A Leafs Hat
Welcome to a new feature we're trying out here. You've noticed the name of it, "Building the Narrative", by now. This feature is going to be a place for us to share fond memories of the Leafs or things tangentially related to the team, something we hope is either funny or poignant but not always either. Got something you'd like to fill this space with? You know how to reach us.
I wasn't very tall growing up. In 1994 I was in fourth grade just outside of Hartford, CT and was the shortest kid in my grade by six inches easy. My parents both worked at the time and so after school I went to daycare until they could pick me up.
Those of you who've frequented the site or even better played hockey with me will likely guess (correctly) that I got into more than my fair share of trouble as a kid. Being stuck somewhere with nothing to do was always a good time to get into mischief.
I don't remember the day anymore and I don't remember the kid who did it. He might have been tall or short, fat or skinny, I don't know. What I remember is that I was playing Blades of Steel on my original grey brick Game Boy wearing the only Toronto Maple Leafs memorabilia I owned: a ratty old Leafs baseball hat.
While amusing myself someone thought it would be funny if he stole my hat and as ten year olds do I chased him around until he put my hat in the volleyball net pole with the geared net tensioner and spun the crank, ripping the only hat I wore clean in half.
Every year when Christmas comes around I watch "A Christmas Story" at least once. I'm not religious but I like the glimpse of Americana that comes wrapped in obvious sepia toned nostalgia. There's a scene late in the movie where Ralphie grows tired of being bullied by Scut Farkas and snaps. He's much smaller than his tormentor but he goes Clarke MacArthur on Jaroslav Spacek, bloodying Scut's face while screaming obscenities.
I don't remember the fight per se, I remember that the other kid had a fat lip and a bloody nose, and I remember that I refused to apologize on the grounds that I didn't start it.
I had gotten the hat from my coach. He was a big Leafs fan and two years earlier while playing for him he first started calling me "The Cat", likely just before Potvin's emergence in the Leafs' net. I remember waiting to get my haircut and reading a Sports Illustrated story about Felix Potvin, a quiet goalie who lived across from an elementary school who thought none of his neighbors recognized him.
I don't remember watching the 1993 playoff run, I would have been nine years old and even if Center Ice existed my family wouldn't have paid for it then, but I remember getting a hat and a nickname. I made sure to watch for Felix Potvin whenever the Leafs played the Whalers and one time got his autograph as he was getting on the Leafs' bus. Thankfully it wasn't on the hat.

Just outside Hartford? Whereabouts?
I’m working at the Newington VA and living in Farmington. Aside from all the Bruins fans, it’s a decent area. I’ll be sure not to wear any Leafs hats near any elementary schools now that I know the bullies target them…
All over really. My grandfather was born in New Britain though, and lived in Newington for a while.

Wow. Very coincidental.
When I was probably around 9 or 10 a kid stole my Leafs hat (It was blue with a black brim, as opposed to grey) at recess and proceeded to run around with it and throw it in a muddy puddle. I freaked out (basically went Ralphie) and punched him right in the nose, which started bleeding, the kid turned red and started crying and ran inside. This was one of my successful attempts at vigilante justice as a kid, as opposed to the time I tried to fight someone a year older than me while playing Mini-sticks and ended up looking like Eric Cole vs. Ian White.

No kidding!
I had always blithely assumed that Leafs fans could only ever come from Canadian cities that didn’t have teams, people that had spent time in/around Toronto, or people whose families had rightly ensured they became Leafs fans and began the program early! I suppose Coaches can fall into that category of influence.
Are you saying you’re a goalie? Frequent reader but have never seen you state your position.

Nice to hear Felix played a part in your baptism, hahaha! Man, that was a fine few years alright… I was at game 5 vs. LA, and it was nuts! I just looked him up… he’s 41ish now, wow does it ever make me feel old!

nice
this place is great for all sorts of advanced statistical analysis, in-depth player features, and mockery of the MSM, but a little more narrative and storytelling around here will be good to switch things up.
you were the short kid growing up? it all makes sense now.
also, ‘a christmas story’, while a glimpse of Americana, was actually filmed in my hometown of St Catharines.

