Leafs manhandled by Rangers
The game last night was ugly. The Rangers come out with the intent to punish the Leafs physically, which they did, and the Leafs had no response. I would guess that Brian Burke did not have a great night's sleep.
In other news, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun is suggesting that the top candidate for the Columbus Blue Jackets' soon-to-be open GM spot is none other than John Ferguson Jr. Enjoy your Sunday folks.

Leafs could fall out of the playoffs again if Washington and Pittsburgh both win tonight, and the probably should, based on some weak competition. I hope everybody has their finger on the PANIC! button again.

The good news is that Washington will soon pass Florida to take over lead of the SE Division, and I think we can finish the season with more points than the Panthers, who are currently 1 point ahead of us with 1 game at hand. We’re also going to be in tight with Ottawa and New Jersey for most of the rest of the season. And I don’t think they’re likely to catch up, but Winnipeg is still within striking distance of a playoff spot. That basically puts us in a 5-way competition for 3 playoff spots. Those odds aren’t bad, but it’s going to be a battle for the Leafs the rest of the way unless we can put together some sort of crazy 8-game winning streak or something.

Here is the East’s predictions by sportsclubstats
We hold 8th with Jersey basically tied. Florida, Pittsburgh and Washington are all within reach though.

Compared to teams vying for the bubble spots (FLA, NJ, Atlanta, Sens)
- The leafs are worse in puck possession by Fenwick Close Road and
- The leafs have been luckier of those teams by PDO
The leafs have been outshot and have benefited largely by luck compared to other teams.
Cool, I have never seen such a thorough and science based buzz kill.

Our goal differential is the same as Ottawa’s (even for both), but better than NJ (-4), Fla (-10), Atlantapeg (-15). Statistical based buzz creator ftw!

The Leafs are kind of indecipherable from a stats perspective right now. For example, while their Fenwick numbers aren’t great and their PDO indicates the likelihood of regression, other stats look pretty good. Their 5v5 goal differential is 9th in the league, Reimer is T-8th in terms of even strength SV%, etc. The team is kind of a mess of stats that don’t quite line up.
[Confirmation bias alert] I think it basically points to the Leafs being a bubble team – they’re quite good at some things, not so good at others, and making or not making the playoffs could hinge on which way a little bit of luck swings.

I had a dream last night
Burke traded Kessel and we started another rebuild again. I had to check TSN to make sure I was wrong.
phew
If I bled any more blue, you'd think I wasn't human.

I had a dream too
that the Leafs panicked, as the “window for winning with Kessel and Phaneuf was starting to close” and the team traded away its top prospects and draft picks to get guys who can help “right away”.
Who are these top prospects you speak of?

Not that last night was Gustavsson’s fault AT ALL, but I wonder if maybe Reimer is not actually 100% healthy. I guess we will see if he starts this week.

Josh Rimer @JoshRimerHockey
From what I’m told Gardiner might have a real short stay in minors as Leafs could be making a trade In next 24-48 hrs.
well, that escalated quickly
it must be that Gardiner for Getzlaf, Ryan and Perry trade no one was talking about.

So. If Dion and Komi and Liles are locks to stay (all for different reasons) what we have left are young defence = Gardiner 21, Schenn 22, Aulie 22, Franson 24 and Gunnar 25.
I’d prefer an older, steady, tough-as-nails shutdown defender to having all 5 of these relatively young players (plus who’s coming up, Blacker et al.)
And if Gardiner and maybe Gunnar are preferred these days, that means Schenn, Aulie and Franson? And seems to me the value of Aulie and Franson would be fairly low these days. i.e. They maybe haven’t shown enough yet.
So…. Schenn still out there? But Burke just said, in effect, he’s not being traded.
Who goes?
I shot a moose once, in upstate New York.
by not norm ullman on Jan 15, 2012 1:13 PM EST up reply actions
I would say that Dion, Liles and Gunnar are the only proven defensemen at this point, they are here to stay. And it appears that Burke has a hard on for Schenn. Anyone else is fair game for trades.
At least it's not Lebda.

As much as I hate to say it
I think Gunnarsson’s the one who would be most desirable to other teams right now.
.

by Nifty Mittens on Jan 15, 2012 1:30 PM EST up reply actions
Ironically, I think he’s the defenseman we need to hold onto the most. He would be vastly undervalued in a trade.
Come to think of it, I never hear Burke or Wilson talk about Gunnar, unsure if that’s a good or bad thing.
well, that escalated quickly
I dont think we have anyone who can replace him at this point.. He rarely takes penalties, he blocks a lot of shots and generally makes smart plays.
At least it's not Lebda.
by Nifty Mittens on Jan 15, 2012 2:16 PM EST up reply actions
yea, he’s likely the second most valuable D-man on the Leafs right now
Toronto Maple Leafs: All about the Lemon Grabs

I think the assumption of Komi and Lies are incorrect. I don’t see them as locks to stay. If Komi can show some return to form I think all those budget teams will be looking at him because his cap is will be $4.5M but you’ll only have top pay him $3.5M/yr with 2 years left. JML looks like the exact type of player most teams want for the push to the playoffs so unless we believe we need him more, I think he might be a trade candidate.
As for the rest its a crap shoot. I mean any one can go but as to who – interms of who can we do without rather than who would other teams want, mentality, Its really tough to say but if I were to bet, it might be either Schenn or Aulie.
"There's been four different Cup winners the last four years, and I got one of them (Anaheim) and it was a fighting team. We're playing it that way regardless." - B. Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM
In a TSN segment Dreger was saying Franson is getting close to untouchable for the Leafs. Since Komisarek went down the Leafs brass have been very impressed.
by Five Minutes For Fighting on Jan 15, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions
Based on his cap hit vs performance, I think management would be wise not to move Franson unless they were getting an extremely good return. Same with Gunnarsson.

Two thoughts on that:
1. At this time of season, people make predictions like that almost every day. Eventually one of them is going to be right by dumb luck, because we all know Burke is working the phones and likes to make trades in January.
2. Gardiner was sent to the minors because Burke wanted him to get some ice time (per his interview on Fan590 earlier this week). The Marlies don’t play today or tomorrow. Same with the Leafs. If Burke knows he’s likely to make a deal that would create a roster spot for Gardiner before either team plays again, why go to the trouble of filling out the paper work to send him to the Marlies?

I am confused on PDO
People kept saying our PDO was really bad so I looked into it. Hawerchuk’s weekly Fenwick power rankings, gives us a pretty high PDO of 1022 (that means we are likely to regress… hard). However when I calculated it from data found behind the night for 5×5 I got the following (Leafs 1006, 14th, so shouldn’t necessarily regress that much):

Looking through the comment section I think the reason the PDO numbers are different is because the Fenwick article is showing PDO numbers when close. What I don’t understand is why the Fenwick article’s PDO numbers average to 1000 and my calculated ones average to 1009.

Maybe BtN rounds differently? Theoretically, you should have a save percentage that’s 4 digits if you’re calculating PDO.
