Time to put the final nail in the coffin

Montreal comes to town tonight on the second leg of a back-to-back. A crushing 5-4 SO loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins has dealt their dwindling playoff hopes a serious blow. Another loss tonight to Canada's team would put the Habs 10 points back of 8th place Let's do this.

Absolutely Philly should make that trade. With Couturier sticking with the team this year, Vorachek kind of became expendable and then with Pronger going down, they need a defenseman.

What are the odds that this year is the season the Devils choose to forfeit their 1st round pick? With Brodeur pretty much finished, no one else in the system to replace him, and who knows what hapenning with Parise, it could be difficult for the team to get much better in the next couple of years. So this is likely the year they forfeit the pick, right?

From the trade bait link
He is young, developing and is already a top-six defenceman on most, if not all teams.

Is there a team Gunnar is not a top six guy on? I’d go as far as saying he was a top-four guy on more than a few teams.

Gunnar is a top 4 on all but the deepest defences in the league. Hugely under-rated guy, also comes with a very appealing cap hit.

Exactly. If we’re getting a top-two guy back and not giving up a massive amount in return, wonderful. If we’re getting a top-four guy back, he’d best do something Gunnar doesn’t to justify it. If we’re not getting a top-four guy back, he shouldn’t be leaving.

by BlindSight on Jan 21, 2012 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

It appears the Montreal Canadiens will be sellers at the trade deadline. GM Pierre Gauthier says if the Habs have the opportunity to make a good deal, he will do it. The question is who will go. RDS.ca suggests Scott Gomez and Hal Gill won’t be around next year, while Travis Moen, Andrei Kostitsyn, and Mathieu Darche are all question marks.

- From TSN

Where exactly is Gomez going to go? Unless they think he’s going to be bought out, there’s really no where to go unless Molson wants to bury a good possession player because he’s had some bad luck and is overpaid.

For reference, Gomez’s cap hit if he’s bought out this summer would be roughly $3.5 mil next season, $4.5 mil the following season, and then $1.666 mil the following two seasons.

Follow me on twitter @CoolJ90

by CoolJ90 on Jan 21, 2012 12:35 PM EST reply actions

The only places I could see Gomez going are cap floor teams, since his cap hit is $7.3m but his actual salary the next two years is $5.5 and $4.5. Even then though, that’s $10m for a guy who literally produces nothing. Most teams will probably be looking for at least a little bit of production out of their overpaid bums.

by lucc on Jan 21, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Even cap floor teams don’t want to pay a guy $4.5 million a year to score no goals. Why would you, when you could sign a guy like Fleischmann as a UFA for the same amount and get much better production?

We talk about the good moves Burke has pulled since he showed up in Toronto, but the Gomez for Higgins and McDonough deal has got to be one of the most lopsided since the salary cap came into effect, doesn’t it?

by Draglikepull on Jan 21, 2012 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, I think the only way Gomez moves is near the end of the summer when desperate cap floor teams are picking off the scrap heap. And even then it’s a long shot. Columbus just signed Brett Lebda to play hockey for them, would you be shocked to see them trade peanuts for Gomez and spin it as a “reclamation project”? I wouldn’t.

by lucc on Jan 21, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

Rolston from nj with 1 year left went to the islanders for useless trent hunter with 2 years left at a lower cap hit. One or two bad contracts have to go back to the habs or a bribe and I can’t see it happening because gomez is not even producing at AHL 3rd line level.

I would do komi + lombardi for gomez + prospect/pick and then promptly finger gomez.
And use the free capspace to resign liles and maybe grabbo.