Heh. I was like 5’6" my sophomore year of high school. I was Jared short.

Yeah I was 6’3 in 10th grade, and then stopped growing. And no, I didn’t fail any grades, so I wasn’t that giant 19 year old in Grade 10 English.

Haha same. I was 5’11 in grade 8 and 6’2 by grade 10. Stopped growing in grade 11 at 6’3, was disappointed because in grade 8 my doctor had told me if I kept on the growing curve I’d top out at 6’4-6’6.

When I was 9 and my brother was 7 we went to the Sudbury Science Centre and they had this thing where you’d plug in a bunch of info (age, weight, height, parents heights, probably a few other things I can’t remember). I actually remember this because at the time I was upset because it predicted my brother would be taller than me (as the younger one he was always shorter). It predicted I would be 6’1" and he would be 6’3".
Now, with me being 23 and him being 21, he is 6’2" and a half and I am 6’1" and a half. Pretty spot on.

I wonder how common that is for people who cheer for an out-of-town team. For example, I started cheering for the Dolphins because I liked Dan Marino when I was a kid.

I started getting interested in the Leafs when I was still living in Southern Cal. It was 2004, and I wanted to choose a hockey team in case I got interested in hockey for the future. In that case, I chose the Maple Leafs because I loved the blue and white colour scheme. My love for hockey grew very slowly initially. It wouldn’t be until 2007, when a friend convinced me to watch the team play in the final game of the season against the Habs, that my love for the game would truly begin to rise. I was mostly a baseball (Jays) fan beforehand, but hockey overtook American football as my second favorite sport (the two are very close, now).

I was in grade 3 in 1993 and my memories surrounding the playoff run are fuzzy at best. What I do recall is the way it made me feel; it was probably one of the most exciting times in my life. We had massive basement viewing parties on what I recall was the smallest TV ever made. Anyway, I hope you always have an endless supply of hats – you never know when you’re going to run into a jerk.
1993 I didn’t care much about hockey. i think I may have been cheering for the Habs.

Good read
I can relate to the being bullied part—I wasn’t the shortest kid in my class but I still got picked on often enough. I had an autographed Gary Leeman hockey card that got torn-up by some dickhead Bruins fan in the 5th grade.
Really looking forward to reading more from “Building the Narrative”.

I wore a detroit red wings hat when I was young
I don’t know why. I didn’t even like them. Kinda weird. Only other team I liked growing up was Colorado because of Sakic and Forsberg.
I was born in 89 so I definitely don’t remember the 1993 run, although I’ve heard the stories, and the kerry fraser hate from my dad enough times that I feel like I do.
You must pass this Kerry Fraser hatred onto your own children, and they onto theirs. Lest we forget.

Being born in ’81 allowed me to watch those lean years from 87-90 when we had Damphousse, Leeman, Clark and guys like Mark Osborne and Allan Bester. Those were years where I believe we only made the playoffs once and routinely finished last in our division. I remember my Dad (a big Habs/Sabres fan… long story on that maybe in the future) accosting me for backing a losing team. That 1993 run was fun because we were both hoping for a Leafs/Habs final but Kerry Fraser fucked us over.

I have a FLYERS still today thats from like 1987 and its really old and ratty
The Back plastic strap that adjusts actually has Duct Tape on it (Only its dark Midnight Green like because its Army Tape)
Its all faded and it sits on the dash of my car and I occasionally wear it.
Its been to Germany, Newfoundland, Ireland, Kuwait, Canada, Iraq, Barbados – British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, & Mexico.
I refuse to throw it out.

I too became a fan of the Leafs in the early 90's...
…and when I joined the Leafs’ fan club in perhaps 95 or 96 I got a signed card, a letter from the “Leafs”, a sticker, and a button. The letter, sticker, and button no longer exist, but I’ve always held onto the card. It’s battered and wrinkled from taking to school to show my friends, and holding tightly every Saturday night watching the Leafs play as a kid, but at least it’s still in one piece!
