectively, this site has a very interesting readership. The bits and pieces that are occasionally revealed in the comment sections and/or "Chatty Cathys" lead me to believe that the Barilkosphere undoubtedly contains fascinating people with fascinating stories. Might be nice to share a little about ourselves and perhaps see beyond the usernames and signature lines. Here are a couple items to get things started. Feel free to add to the list if you determine it is lacking.

I too only really got into hockey later in life, for me it was in my 3 year of university when I did a co-op term, there was nothing much to do when I got off work and my friends weren’t around so I started watching hockey, loyally. That would have been the first year after the lockout. I remember the Leafs playing the Sharks in the playoffs many years ago, but I didn’t grasp the enormity of it. I have no knowledge of Gretzky’s high stick except reading about it on downgoesbrown for the first time. But I have always been and always will be a Leafs fan.

Who are you?
in a shocking twist, my name actually turns out to be… William

Where are you?
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan or, as the CBC calls it, “Jets Country”

What do you do?
I’ve been workin’ in the railroad, all the live long day…

Do you blog about the Leafs? If yes, where?
I’ll occaisionally get drunk and throw some random rant up on here, but that’s about it

Favourite non-Leafs website?
not really my favourite, but might as well do some shameless self-promoting for Will Gets Drunk And Reviews Terrible Movies

I was on an episode of the CBC show Smart Ask which, since literally no one knows/remembers what that was, it was a trivia game show for teams of three high school students. The best part of that was that they flew us to Toronto and I got to go to a Leafs game (they ended up winning, too)

I actually think I do remember that show.

How did your team do on the show?

by somny on Jan 18, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

we lost in the first game. It wasn’t as bad as the 600 – 320 score would lead you to believe (questions were worth 20, 50, or 100 points and they got two of their 100 point questions while we didn’t get any), but it was still pretty bad. I DID carry my team (230 of the 320 points), so that’s something at least.
To this day I still think the questions were a bit fixed (one of the other teams 100 point questions was “Peter Parker wouldn’t have this fear, what is the fear of spiders called?” whereas one of ours was “what is the name of the author whose book coinedthe term Generation X?”).

Coupland is one of my top 3 favourite authors!

by somny on Jan 20, 2012 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

yeah but I was 17 and hadn’t read any of that (neither had the other team apparently since, if you didn’t answer your 100 point question it went to the other team for 50 points and they didn’t get it either).
Another funny thing about that episode I remember now is you can see me visibly cursing myself for not ringing in on one of the toss up questions that eventually timed out. Between that and the “sweet” moustache I had at the time (long story), that whole trip is full of laughs I haven’t thought of in years

I remember that horribly confusing movie I wasn’t able to explain because it completely had me baffled. Actually, my bro reminded me what it was because he was sick of my trying to explain the movie. It’s “Immortal” from 2004. Apparently it’s based on a comic and isn’t at all confusing. (Psht, ya, right!)

by DiaDud on Jan 20, 2012 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll have to remember that. Things have been so crazy with work lately I haven’t had the time to get good and drunk while watching a terrible movie. I’m beginning to think it’s some sort of complicated plan on the part of my employers to get me to quit drinking all together by just not giving me any time to do it in

by SlickWill on Jan 23, 2012 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

This one will need your concentration. It is just crazy. I thought I had figured it out about 20 times. But no, I did not. It made me feel completely stupid.

My mood probably depends on the results of last Leafs game. I may have a problem.

My Wife is the love of my life and we got married on May 07th 2011. My Sister and Father passed away on May 27 & November 06th 2011 & I am looking forward to 2012. I went on an all expense paid week long cruise to Barbados and the British Virgin Islands in April as a result of selling enough insurance and this year 2012 I am going to the Punta Canta Dominican Republic at the Hard Rock Cafe all expense paid in May as well for another week for selling enough insurance and that will be our 1 yr anniversary. I am a devout born again Christian and I read allot of personal development books. My Mother is French Canadian decent as my Great Grandfather came from France to New Brunswick then Maine USA. I have relatives in NB & Maine. I have an Ex Cheating Wife in Brantford Ontario that Cheated on me while I was in Iraq. I still have some friends in Ontario area as well.

