Leafs top line hemmed in their own zone.
One thing about kessel and Lupul that drives me nuts, hell the leafs as a team, their ability at the blue line. They are never at the boards when the puck gets whipped their by the d-men. Thats one of the reasons why they have difficulties getting the puck out. If kessel or Lupul are at the boards there, they get that puck out

You mean the idea that using market inefficiencies to give a competitive advantage to a financially weaker team is a farce?
Or do you mean that Oakland’s methods per se are a farce (which is a bit unfair, considering that big market teams started adopting similar methods)?
I think what I mean is that the whole concept of moneyball is crap seeing as that so called fantastic Oakland team won absolutely fuck all. The key to their success was drafting and developing top of the rotation pitchers who peaked at the same time. This crap about having players with a high OBP etc only seems to work well when they are surrounded by a top dollar team. How well did the Blue Jays and Dodgers do after hiring Beanes disciples? And on top of that how well has Beane done himself recently? There are two proven ways to win in baseball, spend lots of money i.e Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies. Or draft and develop top notch starting pitching i.e Rays, San Fran. It just irritates me that the crappy team he built around phenomenal starting pitching somehow became the basis for a book

Also, just trying to “spend lots of money” doesn’t work unless you sign the right guys. That’s why the Yankees and Red Sox haven’t won all of the World Series’ in the past 10 years, and why the Cubs haven’t won anything in a century.
Plus, back-to-back 100 W seasons is nothing to sneeze at in baseball. It’s hard enough to make the playoffs let alone win 3 series heavily influenced (especially the opening round) by luck and chance. 4 teams make the playoffs from each league unlike 8 from each conference in the NBA and MLB. Though there is less influence of luck in the outcome of the MLB playoffs opposed to the NFL playoffs.

I get the feeling that you not only didn’t read my post, but that you don’t watch baseball at all. My point was that their great pitching, and not their average or below average position players, was what lead them to have success. I don’t really care to compare the NFL playoffs to baseball, because that only makes my point more obvious seeing as many teams turn to a 3 or 4 man rotation in the MLB playoffs. But whatever, seeing as the teams I just named have won something like 7 outta 10 world series, I would say I’m on the right track. No one who who follows this moneyball plan without a very high payroll seems to fail miserably. But you obviously liked the movie and think it just must be real so whatever

Have not seen the movie, nor have I read the book. I have seen clips of the movie, and can tell (and have been told) that they play up the attitudes of the scouts to better portray the differences in attitudes.
Not sure why you also think that the A’s were made up of nothing but cheap hitters and awesome pitchers. In the 2001 season, they had 3 players hit 30+ HR and drive in over 100 runs. The next year they had 2 players do that, plus Dye who went 20+ & 80+.
If Beane was so wrong about this stuff, why does everyone include OBP, SLG & OPS in their valuations of players?
They aren’t meant to be an all-encompassing valuation of a players worth, it’s just another tool to measure a player like his average, home runs and stolen bases.

Komisarek was -2 in a 3-0 loss. That’s bad
He was -1 in a 3-2 loss. That’s mediocre, but not terrible – he wasn’t responsible for the goal scored.
He was 0 in a 2-0 shut out. That’s awesome, we didn’t get scored on at all.
I don’t know what you want, when in years prior Komisarek was often a Liability. This year he’s far more responsible.
Defensive defensemen don’t light up the score sheet on a regular basis, so Komisarek hovering around even +/- is just fine.
Dude does not blow. Dude used to blow, but not this year.
Nothing flashy, stay at home defenseman, better D than the Leafs average.
He has been atrocious lately, last few games he has easily been the worst dman out there

It's time Ron Wilson gets fired.
The Leafs are 13-15-4 since Nov. 3rd and only six of their 22 wins on the season have come against playoff teams, and only one (Detroit) since Dec. 5th.
The Leafs have a 23rd best 14-8-1 record when scoring first, ahead of only ANA, TB, CAR, EDM, MIN, CLB and MTL. If you ask me, that is not good company to be in. Strangely, they have a perfect 16-0 record when leading after 2 periods so they just can’t hold on to early leads.

He’s never really “built” from the net out though. He’s only been successful at that “net” thing once, in Anaheim where he had Giguere.

I dunno. Is there a substantial difference between “building” and signing Gustavsson, Rynnas, Scrivens, and Owuya? Is the lack of turnover the problem, or are you suggesting that he should’ve paid for a more “proven” asset to count as “building”?

I think I was very clear that the Leafs make a move for a veteran goaltender this summer. What a surprise our goaltending sucks again.

Gustavsson is up to backup-level SVP, and Reimer is down because of a naturally volatile and impressively unlucky PK SVP. Unless there’s an argument that I should be expecting Gustavsson to tank in the second half of the season, I’m not sure which part could have been significantly improved by signing a non-starter veteran who didn’t also get surprisingly unlucky.
I mean, who of the UFA goaltenders from last summer would be an upgrade if you’re not looking to bury Reimer for two years? Vokoun wouldn’t have taken the same deal in Toronto that he was offered in Washington, Giguere is Giguere, Garon looks worse than Gustavsson…

Giguere putting up a .925 in 19 games played and would have signed if given an offer. I’d have signed and played him over Gustavsson in the off-season.

if you were saying we should have signed Giguere in the offseason, I want to see proof.
the truth is, he was our 2nd or 3rd best goalie last season, and showing no signs of improving. that is until he left the Leafs for an objectively worse team.

It’s funny, the result is awful and the Leafs have been shit for a while, but this is a pretty decent game by them. They outshot Ottawa big time and couldn’t score.

it’s the optics that suck. losing a ‘must win’ game against a division rival. the truth is, if they had played better over the last few weeks this game wouldn’t have been such a big deal.
also, Reimer should have been started about 2 weeks ago. I thought some practice time might help him, but at some point he’s going to rust. this wasn’t a great game to throw him in for.

Reimer has played 17 games (all starts).
only 8 of them were games .900 or above.
remember when we said this summer that as goes Reimer so goes our season…?