So, your relatives in New Brunswick would be Acadians, right?

I shot a moose once, in upstate New York.

Acadians ? Dont Know what that is but.....

It was a French Guy who settled in New Brunswick around the late 1890’s – 1900’s then eventually migrated to Maine USA as a Potato Farmer and my Grandfather was a First generation American born.

So if thats what an Acadian is, Then yeah I guess.

oh and some of the other relatives never migrated from New Brunswick to Maine so half the family was in USA and half of the family was in CDN. So I have CDN relatives as well.

Who are you: MLS, real name Russel

Where are you: I live in Richmond Hill, just north of Toronto

What do you do: I’m in my first year of a networking/IT program at George Brown College

Do you blog about the Leafs: No, but I tweet about them, and comment here every once in a while :)

Something about me: Along with being a huge Leafs/sports fan, I’m also an absolutely huge nerd/tech head. I follow the tech industry as much as I follow the Leafs, and am a certified Apple lover.

And I forgot something else you guys might find cool! This past summer I met Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf, Jonas Gustavsson, Tyler Bozak, and Luca Caputi while working at Maple Downs Golf & Country Club. Dion sounds a lot smarter away from the media, and Phil is so goofy/awkward/shy it’s awesome. Phil was especially nice to us, he stayed 10 minutes after his friends left just to shoot the shit with us, it was great. They also all tip very well.

On a day I wasn’t working, those guys came back, along with Cody Franson, Colby Armstrong, and Tim Connolly. My co-workers all said that Colby was one of the biggest characters they’d ever seen. All super nice guys.

Where are you: Edinburgh

Who are you? Diane

Where are you? Cobourg

What do you do? Teacher (Currently teaching high school Visual Arts. It’s fun!)

Do you blog about the Leafs? If yes, where? No. Instead I talk about them on a daily basis to pretty much anyone who will listen.

Favourite non-Leafs website? These exist? I guess DownGoesBrown, who counts since he’s not allowed to write only about the Leafs anymore.

Tell us something about yourself that some might find fascinating: I lived and worked in South Korea for a year, and while I was there I even ventured into North Korea for a weekend. We had to stay in a fenced-in compound surrounded completely by gun-wielding NK soldiers (which was frightening), and I was even brave enough to purchase [over the legal limit of] alcohol and survived customs despite the risk of getting arrested and having to live out my days being an NK prisoner. I also once visited Dougie Gilmour’s parents’ at their house and sat on the couch he sleeps on when he’s there. (The kid in me thought that was SOOOOOOOOOOOO cool). And he called when we were there!! My brother got to talk to him. I did not. : ( I still hold a grudge over my bro. My story will now end.

You know me as stucky, but my real name is Jason.

As my sig says, I live in Ottawa (and it`s not as bad as I say in my sig… but shhhhh, it`ll be our little secret, k?)

I`m an accounting manager at a Ford dealership.

I don`t blog about the Leafs, it`s hard enough to keep up with the many great Leaf blogs as it is, let alone try and come up with interesting material myself.

I`m a sports nut so I spend a lot of time on TSN, Yahoo Sports and the like. Sometimes I`ll go to Wikipedia, click on an interesting link and see where the other related links take me.

Somewhat similar to SlickWill, I was on a high-school quiz show called Reach For The Top. The show put two teams of four against each other. The best experience was the team we had in my last year, our team eliminated our nemesis (the same school that knocked us out the previous 2 years) in the London/Western Ontario regional semi-finals, though unfortunately we lost in the regional finals; we still went on and completed in the provincials, placing in the top 15 in all of Ontario. I also used to play the baritone in high school (props for anyone who knows what that is), as well as the tuba and trombone at times.
